CHAPTER 1 — Glass Among Diamonds
She walked like she didn’t belong... because she didn’t.
Not in the grand halls of Silvergate University.
Not among the polished shoes and polished names.
Not beneath chandeliers that cost more than her entire life.
Her shoes were worn but clean. Her black backpack was stitched where the seam had torn. Her clothes were plain. Not designer. Not tailored. Just practical. Just enough.
Because enough was all she ever had.
Heads turned as she passed. Not in admiration.
Whispers trailed behind her like smoke.
Someone sneered under their breath.
Another voice said, dripping with disdain.
"Poor thing, Thinks she's one of us."
But Ember didn't flinch. Not today. Not ever.
Her spine stayed straight, her chin a little higher. There was nothing crueler than the world she had already survived.
Not the late nights working back-to-back shifts in the café. Not the cold winters with no heater.
Not the birthdays she celebrated alone.
Not even the silence that followed her everywhere—echoing in dorms, classrooms, corridors.
She had learned early that no one was coming to save her.
So she became her own savior.
Every book she carried was a promise to herself.
Every sleepless night spent studying was a battle.
Every A+ was a quiet rebellion.
Because they could have everything—wealth, privilege, power.
But they could never take her mind. Never her soul. Never her fire.
That was her name. A quiet flame.
Not flashy. Not wild. But steady. Alive. Unburned.
She had seen the worst of the world already.
And yet… she still chose kindness.
She still chose hope.
Even when they shoved her in hallways.
Even when her coffee “accidentally” spilled on her assignments.
Even when their laughter echoed like wolves circling prey.
She kept going.
Alone. Always alone.
But never broken.
Because behind the quiet smile, behind the soft eyes and second-hand clothes, there was something none of them could see.
And one day, that fire would burn through all of them.

CHAPTER 2 — The Weight of Silence
The morning air bit at her cheeks as Ember stood outside the bus stop, pulling her scarf tighter around her neck. The cold always made the city quieter—less shouting, fewer horns, just the steady rhythm of footsteps and wind.
Ember / FL
I'm getting late
*waiting for the bus*
She liked the quiet. It didn’t ask anything of her. It didn’t mock her or demand she explain why she looked like a ghost haunting the world of the living.
Her fingers were numb by the time the bus arrived.
Ember / FL
*She sat in the back seat, like always*
Away from the stares. Away from the perfume-drenched girls and boys who spoke in money.
They never acknowledged her. She was invisible. Or worse—visible only when someone needed a TARGET.
Ember / FL
*walking fast and going in her class*
She got off two blocks from campus. Walked fast. Head down. Not because she was ashamed.
But because she didn’t want to waste energy giving them what they wanted—her REACTION.
At Silvergate, everything shimmered. Buildings with ivy crawling up stone walls.
Students with last names that had their own Wikipedia pages. Professors who played chess with CEOs and politicians.
It was a kingdom, and for them Ember… was the beggar girl who had slipped through the gate.
She walked into the main building just as the first bell rang. Her bag was heavy with books—too heavy for someone her size—but she had stopped noticing the weight.
Ember / FL
(You get used to carrying things alone when no one helps you put them down.)
*get inside the classroom*
Her first class was Finance. The room was already full. She took her usual seat at the far left corner—front row, but tucked away, close to the wall. Close to escape.
*ignore the table and coffee*
The professor didn’t look at her. He never did.
But one pair of eyes did.
Vivienne Langford
*glares at Ember*
Vivienne Langford. Platinum blonde. Nails like claws. Daughter of a tech giant and future heiress to a billion-dollar empire. She sat at the center of the room like a queen on her throne. And like every queen, she needed someone to crush under her heel.
Vivienne Langford
Morning, Ember.
*she said, her voice honeyed and sharp*
Vivienne Langford
Still wearing that same sad sweater? Or is it your uniform now?
The class chuckled. Some louder than others.
Ember / FL
*didn’t answer and focus on her books*
Ember didn’t answer. She never did. Silence was safer than sparring with wolves.
Vivienne Langford
Guess vintage is in this year.
*muttered, loud enough to be heard*
Ember / FL
*sighs and looking down*
The professor entered, saving Ember from another round. But not from the heat crawling up her neck.
The lecture passed in a blur. Ember took notes, focused on the board, ignored the giggles, the paper balls tossed in her direction, the pen that rolled to her feet and was never retrieved.
After class, she slipped out before anyone else. One breath. Then another. Then down the hall, across the courtyard, into the library.
The library was her only sanctuary. Quiet. Dusty. Unbothered.
She took the back table. Opened her notebook. Studied. Read. Escaped.
By noon, she was on the bus again. Heading toward her job.
The café sat on a quiet corner of downtown. Warm lights. Bitter coffee. People coming and going, never staying long.
Ember / FL
Here is your order, Enjoy!
*said and smiles softly*
Ember liked it. It asked nothing of her. She brewed, served, cleaned. Took tips when they give—rarely. Smiled when expected. Hid when possible.
By evening, her feet ached. Her body tired. Her soul, humming with quiet rage.
On her way home, she stopped by the corner store. Ramen. Tea. Toothpaste. Essentials.
As she walked the final stretch to her tiny rented room above a laundromat,
Something shifted in the air. A prickle on the back of her neck. A chill that wasn’t from the wind.
She stopped.
Looked behind her.
Nothing. Just a shadow slinking around the corner.
Ember / FL
Maybe a cat.
*mumbled*
She shook it off. Climbed the stairs to her room. Locked the door. Bolted it.
Ember / FL
*she collapsed on her bed without changing. Just lay there. Staring at the ceiling*
Ember / FL
Another day survived.
But something was changing. She could feel it.
She just didn’t know yet… if it would be for better.
