Between Us

Between Us Chapter 1: something more

The morning air was crisp as Sophie walked across campus, her hands wrapped tightly around a cup of coffee. Autumn leaves crunched beneath her boots, painting the ground in shades of amber and red. Students hurried past her, but she moved at her own pace, savoring the rare quiet before her first class.

She reached their usual bench near the old oak tree — their spot — and sat down. The breeze tugged at the loose strands of her hair as she opened her laptop, preparing for her literature notes.

“You’re early for once.”

She looked up, her lips curling into a smile. Caleb stood there, slightly out of breath, his backpack slung over one shoulder. His dark hair was tousled, as if he’d just rolled out of bed — which, knowing him, he probably had.

“I’m always early,” she teased.

Caleb scoffed, sitting beside her. “You’re early for you. That still counts as late for most people.”

She laughed, her eyes dancing. “Did you at least bring peace offerings?”

Without a word, he reached into his bag and pulled out a muffin, handing it to her. She raised an eyebrow but took it, breaking off a piece.

“See?” he said. “I know how to survive.”

Sophie shook her head, amused. This was them — the banter, the comfort, the familiarity. They’d been friends since high school, sticking together even after ending up at the same university. It was easy between them. Always had been.

Yet, lately, something felt different. She couldn’t pinpoint when it started — the way her stomach fluttered when he smiled, or how her heart sped up when their hands brushed accidentally. Maybe it was always there, buried beneath years of friendship.

“So,” he said, pulling out his camera, “Photography club’s recruiting new members. Thinking about joining.”

“You should,” Sophie encouraged. “Your photos are amazing.”

He glanced at her, holding her gaze for a second longer than usual. She felt her face grow warm but quickly looked down at her laptop.

“Thanks,” Caleb murmured, his voice softer now.

For a moment, neither spoke. The silence wasn’t awkward, but charged — filled with words neither dared to say aloud.

“Hey, Sophie?”

She looked back at him.

“Do you ever think about… how things change?” His voice was quiet, almost hesitant.

Her chest tightened. “Change?”

“Yeah. Like… people growing apart, or closer. Life pulling people in different directions.”

She paused, searching his expression. There was something vulnerable in his eyes, something careful, as though he was testing the waters.

“I think… sometimes change can be good,” she said softly. “Even scary changes.”

Their eyes locked again, and for a heartbeat, the world around them faded. She wondered if he felt the same pull she did — that invisible thread drawing them closer.

But before either could say more, her phone buzzed, snapping the moment in two.

“I… I have to get to class,” she said, standing abruptly.

“Yeah,” Caleb replied, his tone neutral, though his eyes lingered on her.

As she walked away, her heart pounded against her ribs. She didn’t look back, but she could feel his gaze following her — and wondered if today was the day everything quietly began to shift between them.

Between Us Chapter 2:Mixed Signals

Caleb couldn’t focus in class.

The professor’s voice droned on, a blurry background to the one thing occupying his mind — Sophie. The way she’d looked at him earlier, the tiny hesitation before she left, the way her eyes lingered just a second too long.

He ran a hand through his hair, sighing quietly. What was wrong with him? They were friends. They’d always been friends. This shouldn’t be complicated.

But it was.

He glanced over his notes — half-written sentences and absentminded doodles filled the page. Great. Another class wasted.

When the lecture finally ended, he grabbed his things and headed toward the campus café. Their usual spot.

Sophie was already there, seated at their table in the corner, her head tilted as she read. Strands of her hair fell over her face, and she tucked them behind her ear without looking up. The afternoon light streamed through the window, casting a soft glow on her.

Caleb paused for a moment, watching. How long had he been seeing her like this — not just as his best friend, but as something more?

He shook his head and walked over.

“Hey,” he greeted, forcing his voice to sound casual.

Sophie looked up, flashing him a smile. “Hey. I got your usual.”

He glanced at the cup she’d pushed toward him. Warm caramel latte, extra shot — just how he liked it.

“Thanks,” he said, sitting down across from her.

They fell into their usual rhythm, discussing class assignments, teasing each other, sharing stories from their day. On the surface, nothing had changed.

But beneath it, everything had.

“Hey, so… there’s a party Friday night,” Sophie said suddenly, breaking the flow. “Maya wants to drag me out. You should come.”

“A party?” Caleb raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah.” She laughed. “It might be fun. And it’s not like you ever do anything social outside of me and Liam.”

He chuckled, pretending to take offense. “That’s not true. I’m very social. I talked to the barista today.”

Sophie giggled, her eyes crinkling at the corners — the way they always did when she was genuinely amused.

“So?” she asked, nudging him gently. “You’ll come?”

Caleb hesitated. Parties weren’t his thing. But being around Sophie? That was always worth it.

“Yeah,” he said finally. “I’ll come.”

She smiled brightly. “Good.”

As they settled back into their conversation, Caleb noticed it again — the tiny moments. Her foot brushing his under the table, her glances when she thought he wasn’t looking.

Or maybe he was imagining it. Maybe he was reading into things that weren’t there.

But then Sophie did something small — something that unraveled him.

She reached over to fix the sleeve of his jacket, her fingers grazing his wrist. For a second, neither of them moved. Neither spoke.

The warmth of her touch lingered even after she pulled her hand back.

“Your sleeve was crooked,” she said softly, avoiding his gaze.

Caleb swallowed. “Thanks.”

They both fell silent, the air between them thick with words unspoken.

Maybe Friday night would finally give him the chance to figure out if this spark was real — or if it was all in his head.

Between Us Chapter 3: The Party

The music was louder than Caleb expected.

Bass thumped through the walls of the crowded off-campus house. Strings of fairy lights hung across the ceiling, and clusters of students filled every corner — talking, laughing, dancing. It was chaos, but beneath it all, Caleb only focused on one thing: finding Sophie.

He scanned the room until he spotted her near the kitchen, laughing with Maya and a small group of people. Her burgundy dress stood out against the sea of darker outfits, hugging her frame in a way that made his stomach tighten.

Sophie saw him at almost the same moment, her face lighting up. She excused herself from the group and walked over, weaving through the crowd with practiced ease.

“You made it,” she said, her smile wide.

“Of course.” Caleb stuffed his hands into his pockets, trying to appear calm even though his pulse was doing the opposite.

“You clean up nice.” Sophie’s eyes flickered over him briefly. He’d actually put some effort in — a fitted black button-down, dark jeans — not his usual hoodie-and-sweatpants look.

“You too,” he managed, his voice softer.

For a moment, they stood there, slightly awkward, slightly charged.

“Come on,” she said, grabbing his hand without hesitation. “Let’s get drinks.”

Her fingers wrapped around his as she pulled him toward the kitchen. It was casual, friendly — but even so, Caleb couldn’t stop noticing how warm her hand felt in his.

They poured drinks, talked, laughed with Maya and a few others. Everything felt normal again. But that normalcy was deceptive — thin ice over deep water.

As the night wore on, more people arrived, and the party swelled. Maya disappeared into the crowd, leaving Sophie and Caleb alone again.

“You okay?” Sophie asked, leaning in so he could hear her over the music. Her breath was warm against his ear, and the closeness made his chest tighten.

“Yeah. I just…” He hesitated, his words sticking in his throat. “Crowds aren’t really my thing.”

Sophie smiled knowingly. “Mine either.”

They stood there for a beat, eyes meeting in the low light. Caleb felt the weight of the words he hadn’t said all week — the thoughts he kept burying. But standing here, so close to her, it was getting harder to ignore.

Before he could say anything, someone approached — a guy from Sophie’s literature class.

“Hey, Sophie,” the guy said, flashing a confident grin. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Hey, Ryan.” Sophie smiled politely. “Yeah, Maya dragged me out.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened slightly. He recognized Ryan — tall, charming, the type of guy who seemed to float through college on easy confidence.

“You want to dance?” Ryan asked, already holding out his hand.

Sophie blinked, clearly caught off guard. She glanced briefly at Caleb — her hesitation lasting just a moment.

Caleb’s heart pounded.

“I… uh…” Sophie started, biting her lip.

“You should,” Caleb said quickly, forcing a small smile. “Have fun.”

Sophie hesitated one last second, but finally nodded and let Ryan lead her to the dance floor.

Caleb stood there, watching as Sophie disappeared into the crowd of swaying bodies. The flicker of disappointment burned sharper than he expected.

He turned away, gripping his drink a little too tightly.

What are you doing, man? Liam’s voice echoed in his head. You’re gonna let her slip away?

Caleb closed his eyes briefly, his chest aching. The truth was simple.

He didn’t want to be her friend anymore.

He wanted more.

And he was starting to realize just how badly.
