My Werewolf's Mate
Prologue
Once upon a time lived a curious and adventurous young boy who enjoyed the thrill of exploring.
He was eager and very smart, and always could be seen running around with his small white dog.
One day, he overheard a rumour about an evil witch who resided in the abandoned castle on top of the hill.
Getting bored and reckless, he took it upon himself to become his village's hero and went to find the witch.
Entering inside of the castle alongside his dog with a chipped wooden sword, he scowered the castle until finding her in a room, concocting potions.
He announced loud and clear his name and what he was here to do. The witch cackled and sent him away before he got hurt.
In an attempt to make her take him seriously, he stole a gemstone from an alter and started to run off with it.
The gemstone, which had been the core of the witch's immortality, had now been stolen.
She chased after him and finally retrieved the stone. She then set off to chant a curse.
Witch
For a beggar, I offer gold. For a rich man, I offer long life. For a thief, I offer you this.
Witch
I curse you to become the thieving dog that you are every night under the moon. You will not belong with animals or with humans. You will forever be alone. A monster.
Witch
I confine you to this castle, just like I once was.
Witch
This way, you shall forever regret your foolish actions of coming here and stealing my power.
The boy was surrounded with a deep cerulean light and was never seen after that day.
And after that, the castle became the scariest place. Howls could be heard late at night and sometimes, a child who stayed up after their bedtime could see a light move around the castle and the silhouette of a monster flickering amongst the embers.
The legend of the monster inhabiting the castle soon spread around the village and parents urged their children never to play in the woods in case the monster was out hunting.
It became a bedtime story so that the children would be wary of the unknown and to discourage curiosity. However, there was one girl who ignored the warnings against curiousity and embraced it.
This is her story... and the story of a monster who isn't who he is said to be.
This is a story of love, loss and pain. But most of all, this story is one that will be past down from generation to generation and will change the village's way of thinking forever.

Chapter 1 - Treasured
Mrs Poppy
Isabella! Isabella!
The piercing sound of an older woman's voice filled my ears, immediately making me pause my laundry.
Isabella Ashton
Yes, Mrs Poppy?
Mrs Poppy
Less cheek from you and hurry up! The bakery is going to open soon!
Isabella Ashton
Understood.
I turned back and started to scrub her gown faster than before.
I dropped everything and ran towards the house, exhausted.
Despite having to do most things in this household, I am grateful to Mr and Mrs Poppy.
My parents were travelling merchants. They travelled around the country selling their wares.
When my mother had me, we settled down in this small village by the sea and from there, all was well. That was... until everything went downhill.
My mother died from an illness and my father died on a boat in the middle of the ocean, never to return.
In the end, the Poppy's greeted me into their home and gave me food and drink and shelter.
The Ashton merchant trading company was sold and I retained the money in the bank which was located in the capital.
I've never needed it, apart from giving some money to the Poppy's every year as a thank you for taking care of me.
Apart from that, I'm pretty much their maid.
I clean their clothes, wash their windows, clean their house, wake up early in the morning to knead the dough of the bread and to open up shop.
But I'm grateful for being so fortunate. I don't feel unlucky or underprivileged.
I ran towards the shop and immediately unlocked the doors and laid out the freshly cooked bread behind the window.
I tied up my bouncy blond locks into a ponytail and tied my apron around my olive branch waist.
Isabella Ashton
Time to get to work!
Soon, customers came piling in and I gave them everything they needed.
I then noticed that everyone was wearing fancy clothes, especially the young ladies.
Isabella Ashton
What is going on?
A young woman who has always been friendly to me answered my question.
Young Lady
It's an eventful day! A rich noble of marriageable age is coming by our village today. All of the girls wish to impress him.
Isabella Ashton
Is that so... well, good luck!
Young Lady
Thank you, Isabella. You know, I never asked but why do you seem so against getting married?
Young Lady
You've been proposed to by half of the men in this village! Getting a catch like a noble would be no hard feat for you.
Isabella Ashton
But I can't get married. If I do, who would look after Mr and Mrs Poppy?
She placed her hand onto her bulging chest and smiled.
Young Lady
You really are as sweet as a sugarplum!
Young Lady
Good luck with your day, sweetie.
And just like that, the shop was yet again empty. I smiled when I noticed one loaf that hadn't been bought. Everyone in the village had purchased one so... I'm sure that it'll be fine if I feed it to my little friends outside.
I walked out from the back door and immediately got welcomed by the only friends I have in this world. The stray cats.
Isabella Ashton
Hello, little ones.
Isabella Ashton
Here, I brought you all some bread and sausages.
The little moments that I spend here are the highlights of my day.
If only life could be as simple as this...

Chapter 2 - Charmed
I spent a long time with the cats, allowing them to climb all over me. Then, a white cat slowly approached me, miaowing to me immediately.
Isabella Ashton
Snow! There you are!
Snow is the most handsome cat that I've ever laid eyes on. His fur is as white as snow, thus the name Snow.
I got up and walked towards him, scratching under his chin.
I handed him a bit of sausage, which he accepted with delight.
Isabella Ashton
There you are. You must be hungry! It's been a week since you came to see me last.
The cat jumped onto my lap and rubbed his face against my stomach affectionately.
Isabella Ashton
Come on, you can't make the other cats jealous.
It miaowed unsatisfied, jumping down from my arms as I got up and brushed myself off.
Mrs Poppy
Here she is! Isabella!Isabella.
I turned around and found Mrs Poppy walk towards me, following by a man wearing bright clothes with a royal blue coat.
Mrs Poppy
There she is! She will be perfect for you, I promise, My Lord.
He eyed me up and down, then smiled.
Nicolas Thomas
Indeed... she will make a nice bride.
Hold on, what's going on?
Snow started to hiss, circling around my legs protectively.
Mrs Poppy
Feral cats? Didn't I tell you to stop feeding them our bread? Shoo, get away!
She took a broom and started to try and hit the poor cats with it.
Isabella Ashton
No! Don't hit them!
The broom handle then struck my arm and I immediately winced.
Mrs Poppy
You silly girl! I can't believe you! Those cats are parasites.
I then noticed that Snow hadn't left yet.
Isabella Ashton
Go on, Snow. It's okay...
The cat looked at me one last time before turning around and leaving.
Nicolas Thomas
You seem to be caring. Not to mention you look quite exquisite...
He went to touch my chin when Mrs Poppy walked forward.
Mrs Poppy
About that payment you mentioned...
Nicolas Thomas
Don't worry... for a woman of this caliber, I'll give you enough to be comfortable until your retirement.
Isabella Ashton
Mrs Poppy, you're selling me?
Mrs Poppy
I am not, dearest. You are becoming of age, you should marry.
Isabella Ashton
But I don't want to get married...
Mrs Poppy
Well, darling, you don't have a choice. I'll see you out, Lord Thomas.
Nicolas Thomas
I'll be looking forward to our wedding in a weeks time, my dear Isabella...
I shivered and for the first time in a while, I felt fear.
I don't want to become this man's bride. I don't want to get married to a man that I've just met...
And his eyes... I don't feel safe when I look into them. I can't help but shiver...
I've got to get out of this... somehow.
