When I was nine years old, something happened that changed my life forever. But before that, let me tell you about my family.
Michael
My parents divorced when I was five and my father left us right after that. My family was no longer the same again. My two younger sisters were too young to understand what was happening and I could not explain it to them either.

My mother said my father had gotten another woman, that is why he left us. But that did not sit well with me. Father loved us. I know because he always took us to the park during the weekends and played with us most of the times. He always showed us his soft side, unlike our mother, who was always strict with us.

I always do remember how mother and father fought almost all the time because of something I never knew about. My siblings were young then so they would not remember most of what happened like I did.
Michael
Even though my mother told me, father left us because he no longer loved us, I could not hate him.
Michael
I really wanted to hate him, yet I couldn't.
Michael
I only hoped and prayed that he would change his mind and come back home
Michael
I was going to school before father left. But, I stopped right after that.
Michael
My mother decided to take me out of school all of a sudden. I thought she would take me back to school. I thought maybe, she would send me to a different school. Instead I was made to stay home and watch over my siblings who were just as unfortunate as me.
Michael
Things got real bad for us when father left. Mother had to work long hours to care for us. All she made from working so hard was only enough to pay the bills and provide food on the table.
Michael
I really prayed that things would change. I wanted mother to get a better job than the one she was doing. So that I and my siblings will be able to go to school again.
Michael
I really wanted that so much
Michael
Soon, I got used to my situation and accepted it. I realized my mother was doing the best she could for me and my siblings so I just had to accept whatever was coming my way.
Michael
So, at just the age of nine, I became the man of the house.
Michael
I was young to work then. But, I was the one who was taking care of my siblings while mother was away. I would cook, clean and wash before she got back.
Michael
I always waited up for her to come back home and always prepared her bath and warmed her food.
Michael
She did not like it when I did that and would always complain but I still did it anyway.
Michael
You see, right after my father left, my mother stopped smiling. She always had this stoic look on her face. She was always tired and did not look the same as she used to. I worried about her a lot and wanted to do the best I could to make her happy.
Michael
And the only way I knew is to do the house chores

I'm sure she might have appreciated what I did for her even though she never said so
Michael
Then one day, everything I knew changed
Michael
My little sister, Emma, fell gravely ill
Michael
She was coughing badly and had a high temperature. Mother did everything she could to help bring her temperature down but nothing seemed to work
Michael
So, she decided to take her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with pneumonia
Michael
Mother had no money on her. She had used up all the little money she had in buying drugs for Emma which did little to improve her condition
Michael
That was the first time I saw my mother break down and cry. I guess she was too scared to lose my sister. I felt bad for her and really wanted to help her. What could a nine year old do for his mother? Absolutely nothing.
Michael
I tried to comfort her but she moved away from me. Suddenly, she decided to step out of the hospital. I remember her words vividly
Fina
Stay with your sister. I have to go somewhere. I will be right back.
Michael
So after wiping the tears off her face, she left the hospital. I stayed in the room with my sister and was almost dozing off when she came back. She gently pat me on my shoulder and woke me up
Fina
How is your sister? Is she feeling better now?
Michael
I looked up at her and could not tell what her expression at that time was. She just stared straight at Emma as she spoke to me. That was when I realized we were not alone. A man had come with her. I stared at the man up and down and did not notice my mother looking at me
Fina
(with a frown on her face, she raised her voice) What are you looking at, boy? I never raised you to stare down at people like that. Be nice and greet Mr Winston.
Michael
My mother scolding me was nothing new. But there was something about this man that I just could not place. But I still greeted him anyway
Mr Winston
Hello. How are you? (he smiled)
Michael
He suddenly turned to my mother with a serious look on his face
Mr Winston
Fina, can I speak with you in private?
Michael
They both left the room. I just sat there and held my sister's hand as she slept soundly
Michael
After a while, they both came back.
Fina
I have been able to settle the bills. Very soon, your sister will come home with us.
Michael
I was delighted when mother said that to me. I wanted to go back home with Emma and play with her like we used to. I just could not wait to have her home with us.
Michael
Some days later, Emma was finally discharged. I was so happy when we got home and Tessa who was staying with a neighbor then, could not hide her joy.
Michael
We were all happy to have her back
Michael
That night, my mother said something to me that I never thought she would. She called me into the dining room to tell me the big news.
Fina
Michael. I called you here tonight to let you know that from tomorrow, you will no longer stay here with us. You will be staying with Mr Winston.
Michael
Mr Winston? But why?
Fina
Don't question me, boy. He will come and get you tomorrow, early in the morning. So I expect you to be ready when he gets here.
Michael
She got up and left me alone. I ran to her and held her hand in the hopes of stopping her. Maybe, for her to at least reconsider her decision. But instead, I was welcomed with a deadly glare.
Fina
You are going with him and that's final. (she growled)
Michael
Please mother. Don't do this
Michael
But all my pleading fell on deaf ears.

Going to my new home
Michael
The conversation with my mom left me crying. She did not care about me. Instead of comforting her son, she rather went into her room and slept like nothing had happened.
Michael
I tried to understand what had happened for my mother to suddenly decide kick me out of my own house
Michael
Why did she not care about how I felt? Did I truly mean nothing to her?
Michael
I sat in our small dinning room, crying my eyes out like there was no tomorrow
Michael
I did not want to live with a strange man. And neither did I want to leave my family.
Michael
All I wanted was to be with my mother and sisters and take care of them
Michael
That was all I ever wished for. And now, that was about to be taken away from me as well.
Michael
I did not know how I gathered myself into my small room but somehow I did. After I hit my bed, fresh tears fell from my eyes. I felt hopeless. Like my whole life was being taken away from me.
Michael
Before long, I was asleep. And all my problems seemed to have disappeared.
Michael
The next thing I knew, I was being tapped softly on the legs. I slowly opened my eyes and found my mother standing by my bedside looking at me with her arms crossed over her chest.
Michael
She did not look angry. She did not even look sad. She just had this look of indifference in her eyes.
Fina
Get up and get dressed. Mr Winston is here to take you.
Michael
Just like that, she left my room. I just sat up and rubbed my eyes off all the sleepiness I was feeling. Then it hit me. If Mr Winston is here, then that means I am leaving today. My mom could seriously have not decided to send me away. Why is she doing this? Was I bad son to her?
Michael
These questions run through my mind the entire time.
Michael
I slowly got out of my old bed and made my way to the bathroom. I quickly washed my face and got back into my room to get dressed.
Michael
I found my favorite shirt and jeans already laid out on the chair beside my bed. I picked them up and quickly got dressed
Michael
Then I rushed to the dinning room, the only spacious room in the house to meet up with my mother and Mr Winston.
Michael
I slowly walked up to the room when I heard my mother and Mr Winston talking. I was feeling very anxious. I had no idea what was in store for me now and it scared me a lot.
Michael
Slowly but painfully, I entered the room. The two adults suddenly stopped talking as soon as they laid their eyes on me. I really wanted to ask my mother why she was sending me away. I wanted to know. So, I approached her.
Michael
Mom, please. Why are you sending me away? Have I been a bad son to you? If that is the case, I apologize. I am sorry if I have done anything to trouble you
Michael
But please, don't send me away. I beg you.
Michael
I suddenly knelt in front of her making her jump up a bit. I began to cry and continued pleading with her to rescind her decision but she just sat there and looked at me as I continued to make a fool out of myself
Michael
When she had finally had enough, she grabbed me from the hard floor onto my feet and looked at me angrily like I disgraced her.
Fina
Enough of all of this! I have told you that you are going to live with Mr Winston and that's that. Don't get me angry. You are leaving right now before you wake your sisters up. ( she warned)
Michael
Please mother. I beg you. Have mercy on me. Please
Michael
She raised her hand to shut me up when another hand held hers
Mr Winston
I don't think it's wise for you to hit your child. He is clearly scared and you are making things worse. You should try to understand him instead of hitting him.
Fina
Get this boy away from here. I don't want his sisters coming here to meet him. I don't want to start explaining myself to them.
Michael
Mr Winston looked amused but at the same time glared at my mother
Mr Winston
Do you want him gone this bad?
Fina
(Looking at him with anger in her eyes) Take him before I change my mind.
Mr Winston
(Turning to me and kneeling in front of me) Michael, I know you are scared and I understand. Listen, I am not taking you away from your family. I am only taking you with me because I want you to have a good life. Don't you want to go back to school?
Michael
Of course I do. (Wiping the tears from my eyes with the back of my hand)
Mr Winston
That's good. Because I will be taking you to school and will be giving you all the good things life has to offer.
Michael
But, what about my family? My sisters? What will happen to them? Will I ever see them again?
Mr Winston
Of course you will. After we settle you very well in your new home, your sisters and even your mother will come and join us.
Michael
I was so happy when he said that. Oh, how stupid I was!
Michael
Really? I will really see them?
Michael
I smiled at the man for the first time. Maybe he was not that bad after all. I kept thinking he was really going to honor his words and take me to school.
Michael
I have always wanted a better life for my family. And I knew going back to school was the only way out
Michael
That way, I would be able to improve on my drawing skills as well

I thought everything was going to be alright

With a big smile on my face I walked over to my mother and hugged her with everything I have
Michael
I promise you mother that when I go to school and become someone important, I will come back for you and my sisters. And please tell them that I love them

I held on to her for what seemed like minutes before letting her go. She quickly turned away from us and faced the wall ahead of her.
Michael
I picked up my bag pack and Mr Winston also took my other travelling bag that had been sitting in the corner of the room the whole time.
Michael
I smiled gently at my mother once again before leaving the room with Mr Winston, without knowing what my fate will be
Mr Winston
Let's walk quickly so that we can catch the first bus.
Michael
I nodded and walked out of the house with him. Walking out of that house was the beginning of my woes.
New life
Michael
Mr Winston and I walked to the bus stop and waited. He placed the bag he was holding on the bench and asked me to sit. I nodded and sat down, while putting my bag pack on my lap.
Michael
The sun was yet to be up and the whole neighborhood seemed very quiet. There was no one at the bus stop except us.
Michael
Normally, the whole neighborhood is always noisy and filled with people all the time. Its a poor community where everyone knows everyone
Michael
So if it was quiet like this, then it means it's still early.
Michael
Mr Winston kept checking on his phone the entire time. He was also typing something on his phone and was not really paying attention to me
Michael
Whenever our eyes met, he would just smile and look away
Michael
I was still having weird feelings about him but I decided to brush it away
Michael
I wanted to give the man the benefit of the doubt. After all, I am going to live with him, right?
Michael
Soon, the bus arrived and we got on board
Michael
We sat at the back. When we settled down, the bus began to pull away.
Michael
That was when it really hit me that I was really going away from my home. The only family I know.
Michael
I fought back the tears that was threatening to fall. I sniffed it back in and leaned against the window. I fell asleep right after that

I felt someone pat me on the shoulder. I slowly opened my eyes and saw people getting down from the bus
Mr Winston
Hey, Michael. We are here. Wake up
Michael
I rubbed my eyes and sat up. Then picked up my bag. I followed Mr Winston when he made his way towards the door. We both got down from the bus and headed towards a direction
Mr Winston
I am sure you are happy to be moving in with me, right?
Mr Winston
Good. But first of all, I want us to go meet a friend of mine. He lives in the outskirts of town. Would you like to go with me?
Michael
(Shrugging my shoulders) Yes, sure. Let's go
Michael
So we left the bus station and picked a taxi along the road. Mr Winston told the driver where we were headed and the driver drove us straight to the place

When we got to a big house, the drive pulled up. We got down from the taxi and stood by the large gate
Michael
Is this where your friend lives?
Mr Winston
Yes. Let's go in. He is expecting me
Michael
I was surprised about the place. How could one person own this huge place? The house was further up some sort of a hill and the walk from the gate to the house was quite a distance
Michael
There were security everywhere
Michael
At the gate, Mr Winston pressed on some sort of a bell. Then a security man with a hardened face that could scare anyone appeared at the gates
Yes? How can I help you? Oh Mr Winston. Do come in. Boss is waiting for you
Mr Winston
Hello Dras. Thank you( he smiled at the guard)

The guard let us inside the house

The house was beautiful. There were different kinds of flowers and hedges at each side of the house. Making a path at the middle of the compound. We took the path that took us right to the house uphill

Seeing it closer made me realize how huge it was

It looked like a castle. That place could house a lot of people. I began to wonder how many people were living there
Michael
We finally got to the front of the house after walking there for about 15 minutes

A young man came out of the house and greeted us
Michael
He then took us inside and gave us a place to sit in the living room
Michael
The house was magnificent. All my life I have never lived in a huge house like this one. Everything in the house looked very expensive. From the carpet, to the furniture to everything else in the room

Everything was magnificent

We were seated when man came walking downstairs from the staircase that led straight into the living room
Michael
He looked older than Mr Winston and had a lot of charisma
Michael
The purple robe he was wearing was made of expensive silk. Well at least that is how I saw it
Mr Black
Winston. I was not expecting you to come till tomorrow.
Michael
The man and Mr Winston hugged each other
Mr Winston
Yes. It's just that I got your package earlier than I expected
Mr Black
I see. Well, welcome back. You know what, let's continue to talk in my office. We will be more comfortable there.
Mr Winston
Sure, sir. (He turned to me) Micheal, please sit here and wait for me.
Michael
I nodded and sat back down on my chair. I began to look around the house very well. There were young men every where
Michael
They were all doing something in the house. They were cleaning the house
Michael
Watering the flowers outside. And doing a lot of work in the house. It baffled me to see so many young men in the house. There were women but they looked much older than the men. I just shrugged it out and sat down
Michael
Soon, Mr Winston and the man came out of the office they had disappeared into
Mr Winston
Thank you so much Mr Black. I am really grateful for your generosity
Mr Winston
(turning to me) Michael, I want to tell you something. You will be staying with Mr Black in this house
Michael
But, why? I thought I was going to stay with you. What changed?
Mr Winston
Mr Black is the most suitable person to send you to school. Don't you want to go to school?
Mr Winston
And don't you want to stay in a place like this? To be frank with you, my house is smaller compared to this house. Mr Black will give everything you want. So please, be a good boy. And I will be coming by to see you as often as I can
Michael
I nodded sadly. I could feel all my happiness evaporating in front of me
Michael
Mr Winston just left me in the odd house with a man who kept looking at me weirdly
Michael
When he was sure Mr Winston was gone, he approached me and started touching my face. He turned my head side to side then smiled.
Mr Black
You are a very beautiful child. I am so fortunate to have you in my home
Michael
He smiled weirdly at me making me feel very uncomfortable.
