The young eight year old princess Folcön wakes up. She suddenly feels weak and it's hard to breath. She turns her head to look out of the window of her room and sees her curtains are yet to be drawn. Suddenly the door opens revealing the princess's handmaiden. "Mary." Folcön's voice is weak. Mary runs to the princess's bed. She puts her hand on the princess's forehead. "Oh dear, princess you're burning up. I'm going to get the doctor." Mary runs out in a panic. Folcön feels her eyes get heavy again.
Folcön wakes up to voices. "Your Majesties the young princess has a very high fever. She most likely stayed out to long practicing her sword skills that she got sick with a fever." Folcön recognizes the doctor's voice. "How long until she is recoverers?" Folcön tries to open her eyes at her father's concern voice. Once she got them open she turns towards the voices. "Daddy," Folcön slowly reaches out. The King turns at the sound of his daughter's voice. He kneels on the floor and grabs her hand. "I'm here my baby girl." Folcön gives a weak smile at her dad. Folcön tries to get her blankets off her since she feels so hot. "No, princess don't take your blankets off." The doctor says grabbing the blankets and putting them back on her. "You may feel very hot because your body is trying to burn a very bad bug in you. You need the blankets to protect you from any more bad bugs." Folcön goes wide eyed as the doctor explains what's happening. "I have a bug in me. Eww!" Folcön give a discussed face.
Everyone smiles. "Here take this special potion to help kill that nasty bug." The doctor say as he puts a reddish liquid into a spoon. He then brings it to her. Her dad helps her sit up. She then opens her mouth and the doctor puts the spoon in. Folcön closing her mouth and shollows. "Gross, that potion taste awful." Folcön frowns as the nasty bitter taste of the medicine sets on her tongue. "Yes it helps kill that bug, so make sure you take it once a day." The doctor hands the medicine to one of the maids. "Now princess, rest, eat, and take the potion and you will be better in no time." Folcön nods at the doctor's words.
'So bored' she thinks to herself. She has been sick for three days, today is sword lessons. All she wants to do is practice but her maids refuse to let her out of her room as ordered from her father. She is now able to move on her own. Folcön turns towards the door at the sound of knocking. "Come in." She calls out weakly to whoever it was. Soon the door opens revealing a maid with her morning meal. "I'm glad to see you awake, milady." The maid smiles and brings over the food.
Folcön smiles at her maid. Her breakfast is eggs, two slices of bread, and chicken soup. Folcön sits up to eat her meal, as soon as she about to eat her soup her door burst open. In comes her twin brother Nedla. "How on fireballs are you still sick? Did you know how long I waited for you to come down so we can practice." Nedla says as he points at his sister with his wooden sword. "Only to be told that you're still sick!" Folcön smiles at him, "oh don't tell me you miss me beating you at swordplay." The maid shakes her head at her highness's words. However, Nedla smiles back. "Whoever said that you beat me."
The maid sighs, 'not again the young highnesses always fight when it comes to who's better with a sword.' The maid shakes her head dismissing her thoughts. "MARY!" Both twins yell out the maid's name. "Ye...yes, your highnesses?" Mary looks at the two they look so much alike with their dark blonde hair and grey blue eyes. The only difference is has short hair and another wears a dress most of the time. "Who's better at swordplay?!" They both yell out the question. Mary sighs, "oh dear. I must apologize for I do not watch you practice. That's a question better left to your sword instructor." Both twin glare at each other only to burst out laughing.
Mary sighs, these two are a complete mystery. "Her highness should be well enough to practice swordplay tomorrow. For right now let her eat and rest." Mary says as twins stop laughing. "Okay, rest well." Nedla runs out of the room again. "Now my lady. Eat your breakfast and take your medicine then rest. Tomorrow you should be well enough to practice once more. Just don't over do it." Mary put both hands on her hips. Mary smiles at her highness as her thoughts consumes her. 'These children only think about is swordplay. It doesn't help that their father encourages them.'
Folcön finishes her breakfast and takes her medicine. She lays down as Mary takes her plates away. 'I can't wait for tomorrow when I'm not sick,' she smiles to herself and falls asleep. She wakes up to a warm hand petting her hair. She opens her yes and sees her mom sitting on her bed. "Mommy," the Queen picks up her daughter into a hug. "How are you feeling?" Folcön smiles up at her mom. "Well enough to beat Nedla in swordplay again." The Queen shakes her head at her daughter's words. 'Why does Rodman encourages this behavior so much. I get that he want strong children but they are still children.' The Queen smiles at her thoughts of course she see it he's way.
"Sleep well my dear. Swordplay can wait." Folcön nods and closes her eyes again. "Maylen is she asleep?" The Queen turns at the softened voice of her husband. "Yes, did you get all your paperwork done." Rodman sighs at the thought of paperwork. "One of the only thing I don't like about being king. How is she?" Rodman asks as he walks up to his wife. He smiles at his little Folcön. "The doctor says that she well be back to fighting tomorrow. I swear that's the only thing that goes through their minds." Maylen smiles as runs her hand through her daughter's hair. "At least we know that they will be able to protect themselves." Rodman kisses Folcön forehead and turns to his wife. "Come let her sleep." Rodman grabs her hand and guides her out.
"Time to wake up." Folcön wakes to Mary's voice and the sudden light in her room. "My lady you're going to be late for training if you sleep any longer." This gets Folcön's attention as she jumps out of bed to get ready for the day. After Mary help get her into her training gear and put her hair up, she runs out with a wooden sword in hand. She soon arrives at the training grounds. "Folcön you're late." Nedla calls out. "Am not," Folcön glares at her twin only for both to laugh. "Okay your highnesses it's time to start." Their sword instructor says they practice new and old moves against each other as their instructors point out the weaknesses.
After sword training it was dance practice. So Folcön runs to the small hole in the wall of the castle gates that leads into the forest. Folcön smiles as she listens to the birds singing and the sun peeking through the leaves. Folcön walks around looking at all the different places and animals that live here. Suddenly a big brown ball of fur walks in front of her. 'A baby bear' Folcön thought as she quickly looks for the mother which shouldn't be far. Folcön slowly backs up away from the bear. 'I haven't gotten my spirit animal yet and I don't have my sword.' Folcön thought as she backs up. "Stop don't move." Folcön freezes at the sound of a new voice. Suddenly a boy jumps out of the tree near where the cub was. The boy picks up the cub and walks back to the tree. Folcön stays as still as she can not knowing if she may move now.
"You don't have to stay still now." Folcön turns towards the tree as the boy appears. Folcön gets a better look at him. He had blonde hair and dark green eyes. He is also in thick leather armor. "Hello, my name is Princess Folcön Silver Smith." Folcön curtsy with imagery dress. The boy tilts his head confused. "Name's Troy." Troy turns at the sound of granting. "I got to go." With that the boy was gone. Folcön hears a trumpet sound. 'Oh no I need to get home.' Folcön turns and runs back to the hole in the wall. Once she reaches the wall and turns back to the forest.
Suddenly light hits Folcön's eyes waking her up. Folcön turns away from the light. "Milady, it's time to wake up for your final preparation for your summoning trial tomorrow." Mary scolds the nine year old Folcön as she ties up the curtains. Folcön open her eyes and sits up. "Mary, get my riding clothes ready." Folcön says as she gets out of bed. "Yes milady. You're bath has been drawn for you." Mary says as she curtsy and goes to get the clothes ready. After the bath and getting dressed Folcön goes to the dining room. She sits across from Nedla at the table.
"Are you two ready for the summoning trial tomorrow?" The twins turn towards their mom at her question. Folcön smiles at her mom. "Yes, I can't wait to get my phoenix." Folcön says as the maids come in with their breakfast. After Folcön finish eating she heads to the hole in the wall.
Folcön runs though the forest to a meadow. "You're late Princess." Folcön roll her eyes. "We never set a time bird brain." She looks around to try to find him. Troy jumps out of a near by tree. "Not even close to where I was." Troy smiles and walks over to Folcön. "I was going to look there next. You just jumped out before I could." Folcön huffs as she sits down. "How what brings the princess down and into my nick of the woods? Don't tell me you're running away from dance lessons again." Troy asks as he sits down next to her.
"I'm not I just wanted to tell you that I'm going to do the summoning trial tomorrow." Folcön says glaring at Troy. "Oh right, can you explain what that is again?" Troy asks rubbing his neck nervously. "The summoning trial consist of five trails. One is the test of courage. Me and my twin brother Nedla must cross a very narrow bridge surrounded by lava." Troy's eyes widen, "wait what?! Do you have to always do that for summoning spirits?" Folcön glares at Troy for interpreting her. "Well every element and spirit has different requirements. I'm a fire element so I'm going to the sacred volcano where the mother of phoenixes lay. I'm going to get a phoenix."
"Oh okay so what are the other elements and spirits? But first finish explaining your summoning trials." Troy smiles eager to learn more. "Hmm okay. The second trial is the test of strength. Nedla and I will come to a dead end with letters on the wall we most figure out how to break it. Third is knowledge. We most use all of our knowledge to get through the tunnel. Fourth is skill. We have to fight with two lava golems and one fire spirit. Lastly there five the test of heart. This one is the hardest for it is always different for each person." Folcön smiles at Troy as nods in understanding.
"Those sound hard but at least you're not alone." Troy says as he pulls out a bag of berries. "Want one?" He hold it out to her. Folcön grabs a hand full. "Now for the other elements there are a lot but the basic one are Fire, Earth, Water, and Air. As for the spirits there are way too many to say. I do know a few. The kingdom of Blazkin which we're in now. The royal family is known to have Phoenixes. However my mom's kingdom of Gaterda is known for fire foxes. There is also the neighboring kingdom of Airtasia is known for dragons. Those are a few of them but there are so much more." Folcön smiles as she starts to eat the berries. "Wow, so are the royals the only people who can summon spirits?" Troy starts to rub his neck again.
"I'm not sure, I remember reading in a history book that there was a time where everyone had a spirit." Folcön smiles sheepishly since she never really paid attention to history that was one of the few things she remembers. "Is that so. So what happens after you get your spirit?" Troy asks as he puts the now empty bag between his left leg and the leather armor he made. "After the summoning trial there's going to be a ball for mine and Nedla's birthday." Folcön frowns at the thought of having to dance.
"What's wrong?" Troy asks looking at Folcön worriedly. "Oh it's nothing I would just have to dance." Folcön says as she shrugs her shoulders. "Oh no, you actually have to act like a girl." Troy teases, Folcön rolls her eyes. "Oh, would you like to come T?" Troy tilts his head confused. "What do you mean?" Folcön thinks of a way to explain it. "I mean would you like to come to the ball?" Troy's shakes his hand no. Folcön frowns she really wants him to go. Then an idea comes to mind. 'Food, metal armor.' "I guess I won't need to tell you about the kind of food that will be there. Or this really cool armor that is made of metal." Folcön says as she gets up and starts walking. "Wait, I want to come." Troy says jumping up after her.
Folcön turns and smiles at Troy. She then look him up and down. "You're just a little bit taller then my brother so you can wear his clothes. Meet me at the hole in the wall in the morning." Folcön says as the trumpets sound. "Okay." After he's reply Folcön turns and runs off. Folcön gets to the hole and crawls through then runs the rest of the way to the castle. Stopping a couple of times to catch her breath. She soon makes it to the castle the guards opens the front doors seeing her. She runs through and soon runs right into Nedla. "Ow, what in the fireballs?!" Nedla looks behind him to see what had made him fall. "Oh it's you Cön." Folcön smiles sheepishly, "Ned could I use one of your outfits for a friend of mine for the ball?" Nedla at his sister and shakes his head. "Fine, but would you get off my back Cön." Folcön quickly stands up. "Oh sorry Ned."
"Oh no problem." Nedla look out the window and sees the sun going down. "We should head to dinner. Where were you anyways? You missed lunch." Nedla asks as they head to dinner. "Just hanging out with a friend." Nedla looks over his shoulder. "Would this said friend be the one you need my clothes for?" Folcön nods. "Okay I'll have one of the maids take it to you before I go to bed. After dinner Folcön heads to her room to get ready for bed. Soon she hears a knock on the door. "Come in." The door opens revealing one of the maids. "Milord asked me to bring you theses." The maid says holding out a pile of clothes. "Thanks set them on that chair." Folcön says pointing to the chair near the maid. The maid nods and sets the pile of clothes down. Folcön crawls into bed and falls asleep thinking of her trials.
"Princess it's time to get up." Folcön open her eyes and slowly sits up. See then sees the pile of clothes on the chair. 'I need to hurry.' Folcön thought as she runs to get into the bath. She returns and her maids get her into her summoning robes. "Tell my parents I'll be late for breakfast." Folcön grabs the clothes and run out of the castle. After a few stops Folcön makes to the hole. "T are you there?" Folcön calls out. "Yeah, your late again." Folcön rolls her eyes she was not. "Crawl through the hole." Folcön says and backs away from the hole. Soon Troy's blonde hair appears then the rest of him. "That was a tight fit." Troy says as he dusts off the dirt.
"Here put these on." Folcön hand him the clothes. "If you can't figure out how go to a maid named Mary she will help you. Just tell your name. I got to go see you at the ball." Folcön turns and runs off. She finally makes it to the dinning hall. She catches her breath then walks in. "Sorry for being late." Folcön says as she gives a polite curtsy. "No problem dear. Come let us eat." Her father says with a smile. Folcön sits down and starts to eat. "Hey Cön, who do you think is going to kill a lava golem first?" Folcön smiles up at her brother. "Me obviously, you're great with strategies but I'm better with the sword." Nedla frowns then smiles, "yeah you're right I am better at strategies then the sword."
"I swear I have two sons instead of a daughter." The Queen says with a smile. Everyone starts to laugh. Suddenly the door opens and one of the a guard walks over to the king. "What?!" The king shouts out. Unphased the guard continues to give he's report. "Fine, I'll deal with it tomorrow but right now it's my children's birthday so don't bring this up until tomorrow." The guard nods and leaves. "What's wrong?" The Queen asks. "Don't worry it's just a problem in the flooding docks but it can be solved tomorrow." The Queen nods and everyone finishing eating. "Okay it is now time for you two to begin your trails.
The carriage slows to a stop. The royal family exists and the two twins in the summoning robes walk to the bridge. The Queen hugs both of her children. "See you at the ball. Be careful, trust each other and don't lose heart." The twins hug their mom and smile at each other. "We will." They say together. The king now kneels in front of his twins. "Now, Nedla, Folcön. This is not the time to challenge each other but to work together. Normally this is done alone but you have each other." The king rafles his kids' hair. "Dad!" Both yell with a smile on their face. The twins turn and head to the volcano.
They soon reach the entice to the cave of the scared volcano. "You ready, Ned?" Folcön asks looking at her twin. He smiles at her and grabs her hand. "Together with you Cön, we can overcome anything that comes into our paths." Folcön smiles back at her brother. They take a deep breath and step into the cave together. The instance that that entered the cave all the torches lights up with flaming red fire. "Come little ones. Come pass your trials and earn your phoenixes. I await you at the center of the volcano." A strong yet kind voice echos throughout the volcano. "Was that the mother of fire just now?" Folcön looks at her twin each seems to be as shocked she was. "I believe so." Nedla answers once he got a hold of himself.
They smile at each other and start walking farther into the cave. They walk in silence in the cold cave with the light of the torches. "If we're in a volcano how in the cave so cold?" Folcön asks confused. "Well, maybe because we're very far from any lava." Nedla answers with a shrug of his shoulders. After a long time they are suddenly hit with a heat wave. The twins are breathless with the sudden temperature change. "I think we're getting close to the first trial." Nedla says once he gets his breathing under control.
The twins freeze as the torches suddenly end. They stare into the pure black cave. "Why did the torches suddenly stop?" Folcön asks confused and slightly scared. "I think this is the start of the first trial. The test of courage." Nedla says and looks at his sister. He smiles and slightly tightens his grip on her hand. "Let's go." Folcön nods and follows Nedla into the lightless cave. As they walked the heat raise and becomes almost unbearable. The twins could not see each other but they have yet let go of each other's hands. After a long walk through the darkness they see light and the end of the tunnel. They start to run to get to the light. They exit the tunnel into a very large room. The twins stood on a small ledge with a very straight and narrow stone bridge connecting to the other ledge on the other side of the room. "We made it to the lava bridge." Nedla says looking around. The twins look at the lava bubbling and the small rocks the fall occasionally into the lava.
"No wonder it's the test of courage." Folcön says with wide eyes. Nedla nods, "I'll go first." Nedla says as he let's go of her hand. Nedla starts walking to the bridge. Folcön panics as she saw a couple of rocks hit Nedla as he walked on the bridge. Soon Nedla makes it safely across. "Cön, come on it's your turn now!" Nedla shouts out from the other side. Folcön takes a deep breath and walks to the bridge. She walks keeping her eyes on her feet. She does the same thing as Nedla. With her arms out and walking heel to toe. Suddenly something hits her left shoulder hard. Folcön looses balance. "Cön!" Nedla shouts as he sees her lose her balance. Folcön regains balance and continues to walk. She doesn't look already knowing it was a rock. After get hit three more times on the head, right hand, and left forearm. She makes in to her brother's side.
"Okay, that was very scary." Folcön says looking back at the bridge. "Do we have to cross it again?" Folcön looks back as her brother knowing that he payed attention in class. "No we don't. Come on let's continue." They start walking into the new tunnel. Slowly the temperature lessen to a comfortable temperature. "Strange at first it was super cold, then unbearably hot, now it's hot but comfortable." Folcön comments. "Well at first it was just earth the cave was large so the torches only gave light and not heat. Then we got near the lava pit. Now we are deep within the volcano so the earth around us is warm since there is a lot of lava around us but the earth is putting a natural barrier between us and the lava." Nedla says as they now enter another large room but this one is a lot small then the last. In the center of the room is a pedestal on the far wall is a door. The twins walk up the the pedestal. "This is the test of strength."
"Many enter in this world of fire. To continue this journey. One must test their own flames. What does that mean?" Folcön asks after she reads the pedestal. "Hey, Cön come look at this door." Folcön runs over to Nedla. Her eyes widen in shock. The door had no handles or knobs. "How do we open the door?" Nedla continues to examine the door. "Well this is the test of strength and the pedestal said to continue we need to test our fire. I think this door is somehow opened with our fire."
"Maybe those silver tubes have something to do with the door." Folcön says pointing to one of the two silver tubes. Nedla smiles, "that's it! We use our fire power to open the door by putting it through the tubes. Folcön you focus on the tube on your right and I'll focus on this one. We most likely have to do it at the same time. So on the count of three." The twins move into position. "One...Two...Three!" Nedla counts and on three both of them shoot fire out of their hands and into the tubes. They soon run out of fire power. The move away from the door and see nothing happened. "Nothing happ..." Folcön says but a loud bang sounds and the door slowly opens. "Never mind."
