Chapter 1

Lightning split the sky, the sound of rain hammering the roof like a thousand restless hands. In the living room, a single lamp flickered, casting long, wavering shadows.
Ivory Williams crossed her arms, nails biting into her skin. All those years of late nights, of proving she was more than someone’s wife—it couldn’t all end here.

Mathew, I gave up two promotions for this marriage. Two. And now you expect me to throw away the career I’ve been clawing my way back to.
Mathew Williams stood near the window, jaw tight, eyes fixed on the storm outside. He could feel the tiny life pulsing like a secret between them, and the thought of losing it made his chest ache.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)

You call keeping our child ‘throwing something away’? That isn’t ambition, Ivory—that’s running from responsibility.
Ivory’s voice sharpened. Every word tasted of years she would never get back.
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)
Responsibility? Or just your idea of what a wife should be? You stay late at the firm, chase your goals, and I’m the one who pauses everything—again.
Mathew turned, the muscles in his face softening for a heartbeat. He wished she could see what he saw: a future that began with this child.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
This isn’t about me being a man. This is about a heartbeat that’s already there. Ours.
Ivory shook her head, frustration knotting her shoulders. A heartbeat. Poetry. Easy words for someone who wouldn’t lose his own body in the process.
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)
Don’t dress it up in poetry, Mathew. A heartbeat won’t give me back the years I’ve already sacrificed.
Mathew stepped closer, palms open, voice low. He could almost hear the echo of a tiny pulse, fragile and insistent.

You think a title or a corner office will silence the regret if we erase her? One day you’ll wake and wonder what we destroyed.
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)

And you’ll never understand the burden of carrying someone you’re not ready to nurture, because you’ll never have to carry it in your body
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
I may not carry her inside me, but I will carry her in every other way. I’ll shoulder whatever it takes. Just—don’t make this choice out of fear
Ivory’s voice broke, softer now. She could feel herself slipping between the person she was and the mother she might be, and it terrified her.
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)

It isn’t fear. It’s clarity. I know what it’s like to lose myself. I only just started to find me again.
Mathew’s eyes burned. He thought of the tiny life already bound to them, a promise he refused to betray.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)

And I know what it’s like to lose someone you love before you’ve even met them. I won’t stand by while that happens.....
Thunder rolled, deep and endless, rattling the windowpanes. Outside, the storm raged. Inside the quiet of the womb, the unborn child drifted in darkness, untouched and unaware of the battle for her existence...

Chapter 2

The storm had passed, leaving the world rinsed and bright.
Mathew Williams padded softly into the bedroom, a tray balanced carefully in his hands.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
Mathew Williams (FL Father)
Ivory, I made you ginger tea. Doctor said it might ease the nausea
Ivory lay propped against the pillows, eyes half-closed. Her hair spilled across the pillowcase like dark silk.
The tension from that night still lived somewhere between them, but lately it felt less like a wound and more like a scar—tender, yet healing.
Ivory Williams (FL Mother)

You’ve been waking earlier than me for weeks.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)

Someone has to keep an eye on you and our little tenant
A quiet laugh escaped her. Maybe, just maybe, she could believe that love and ambition could share the same space.

Weeks later, dawn broke with a sharp cry—not from the sky, but from Ivory herself.
She doubled over, gripping the edge of the kitchen counter.

Mathew… something’s happening.
Within minutes they were in the car, city lights blurring past. Mathew’s knuckles whitened around the steering wheel. Every contraction felt like a countdown, each red light a small eternity.
Hospital corridors smelled of antiseptic and rain carried in on coats. Nurses swarmed gently but swiftly.
Nurse

You’re at eight centimeters, Mrs. Williams. We’re moving to delivery.
Mathew kissed her damp forehead.

I’m right here. Breathe with me, Ivory.
She squeezed his hand so hard he thought the bones might snap, yet he never loosened his grip.

Hours later, the room settled into a hush broken only by the rhythmic beeping of monitors and the soft encouragement of the medical team.
Then—a cry. High, fierce, alive. The doctor placed a tiny, pink-skinned bundle onto Ivory’s chest.
Doctor
Doctor
Congratulations. A healthy baby girl.
Ivory stared, awed and trembling. All the nights of doubt, the words she couldn’t take back, dissolved at once.
Mathew Williams (FL Father)

She’s perfect… just perfect.
The baby’s fist curled around Ivory’s finger with surprising strength. Outside, sunlight spilled through the clouds, and for the first time in months, Ivory felt a calm as deep as the storm had once been loud.
