I'll never forget the night I heard banging and screaming. I ran down stairs without hesitation to find my mother laying on the floor. My father was standing over her yelling and screaming saying things so fast and mixed as if he was drunk, which he was.
I was only eight at the time so I was frozen at the bottom of the stairs, yet somehow I managed to scream at my dad and beg him to stop. After the shock and realization of me being there, he turned to me. He grabbed my neck and lifted me off the ground. He dug his nails into my throat causing me to bleed all while I was struggling to breathe.
I suddenly saw a glimpse of blue and red lights outside before he dropped me to the ground. I saw the door open before my eyes shut. When I came to my senses, I herded many people talking about me, but I couldn't wake up. It felt like a never ending dream except I didn't see anything. It was like I was in a dark room and all I could do was hear people on the outside.
I heard the word coma a few times the first day or week. I couldn't tell time in this state until I heard someone say "happy ninth birthday Nev." The only person to call me Nev (short for Nevaya) was people who'd known me since I was really little. Most of those people didn't contact us anymore or had past. This person started coming around more and I realized they were a man due to his voice.
I wanted to know who this guy was so bad and one day, my dark world suddenly had a white light. It was in the figure of a tall man. And when it reached me, I closed my eyes only to open them in a hospital room.
The nurses ran around checking my vitals and such. I was still confused on what was happening until I finally asked a nurse what was going on. She called in this strange woman who sat down in a chair next to me bed. "Hi Nevaya, my name is Karan. I'm a social worker who's going to help you." I didn't understand why she was here and where was my mom?! I guess she could see the confusion on my face and took a deep breath and let out a sigh. She stepped outside and made a call and soon after another woman walked in. They both sat down and the other introduced herself as doctor Jammie, she was a physiatrist.
I asked them what was going on and Jammie went on and on about things. Eventually she starts talking about abandonment and it all hit me. My mother had apparently left the hospital and never returned to see me. She then disappeared without a trace. My father was put in jail for attempt murder and child abuse. Which means I'd have to go live with a relative, but there wasn't anyone who would answer any calls. This meant I'd have to go into the "system". I didn't know what to do or say except "what about the man who visited me?" Both the doctor and social workers seemed so confused I explained that I heard a man's voice almost every day. They told me no one has visited me the entire seven months I was in a coma. They told me it was all probably just a dream or a mind trick. I zoned out most of the rest of the conversation.
The next few months I went to a few different homes. I struggled being around father figures which made it hard for me to find a home. This went on until I was 13 and I ran away from it all. I had about $500 by doing work for neighbors and such. I had been saving everything for 3 years just so I could escape. I knew exactly where I wanted to go and exactly what I wanted to do. I took a taxi all the way to the house I was raised in. When I arrived I saw lights inside and I went up to the window. I saw a family laughing and smiling while playing games in the living room. I started to walk to a park nearby that my parents used to take me too. I loved the swings and this bridge that was huge to me at the time, but it seemed smaller now. It was still high off the ground though. It was above water that I was surprised had not frozen over in the snow.
I climbed over the rails of the bridge and sat on a small ledge. I sat there for a while all huddled up trying to keep warm even though I knew it didn't really matter. I couldn't stand this anymore. I didn't wanna be here. Nobody wanted me. I was an orphan child with PTSD. I slowly stood up and I took a step off of the ledge landing in freezing water. I look up at the moon shining so bright before I closed my eyes.
I wake up hearing two people shouting at each other. I'm back in the hospital with no memory of what happened AGAIN! Suddenly in the blink of an eye, a man is yelling and screaming at me. "How in the world could you try and kill yourself Nev!!!!" Suddenly I connected the dots, this was the man who would visit me in the hospital! "Who are you?!" I asked and he looked taken aback. "Crap, I have been waiting all this time only to mess up so close! Look Nev… Please don't try to do this again. I'll be back for you in 5 years and I'll tell you who I am then…" And just as fast as he came, he was gone.
I went back to the system as if nothing had happened except no I had to go to counselling and psychiatrists for "help". They only made me feel worse. After about 3 years, they convinced me the man I kept hearing and seeing was just in my head. I was almost 18 and I finally had been in one place long enough to get a boyfriend. His name was Jake and he was 19. One day I brought him home. Right after we entered the door to my room, the guy I saw all those years ago returned. He pinned Jake up against the wall with his hands around Jakes neck and yelled "SHE'S MINE!!! I've waited 12 years for her and you will not take her away right before I can!!!" Jake started gasping for air when I too started yelling. "WHO ARE YOU!!!" Then he was suddenly in front of me. I just realized how tall he was. He had bright blue eyes and long red hair.
He took a deep sigh and snapped his fingers. Suddenly Jake was gone and it was just me and him. "My name is Val Anderson." he said. I responded "Like the president of Miller enterprise?" He nodded in agreement. There is literally a millionaire sitting in front of me. "Why do you keep appearing and disappearing?! And why did you say I was yours" I asked, trying to get some answers. "Do you believe in vampires?!" He said, I'm assuming he was trying to change the subject. I went to sit on my bed when suddenly I felt like there was someone behind me.
There was another tall man behind me. He had a knife grazing my skin and I heard Val shout. “WHAT DO YOU WANT BLAKE!” “Oh sweet Val, you know exactly what I want.” replied Blake. Val shook his head no to whatever this other man wanted. I then felt the blade pierce my neck. I couldn’t help but wince at the pain. Val tried to stay calm, but I saw him flinch. “You must not like your new toy Val” said Blake
. Blake then started to kiss my neck almost like he was testing the limits. I couldn’t say or do anything. Val tried to act as he didn't care until I felt something smooth, but sharp almost pierce my neck. That's when Val lost it. “WHATEVER YOU WANT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HER!!!” Val screamed. I suddenly notice a set of fangs forming in Val's mouth. Blake removed the knife and licked all the blood off my neck. “No wonder you fancy this human. She tastes delicious.” Val lost it and started to charge at Blake. He pushed me to the ground before accepting Val's challenge.
Val’s POV
I can’t lose Nev! I have to beat Blake, but before the fight even began, I smelt blood. When he threw her on the ground she must have hit her head. I had to make this fight quick. I look over at Blake and he’s distracted by the blood and I quickly stick my fangs in his throat and rip it all apart.I snap my fingers to call Ren. He’s been my best friend for over a century. He's like a butler, secretary, best friend, etc… He was all I ever needed until she was born. She is the one for me and I’ve waited 4 centuries for her. Whenever I see her, the world stops.
She's the reason I’m alive, I’ll do anything for her. I will always be by her side even if it means locking her up. I quickly rushed to check her injuries. She had a slight cut on her forehead but she seemed to be unconscious. I rushed her to the hospital just to make sure nothing else was wrong.
Nevaya’s POV
“What happened?” I wake up in the hospital again trying to recollect my thoughts. Suddenly I remembered everything. I search around trying to find Val, but he's nowhere to be seen. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing. I curl up in a ball and try not to cry. “Why does this feeling feel so familiar?” I mumbled to myself. “I don’t care who or what you are Val… Please don’t leave me too. You seem to be the only person in this world who cares.” I feel a slight breeze and then I hear “don't worry Nev, I’m right here.” I turned my head to see Val laying right next to me. I turn my body and then cuddle up against him and put my head on his cold empty chest. He wraps his arms around me and even though he’s cold, he still makes me feel warm.
I had fallen asleep and when I woke up, Val was still right there looking at me. I feel my cheeks heat up and I turn away. He turns me back around and holds me. We stayed like this for a few minutes until I asked him when I could leave. “You can leave whenever, but I don’t want you to go back to that house.”
