The Assassin Of My Heart
Chapter 1 - Locked Away
All I've known in life is isolation. I've never had friends or companions. It's just been me and my books.
What I'd do to escape this hell... I just want to breathe the fresh air of a rice field, feel the long grass flutter between my fingertips and just feel at peace.
The sound of my captor, my grandfather, filled my ears as I gave out a huge sigh.
Wang Yan
Less cheek! My clothes need washing immediately.
Despite my reputation of being the most beautiful woman in the city, I am reduced to a mere maid in front of my grandfather.
Aluna Yan
Yes, right away.
I got up from sitting on my porch and ran to the back door. Hoping to say hello to my grandfather, all that I found was a basket of dirty clothes. He had left...
He is the only person that I get to talk with and he doesn't even want to give me a conversation?
I'd do anything to escape this prison...
And just like that, I got my wish.
I was in the process of scrubbing my grandfather's clothes when I heard a scream from the direction of the marketplace.
It was quite loud and a few more ensued. It was like they were getting massacred!
I jumped as I saw my grandfather rushing towards me.
Wang Yan
Come! Get into the carriage, quickly!
Wang Yan
No time to explain! Get in!
Aluna Yan
Wait, I've got to get Father's sword-
Wang Yan
Stop being so difficult!
Wang Yan
You've been nothing but spoilt ever since I took you under my wing!
Wang Yan
Talking back to me, snapping at me... it's revolting!
W-Wait, what? That's how he sees me in his mind?
Wang Yan
Now, come on! I've had enough of your wailing!
As he grabbed my wrist, I then quickly pulled away from him.
Wang Yan
Aluna, what are you-
Aluna Yan
I've had enough... enough of being your maid when I'm supposed to be your granddaughter... enough of being reduced to an afterthought.
Aluna Yan
I'd rather die than live in captivity for any longer-
Then, a shadow appeared from behind me, jumping right over me as a man with hair as white as the moon held a sword to my grandfather's throat.
Wang Yan
N-No, please don’t kill me... you want money?
The assassin didn't even bat an eyelid at it.
Wang Yan
Jewels? Ancient scriptures? Or... her! I'll give you my granddaughter! There she is, right there!
Wait... what? He wants to exchange me for his life?
What do I have to say in it? Women are the property of the head of the household. Everything that I own belongs to him, even my very life.
If only I was strong like him... if only I could use my skills to get recognised as a person...
I clenched my fists, my head lowering to the floor.
Aluna Yan
I don't want to be anyone's property anymore... I want to be my own person and do what I want! I want to become stronger!

Chapter 2 - The Accord
Li Wei
You want to become stronger...
The assassin spoke, his voice as frigid as the winter cold.
It pierced through my chest like an icicle, hitting my every nerve.
Aluna Yan
Can you teach me? How to be stronger?
What am I doing? I'm so desperate that I asked an assassin to teach me how to become stronger.
Aluna Yan
I don't want to be bullied anymore. I want to have strength, enough strength to make those horrid men listen to me.
I then looked up at him, my eyes as determined as his once were.
Wang Yan
She's extremely beautiful and can cook! She also has a perfect figure to give birth!
Wang Yan
Take her as your wife and let me go!
Aluna Yan
I don't want to belong to him anymore. I don't want to be a caged bird anymore!
The breath got taken out of my lungs as he lifted the sword from my grandfather's temple.
Wang Yan
G-Good, I'm glad that you accept a great offer when you see one.
Li Wei
I will train you to become just like me. That is what you want, isn't it?
Li Wei
But, the road ahead isn't clean. Your hands will be stained with blood. Your morals won't exist anymore. You will become an assassin...
The silver mask covering half of his face glimmered in the sunlight as he slowly approached me.
He then handed me a small dagger, a weapon sharp enough to take a life.
Li Wei
The first rule of an assassin... no familial attachments.
Wang Yan
W-Wait, that wasn't part of our deal-
He glared angrily at my grandfather who attempted to get up.
He looked at me, watching as my trembling fist clenched around the handle of the blade.
All of the anger, frustration and anguish concentrated in my hand as I ran towards him. I knew just the spot to hit. Right in the artery, where it would deal most damage.
My grandfather didn't have time to dodge. The blade embedded itself into his chest, making him cry out in pain until he fell to the ground, lifeless.
My father's words came back to me. Always wash your blade after a kill.
I took the blade out and wiped it on the grass before handing it back to the assassin.
My expression was unwavering and even if I felt shook, I didn't let it show.
He snatched the blade back and put it away.
I took a glance back at my house and ran towards it. He froze in place and soon saw me emerge with a wrapped up sword on my back.
He stared at me, almost frustrated, and turned around again, walking away.
I chased after him and walked behind him. At our feet were the dead bodies of women, children and men.
The sandy gravel on the ground was stained crimson with their blood. I couldn't help but be shaken but kept a straight face.
I won't allow myself to be bullied anymore. I'm going to explore the world, grow stronger so that everyone will fear the name Aluna Yan!

Chapter 3 - The Cave
It took us a few hours by horse to reach a cave. The whole trip, I had been dead silent.
The man behind me was an assassin who had taken me under his wing. He promised to help me become stronger... to become someone who is able to protect herself.
He stopped at the entrance to the cave and jumped off of the horse, leaving me stranded on it with no way off.
I guess that it all starts with me...
I slid my leg awkwardly over to the other side and was about to lose balance as I jumped down.
I could hear the man snort as I blushed, terribly embarrassed.
I've never even mounted a horse before! How does he expect me to know how to unmount one?
I walked into the cave and immediately, I could smell something that had gone rotten.
I saw two legs of what looked like deer meat with maggots crawling out of them.
Li Wei
That old man told me that you can cook.
Aluna Yan
Um, I hope that you don't mean with that.
Aluna Yan
That meat will make you sick, and could possibly kill you! That's inedible!
He looked at me, slightly annoyed. Was he going to kill me?
He grabbed the whole deer legs by the bone and walked towards me.
Was he going to slap me to death with that meat?
I shut my eyes tightly when he walked right past, without even touching me.
As he walked out, he threw the two legs into the bush and started to walk deeper into the forest.
Was I supposed to stay here?
I tied up the horse to the tree and suddenly spotted some herbs underneath a log.
Aluna Yan
These are really high quality! There are some that are great for salves and some that are nice for seasoning! Best if I pick them all!
I took a reed rod from the pond right next to the cave and slowly tied the useful herbs together.
My mother used to be an herbalist, so I have thousands of herb books in my room. I've, naturally, read and learnt all of them.
Aluna Yan
That one is toxic, and can be useful for poisons.
Li Wei
What are you doing on the floor?
I jumped straight up to find the assassin in front of me with a dead boar in his hands.
Aluna Yan
Eek! You killed it!
Li Wei
That is what shocks you? Not human death?
Aluna Yan
T-That surprised me is all. I just found some seasoning herbs that I could use. They'd actually be great on the boar meat!
He then handed me a knife.
Li Wei
Butcher it and cook it. I'll start a fire. If it isn't good, I'll kill you.
Aluna Yan
I-I... understood!
And I set to work with the knife, closing my eyes as I made the first cut into the dead animal.
Has he really gone hunting for this just for me?
I turned and looked at him, sitting in the moonlight, sharpening his sword with a stone.
He might appear to be mean... but he might be quite nice.
