Nathan woke up to the sound of his mother’s voice — sharp, irritated, and way too loud for a Monday morning.
Elena Callahan
Nathan Callahan, if you’re not downstairs in five minutes, I swear—
He groaned, pulling the blanket over his face.
Nathan Callahan
Five more minutes, Mom! I’m having an important dream.
Elena Callahan
Dreaming won’t get you a degree! (yelling)
He cracked one eye open, squinting at the sunlight flooding his expensive, borderline messy room.
Designer jackets hung on a chair, textbooks half-buried under snacks, and his phone blinking with missed calls.
He sighed, running a hand through his messy hair before dragging himself out of bed.
By the time he went downstairs, his mother was standing by the door, arms crossed and patience hanging by a thread.
Elena Callahan
Do you even know what time it is?
He replied, slipping on his watch without looking.
Nathan Callahan
Time for me to go before you start another lecture.
Her glare could’ve set him on fire.
Elena Callahan
One day, Nathan, you’ll have to take life seriously.
He just grinned, kissing her cheek before escaping outside.
Nathan Callahan
I’ll schedule that for next year!
His shiny black car pulled up, and as soon as he slid into the passenger seat, the driver sped off toward school.
The morning sun hit his face as he leaned back, popping a mint into his mouth and opening his messages.
At the school gates, he spotted his usual crew — Dalton, Jasper, and Ryan — lounging like they owned the place.
Which, in some ways, they kind of did.
Ryan Archer
Morning, Sleeping Beauty!
Ryan Archer
Thought you’d ditched class again.
Nathan Callahan
Would’ve, if my mom didn’t threaten to disown me.
Nathan replied, bumping fists with them.
Jasper Finley
(smirk) So, party this weekend. But before that—
He leaned in, eyes glinting with mischief.
Jasper Finley
We’ve got a new dare.
Nathan Callahan
(raising a brow) Already? What’s it this time?
Dalton pointed subtly toward a figure sitting alone under a tree, sketchbook in hand, dark hair hiding most of his face.
Dalton Chase
The weirdo. The quiet one everyone avoids.
Nathan followed their gaze — and for the first time, curiosity flickered behind his smirk.
Dalton Chase
Yeah (grinning) Bet you can’t make him fall for you.
Nathan chuckled, pocketing his hands.

chapter 2
Nathan wasn’t one to back down from a dare.
He’d charmed teachers, crashed parties, and once convinced the head prefect to skip class — all for fun.
Getting a quiet guy to talk to him? Child’s play.
At least, that’s what he thought.
He spotted Elias again after lunch, sitting at his usual spot — under the same tree, sketchbook open on his knees.
The rest of the campus buzzed with chatter and laughter, but that small bubble around Elias stayed untouched, silent.
Nathan strutted over, hands in pockets, confident smile in place.
He tried again, leaning slightly forward.
Nathan Callahan
Mind if I sit here?
Elias didn’t even look up.
Elias Blythe
You already did.
That threw him off a little.
He said with a chuckle, taking a seat beside him anyway.
Nathan Callahan
I'm Nathan.
Nathan Callahan
…And you’re?
Elias Blythe
Not interested.
Nathan blinked, half-offended, half-impressed.
Nathan Callahan
Wow, straight to the point. You must be fun at parties.
Elias Blythe
I don’t go to parties.
A leaf dropped between them.
Nathan stared at him — messy black hair, faint shadows under his eyes, expression unreadable.
There wasn’t anything weird about him, really. He just looked… tired.
Like he’d given up trying to be understood.
Nathan Callahan
Are you always this talkative? (teasing)
Elias turned a page, still sketching.
Elias Blythe
Are you always this loud?
For a second, Nathan forgot he was supposed to be playing a game.
Nathan Callahan
You’re something else.
Elias Blythe
Please find someone else, then.
Nathan said, resting his chin on his hand.
Nathan Callahan
I kinda like sitting here.
Elias sighed, finally lifting his eyes — calm but distant, like someone looking through him rather than at him.
Elias Blythe
Whatever you’re trying to do, it’s not going to work.
Nathan Callahan
Who says I’m trying anything?
Elias Blythe
Your friends were laughing when you came this way.
Elias murmured, turning back to his sketch.
Elias Blythe
That’s usually a sign.
For the first time, Nathan had no clever reply.
He stood, brushing off his pants, smirk returning — but a little forced this time.
Nathan Callahan
See you tomorrow, then.
Elias didn’t answer, but Nathan could’ve sworn the faintest flicker of curiosity crossed his face as he walked away.

chapter 3
Dalton Chase
So, how’d it go, Romeo?
Ryan’s voice broke through the hallway noise as Nathan opened his locker.
His friends surrounded him, grinning like hyenas ready to pounce.
Jasper Finley
Let me guess.
Jasper Finley
He ignored you.
Nathan smirked, slamming the locker shut.
Nathan Callahan
He tried to. Didn’t work.
Ryan Archer
(chuckle) Sure, keep dreaming. That guy doesn’t even talk to teachers.
Nathan Callahan
Which makes it more fun.
Nathan replied, adjusting his tie lazily.
Nathan Callahan
Besides, when I win, I want a proper reward.
Ryan Archer
(raise a brow) Reward? What do you want, a trophy?
Nathan Callahan
Nah (grinning) Front-row seats at the next concert and you all pay for it.
Jasper Finley
Confident, huh? (snort) Bet you won’t last a week.
Nathan slung his bag over his shoulder.
Nathan Callahan
You should know me by now—I never back down from a challenge.
The bell rang, and the group sauntered toward class, late as always.
Whispers trailed behind them—girls giggling, someone sighing Nathan's name like he was the lead in a drama.
He flashed a charming grin out of habit, not really paying attention.
When they stepped into the classroom, the teacher gave them the look.
He muttered, scribbling something on the attendance sheet.
Jasper lied smoothly, taking a seat.
Nathan just smiled innocently and slid into his usual chair by the window.
At the back corner, near the wall, Elias sat with his head resting on his arms, half-asleep.
Sunlight streamed through the blinds, landing softly on his face—making him look less gloomy and more… peaceful.
Nathan tilted his head, studying him.
His hair fell over his eyes, his sketchbook closed beside him.
Everyone else ignored him, chatting or scrolling through their phones.
For a moment, Nathan forgot about the dare.
Dalton Chase
Yo, Nat (whispering, snapping him out of it) You staring already? Didn’t know you fell that fast.
Nathan kicked his friend lightly under the desk, smirk returning.
Nathan Callahan
Relax. Just checking the progress of my mission.
Dalton Chase
(grinning) Sure, sure. Keep telling yourself that.
Nathan leaned back, crossing his arms—but his gaze flicked toward the corner again.
