Kia groaned as his phone buzzed against the nightstand, the chime drilling into his half-dreams. He dragged a hand over his face, black-and-pink bangs sticking up in every direction.

Kia dragged himself out of bed, still half-asleep, his black-and-pink hair a complete mess. He yawned, slipped on his slippers, and padded down the staircase, each step slow like the stairs were his enemy.
The scent of fresh coffee and buttered toast drifted from the kitchen. At the table sat his mother poised as always, her expensive blouse far too fancy for a casual morning. A glass of orange juice sparkled beside her plate as if even breakfast had to look elegant in this house.

Finally,” she said without looking up from her phone. “Do you realize how long I’ve been calling you?”

Kia rolled his eyes, sliding into a chair. “Relax, Mom. I’m here, aren’t I?”

She gave him a sharp look, but there was a faint smile at the corner of her lips. “One day, Kia, that attitude of yours…”

He just smirked, grabbing a piece of toast. “Yeah, yeah. Good morning to you too.”
Kia grabbed a slice of toast, stuffed it into his mouth, and started chewing obnoxiously loud on purpose. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.

Kia.” His mom’s voice carried a warning tone, but her eyes never left the glowing screen of her phone.

Kia crunched loudly on his toast, talking around the bite just to get on his mom’s nerves.

Kia looked away, jaw tight. He hated it. Hated the way the word “Omega” always made him feel small, like no matter what he did, the world had already decided his place.
