The afternoon sun blazed over campus, spotlighting the cherry blossom tree where Seraphina, the campus goddess, stood surrounded by her usual sircle of admirers.
Emrys clutched a small, gift-wrapped box and a handwritten letter, his heart pounding against his ribs.
Emrys Murray (MC)
Today's the day. No turning back now.
He approached, nerves unraveling with every step.
Emrys Murray (MC)
Seraphina. (voice trembling)
She turned, perfectly glossed lips curling into practiced smile.
Emrys Murray (MC)
I-I like you.
Emrys stammered, holding out the box.
Emrys Murray (MC)
I've liked you for a while now. I know I'm not perfect but - would you go out with me?
For a moment, silence. People nearby quieted, heads turning.
Then she laughed. A sharp, cruel thing.
Seraphina Lane.
You? (scoff) You seriously thought you had a chance with me?
Her words cut like knives. Emrys's face burned.
Seraphina Lane.
I like someone else, Emrys.(snap) Someone way out of your league.
The students around them began whispering. Emrys's stomach twisted, but before he could respond, someone else entered the scene.
Tall, gorgeous, flawless in every way - the kind of guy Emrys hated on principle.
Seraphina's face lit up immediately. She hurried over to him, completely ignoring the stunned Emrys.
She said sweetly, her voice suddenly soft.
Seraphina Lane.
I - I like you. I've liked you for so long.
Desmond raised an unimpressed brow, casually glancing at her, then at the watching crowd.
Desmond Everhart (ML)
Not interested.
He said, voice cold and careless.
Gasp. Some students chuckled.
Seraphina's face crumbled, her eyes brimming with embarrassed tears. She looked around, desperate to salvage her pride - and her gaze landed on Emrys.
Seraphina Lane.
This is all your fault!
She snapped, pointing at him like a villain in a soap opera.
Seraphina Lane.
You probably jinxed me, showing up like a stalker right before I confessed!
Emrys Murray (MC)
(blink, shock) Wait - what? I didn't - I was just -
Desmond's eyes flicked between them, then smirked, stepping closer.
Desmond Everhart (ML)
Pathetic. Didn't know someone like you had the balls to confess. Must have been desperate, huh?
Laughter rippled through the crowd.
The humiliation hit like a tidal wave. Emrys's throat tightened, his eyes stinging, and he bolted - the echo of cruel laughter and smug voices trailing behind him.

The campus cafe buzzed with chatter and clinking cups, but at one corner table, the mood was dark and heavy.
Emrys sat slumped over the table, face buried in his folded arms, his drink untouched. His messy hair covered most of his flushed face, but anyone could tell he was fighting tears - or had already lost.
Across from him sat Teresa, arms crossed, eyes practically burning holes through the wall.

That bitch.
She hissed, stabbing a fork into her slice of cake like it was Seraphina's heart.

I swear to god, if I ever see her alone in the girl's bathroom-
Cillian Davis (MC's friend)
Violence isn't the answer.
Murmured Cillian, their other friend, sliding a milk tea in front of Emrys.

Here, drink something sweet. It helps.
Emrys Murray (MC)
I'm fine. (mubled from behind his arms, voice thick)
Teresa Elliot (MC's friend)
No you're not! (snapped) You got humiliated in front of half the damn campus, Emrys!

And then she had the nerve to blame you for her own rejection. That Desmond bastard didn't have to kick you while you were down either.
Emrys Murray (MC)
Forget it.
He muttered, his chest still tight, vision blurry every time he thought about it.
Just then, the worst timing imaginable- Desmond strolled into the cafe, casual and flawless as always, a smirk playing on his lips, flanked by his best friend Xavier, who looked like he was already regretting being there.
As soon as Desmond's gaze landed on the slumped Emrys, that cocky grin widened.

Well, well, look who's still crying over a girl.
He drawled loud enough for the whole section to hear.
Teresa Elliot (MC's friend)
Say that again, asshole-
Desmond Everhart (ML)
Didn't know you were such a softie, Emry~
He teased, leaning one arm against their table, smug as hell.
Desmond Everhart (ML)
Bet you went home and cried into your pillow last night, huh? Want me to buy you a tissue box?
Emrys Murray (MC)
(head shot up, eyes red but blazing fire) At least I don't get my ego bruised rejecting desperate girls in public because I can't handle the attention.
He shot back, voice sharp.
Emrys Murray (MC)
Or is that how you get off, Mr. Perfect?
"Ooohhh", a few nearby students murmured, sensing drama.
Desmond's smirk faltered for a second before sharpening again.
Desmond Everhart (ML)
Careful, crybaby. Wouldn't want to embarrass yourself again, would you?
Xavier Victors (ML's friend)
Desmond.
Xavier cut in, grabbing his shoulder.
Xavier Victors (ML's friend)
That's enough, man. Let's go.
Desmond rolled his eyes but didn't resist, letting Xavier steer him away.
Desmond Everhart (ML)
See you around, princess.
He tossed over his shoulder at Emrys with a wink.
As they left, Teresa flipped him off.

What a dick. God, Emrys, you seriously need to kick his ass one day.

Emrys muttered, slumping back over the table.
