Mage
Roger… this can’t go on. You’re ruining your life. Please… stop.
Roger
(laughs bitterly) Stop? How, Mage? Tell me how. Do you even see me? I already lost everything.
Mage
You didn’t lose everything. You still have a career, people who care about you.
Roger
(snaps) People who care? Who? The directors who threw me out? The fans who only cheer when I’m perfect? Or you — stuck babysitting me because no one else wants the job?
Mage
(firm) I chose this job. And I’m still here, aren’t I?
Roger
(sighs, softer) I lost my father… now I lost her too.
Roger
(nods, voice shaking) She died. Just like that. They called it an accident, but to me— (pauses, swallows hard) to me, it was punishment.
Roger
Don’t. Don’t tell me it wasn’t my fault. It was mine. If I hadn’t told her I was busy with the concert, she wouldn’t have rushed to meet me that night. She wouldn’t have taken that road.
Mage
(steps closer) You can’t know that.
Roger
(voice rising) I do know! She was in a hurry because of me. Because I chose the stage over her.
Mage
She loved you, Roger. She wouldn’t want you to drown like this.
Roger
(laughs harshly, then breaks) She was pregnant, Mage. Did you know that? She was going to surprise me. We were going to be married. I was going to be a dad. And now— (his voice cracks) now it’s gone. Everything.
Episode 2
Mage
(stunned silence, then softly) …Pregnant?
Roger
(nods, eyes wet) Yeah. She kept it from me until she was sure. Said she wanted to tell me in person.
Roger
That night… she was coming to see me. That’s why she was rushing. And because of me… she never made it.
Roger
(cuts him off) I should’ve been there. I should’ve held her hand, told her it was okay, that I’d cancel the damn concert, that she mattered more than all the screaming fans.
Roger
But I didn’t. I told her, “Later. I’m busy.” (pounds fist on the table) And later never came.
Mage
(quiet but firm) Blaming yourself won’t bring her back.
Roger
(glares) Then what do you want me to do? Forget her? Pretend she never existed? Go sing another love song under fake lights while she— while they— are gone?
Mage
No. I want you to grieve, but not destroy yourself. She wouldn’t want her memory to rot inside a bottle of whiskey.
Roger
(bitter laugh) You think you know what she’d want? You didn’t know her.
Roger
You Didn’t feel her hand in yours at night, or hear her laugh when she teased me about my stage makeup.
Roger
You didn’t hear her whisper she wanted a family. I did. And I threw it away.
Mage
(soft but steady) You didn’t throw it away. Life is cruel, Roger. You loved her. She loved you. That doesn’t vanish because of tragedy.
Roger
(whispers) I was going to be a dad, Mage… (breaks down, covers face with his hands)
Roger
I was finally going to have a family. Not the broken one I grew up in… a real one. And now I’ll never know.
Episode 3
Mage
(kneels beside him) I know it hurts. I can’t fix that.
Mage
But you’re still here.
Mage
And because you’re here, you can honor her, honor that child, by living not destroying yourself
Roger
(silent, then shakes head) I don’t know if I can.
Mage
Then let me carry some of it with you. You don’t have to do this alone.
Roger
(meets his eyes, trembling) And if I fall again?
Mage
(firm) Then I’ll be there to pull you back up. That’s my job. That’s my choice.
Roger
(exhales, broken) I don’t deserve it.
Mage
(softly) Maybe not. But she would want you to try. For her. For the child.
Roger
(long pause, then whispers) For them…
