I ran down the corridor. I didn’t understand why this happened every single day. My brother wasn’t an unfriendly person - he was the opposite of me: an extrovert, a social butterfly. He only turned hostile on a few occasions - when someone crossed me, or when it involved that one person.
I reached the basketball court to find them locked in a brawl: my brother and Jude trading blows, both bleeding from cuts on their lips and faces. Nobody dared step in; everyone knew better than to break up one of their fights. Jude - the guy my brother hated for reasons I didn’t fully know - returned my brother’s hatred in full. Their rivalry was notorious across campus, probably tied to old history between Jude’s dad and ours. Whenever they bumped into each other, it ended like this.
I sprinted forward, grabbed my brother’s hand, and pulled him back. He went limp against me, easing out of the fight mostly to keep me from getting dragged in. Jude’s mouth curved into a sadistic smirk as he watched us walk away.

I sighed, standing in front of the mirror and staring at my reflection. Baggy clothes weren’t my favorite, but I didn’t like standing out, so they were always my go-to. Today, I wanted to disappear more than ever- it was the first day of college. First days were always exhausting: new stares, endless questions, and the worst one of all- “Are you a girl?” Ugh, nothing annoyed me more.
Yes, I had feminine features. Compared to my brother, who was a literal tank, I had a more fragile build. Not that I was actually weak- just looked like it. And the long hair? That just added fuel to everyone’s assumptions. I liked my hair, but people always had a problem with it. They judged everything about me based on how I looked.
I wished I could just take online classes and avoid dealing with people altogether. But Papa’s rules were clear: You have to mingle. That’s the only way to understand humans. I didn’t want to go to college.
