THE ORPHAN VICTIM

Episode One; By Adedeji Abayomi

There I was on the hospital bed, I couldn't move my leg or my body then I was thinking about my life. My name is Benedict but people usually call me Ben. I was an orphan with no place to go I was brought to the hospital because of an injury and this is my story.

When I was a small child I was the only child of my parents and I was born with a silver spoon, and went to a rich school in Lagos. One day his father, was coming back from work, he couldn't take his car because it had a fault and it was at his mechanic place, so he decided to trek, as he was coming he was supposed to cross the pedestrian bridge, he was in a hurry and he crossed the big road as he was crossing the road a big, long trailer hit him and stepped on him and he died instantly.

As my mum a full house wife as she heard the bad news she fainted quickly.

A hour and 30 minutes later

The boy their only child Benedict who was in boarding school and came to enjoy his holiday with his parents. As he entered the house he saw his mum lying on the ground, she wasn't breathing no longer a boy of 13 years, he quickly went to the kitchen and brought out a big bowl of water and poured it on her face, and he was blowing breeze on her face with an hand fan. After 20 seconds she stood up and asked her what happen.

''Mum what happen, how do you faint'' Ben asked

''Your dad is gone'' Mum said angrily and stood up

' gone how could he be gone as he travelled or did he died, God forbid daddy can't die, or he has travelled to London because he had been talking about that trip but he could have take me, but why did mum faint did dad divorce her ' I thought.

''mum where did he go''

''he his gone for good''

''where mum, where''

''leave me, he will come'' Mum responded acting sarcastically behaving mad and was talking to herself.

At Night

I haven't seen Dad and he his not usually late like this so I picked mum phone and call Dad's number but it was switched off. In every conversation mum and anyone has through her phone is always been recorded so he checked the last conversation that happened today and it was dad number that called mum.

Recorder; ''Hello who am i speaking with'' A strange voice said holding dads phone

' this is not my dad voice ' Ben thought

''Well ma your husband was hit by a trailer

''and where is he''

''He kicked the bucket The strange man said, as the phone slipped from mum hand.

' what is kick the bucket [and I went to Google and searched the meaning it means Dad] what my dad can't die so that's why mum faint ' He thought.

He went downstairs and he didn't see his mum, because our house is a storey building I searched every where but couldn't see her. So I took a car out of the ten cars my parent had. I could drive but it was against the law. I was driving a small black Toyota Camry. As I wanted to enter the estate gate I wore my dad favorite cap. As the gate man held his hand to stop the car I stopped. The Estate gate man was holding a old [shakabula] a local gun and I whined down the car glass,

''Hez who be dis'' The Security said in pidgin

''[changing my voice] Its Benedict Father from that side'' I said but I was afraid

''you fit go, sorry sir'' The Security said.

And he opened the Estate gate and I came out of the gate and I saw a car that look like one of our car it was burning.

I saw a car that looks like one of my parents own that's the car missing in our garage and its burning I parked the car and I came out with a fire extinguisher I move towards the car spraying the extinguisher to curb some of the flames at the door side and I opened the car mum burning body fell down and I offed the fire that was burning on her and I offed the flames on the car all she could say was

''go pls Kidnappers are here''

' who are the kidnappers, why would they burn mum car [looking at the car that still look okay] who will drive this car away from here so I can go out of this mess and give Mum a befitting burial ' I thought then I called our gateman with Mum phone because I forgot mine at home.

CALL; ''Hello madam'' The Gateman said

''Hello its Ben'' Ben said

''Benedict why you dey use Madam phone call''

''That's why I call you''

''Benedict wey Madam dey''

''Just come this one is an emergency

''where you dey''

''I will send you an address "

''ok''

''I have sent it'' He said as he ended the call looking left and right.

20 MINUTES LATER

I waited for the gateman looking around the corner it was late its already 11;30 PM almost midnight as I was calling his number he wasn't picking the call, then I saw him running holding a gun because all security in that estate is entitled to just a gun as he was running towards me, a bullet hit him from the back and he was shot dead. I started to run and some men holding gun were chasing me and the outran me and cover my nose with a handkerchief and before I knew it I had lost my consciousness and fell down I couldn't stand up.

I woke up and my head was paining me it was an headache and I haven't been in this kind of place before, and I cant remember entering this place at all, I tried to stand up but my leg was tied and it was aching too. My hands and mouth were tied, it was only my nose that wasn't covered. Suddenly I heard a woman voice she was shouting is like she is been raped. On the right side I heard a man making a noise and a voice of Steaming Iron is like they are pressing steam on him. I heard the sound of dogs its like they are up to three. Suddenly I received two slaps and two hefty men's carried me up because I was short and they opened a tape in my mouth finally I could talk.

''Let me go'' Ben said.

''Shut up'' A man said from the back and he slapped me which made me cry.

I climbed a stair as we were walking I was afraid not to fall because I couldn't see and I wanted to eat I was very hungry and I was holding my stomach and an Igbo man walked up to me and I touched him I think he is wearing a Taxido. As I was rubbing my stomach the man asked me

''Hez what happen you wan chop'' The man said which name was Kenga.

''Yes sir can you give me water'' Ben asked.

''u na bi mami water ni [are you a mermaid]'' Kenga said and I couldn't answer him because I don't know what he his saying maybe his joking.

''[a chubby man hit me on my back and pushed me to the front] Move, boss want to see you'' Tunji said.

I got to the boss office, and they untied my eye's. Their boss was very tall and a little hefty but he has a pot belly and he his a little fat, he looks wicked and how he speaks make me scared and he had up to thirty scars on his face. His name was Jaguar.

''Why are you laughing you wey suppose to dey cry'' Kenga said.

''Jaguar, Jaguar my father killer's of all lions this is the boy'' Tunji said.

''Jaguar even the tiger is afraid of you'' Kenga said.

''what is your name little boy'' Jaguar said.

''Benedict, but they call me Ben'' I said.

''no dey talk too much for Jaguar presence " Kenga warned me.

''How old are you'' Jaguar asked me.

''Am 13 years'' I said.

''Next time add sir'' Kenga warned me again.

''well you are fit for the job and your name will be Benzo from now on'' Jaguar said.

''Sir, which job'' I asked Mr. Jaguar.

''no dey ask Jaguar question again he go kill you'' Kenga said.

''Never ask me a question am the only one that ask question'' Jaguar said.

''yes boss'' Tunji said as he and Kenga slapped me.

''Take him to their room and remember [facing me] don't think of escaping'' Jaguar said as I laughed inside of me because I had an escape plan.

I was taken to a room where 10 peoples had occupied 6 boys and 4 girls. The room was still better than where I was in, the room has 3 big mats and I laid down on one and there was two toilet as I was lying on the mat the other children were staring at me as if I was a Thief.

'well I have to adapt to this place, and are they the one that killed mum, why did they kill her Is she proving stubborn and why would they born the car' I thought as tear's were rolling down my cheek and I was interrupted by one hefty boy who Is the tallest out of all of us and he pushed me.

''Shift you are thighting [squeezing] me'' The boy France said.

''But there is no more space should I sleep on the ground'' I voiced out.

''Yes, Benzo sleep there that's not my fault'' France said as he pushed me away.

''come and join us here don't mind him'' A boy said and they were three on the mat and I joined him.

''Thanks, what's your name'' I asked the boy.

''Oladele John but people call me Johnanu'' The Boy said.

''well my name is Benedict but Mr. Jaguar call's me Benzo'' I said ''do you like this place''.

''I don't know'' John said.

''well which work do we do'' I asked him.

''we hawk buns and egg roll and fish roll'' John said.

''ok oh good night'' I said because I was hungry and I want to sleep even though I knew I wont sleep comfortably.

''Good Night'' John said.

By the next day I woke up late because am used to it, I sat up and looked around seeing no one and I regained my memory. I went straight to the door thinking about how to escape as I opened the door my nose Inhaled the smell of buns.

''OH you have wake up, I dint want to wake you up before, Have your bath and join us'' John told me while eating.

I took my bath and joined them.

I was given 50 buns in a big covered plastic, the buns were big and I was to earn 1500 and I must sell all. John was given 100 pieces to hawk and he followed me leading the way.

''you follow the left of the bustop and I will follow the right and remember we must sell all or else we will be in big trouble'' John told me.

''ok thanks'' I said sadly.

I shouted as I saw a customer in a car as I wanted to meet the person a boy hawking plantain snatched her from me as I saw another person France snatched the person away from me, I tried to run away by following a bus and I dropped the bucket of buns and Kenga saw me and ran after me slapping my face and took me back to my place.

''Be careful this is Eko you go lost oh'' Kenga said.

I sold just 5 and it was in the evening and John saw me

''were have you been lets go'' John said.

''thanks I was lost and I sold only 5'' I said.

''What Ben, 5 buns I sold mine leaving nothing Sorry oh but they will discipline you'' John said.

''ah just 5 what will they do to me'' I said crying.
