Between the Lines
Just Another Day
Emma
Hey, you ready for practice today? I’m heading to the library after school, so good luck out there!
Jake
Haha, thanks! You know I’ve got to keep The team strong. Wish you were out here with me.
Emma
You know sports aren’t really my thing. I’ll cheer you on from the sidelines… or from a book. 😄
Jake
True, but you’re my biggest fan anyway. Plus, your creative brain probably helps me strategize more than you think.
Emma
Maybe! I’m more about words than goals. You’re the one running around chasing the ball.
Jake
Yeah, but I love how you always listen to my crazy game stories. Keeps me sane.
Emma
Someone’s gotta balance out all that energy. I’m your calm in the chaos.
Jake
And I’m lucky to have you. So, library after school? Need a study buddy?
Emma
Definitely. You can help me with history if you promise not to bore me with soccer stats.
Jake
Deal. But only if you promise to come to at least one game this season.
Emma
We’ll see. For now, I’ll stick to cheering and writing my novel.
Jake
Fair enough. Best friends first, always.
Emma
Always. Catch you later, captain.
After the Field, After the Page
Jake
Just finished practice. Coach went easy on us today. How was the library? Did you conquer your word count?
Emma
Hey! Almost. Got a really good chunk done on Chapter 5. My main character finally met her rival, it was intense.
Jake
Oh, nice! The one with the dragons, right? Or is this the one with the magic schools?
Emma
Haha, neither, that's the next one. This is the one with the hidden magical city. You really should pay more attention when I tell you about my plots.
Jake
Hey, I try! There are a lot of complex fantasy worlds floating around in your head. It’s hard to keep up.
Emma
It's not that complex. But I’m still buzzing from it. My fingers are cramping, though.
Jake
Sounds like a good kind of buzz. So, does this mean you’re going to bed early or staying up to write more?
Emma
Probably the latter. My brain's still racing. But maybe I'll give it a break after a few more paragraphs.
Jake
Smart. Don’t want to burn out. Need those creative juices flowing. You were saying earlier you felt a bit stressed about everything, still feeling that?
Emma
Yeah, a little. It’s just… trying to keep up with school, and pushing myself with the novel, and feeling like I need to nail everything. It gets a lot sometimes.
Jake
I get it. It’s a lot to juggle. Remember what I said? If you need to vent, or just chill and not think about dragons or rival magical cities, I’m here.
Emma
Thanks, Jake. Really. You’re always good at reminding me to breathe.
Jake
That’s what best friends are for. So, ready for me to read that Chapter 5 you just wrote? I’m still waiting to be hooked.
Emma
Haha, you better be. I'm sending it over now. Don’t be too hard on it!
Jake
No promises. Just kidding. Mostly.
Unspoken Things
Emma
Hey, thanks for reading Chapter 5 last night. Your feedback was… brutal but helpful.
Jake
Haha, I told you I don’t sugarcoat. But seriously, your writing’s getting better every day.
Emma
Thanks. It means a lot coming from you. I’m just worried I’m not good enough sometimes.
Jake
You’re way too hard on yourself. Remember when you helped me prep for that big game last year? You believed in me when I didn’t. I’m here to do the same for you.
Emma
Yeah, I remember. You always had my back, even when I was drowning in essays and deadlines.
Jake
Speaking of deadlines, how’s your family? You mentioned some stuff last week.
Emma
It’s… complicated. My mom’s been working extra shifts, and my little brother’s been acting out at school. I feel like I’m stuck trying to hold everything together.
Jake
That sounds rough. Wish I could do more than just listen.
Emma
Just being there helps more than you know. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who sees what’s really going on.
Jake
You’re not alone, Emma. You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.
Emma
Thanks, Jake. I guess I’m scared of messing up — school, family, this whole writing thing. What if I’m not enough?
Jake
You’re more than enough. You’ve got heart, talent, and the kind of strength that doesn’t always show on the surface.
Emma
You always know what to say. Maybe that’s why I’m scared… because I don’t want to lose this — us.
Jake
You won’t. We’re in this together, no matter what happens.
Emma
Together. I like the sound of that.
