They Made Me Who I Am Part 1
Episode 1
Dita
What A Day!
I finally got my first excellent score in English—my very first midterm! After all the disbelief and hate from classmates, just because I’m the “poor new girl from nowhere,” I proved them wrong.
Even though I had to hear Dodi say, "How could she? She should be on the street, not here!" —one of the top students at school came up to me and said, “Don’t listen to that jerk, Dodi. Congrats! you really earned it.”
Dita goes back home to get changed and goes to the food stall right away
Dita
Mama, I got 99! That's an excellent score!
Mom
Good job, Babygirl! I knew you could do that! Thank you for making my dreams come true, I wanted to master The English Language so bad, yet I didn't even understand the lesson. "Yes", "no", "thank you" were the only words I know. Lol~
Dita
Even tho it's just a test, I'll try my best till the end, Ma. No worries. Lol. I know you signed me up to English courses everywhere we moved because you didn't get the chance when you were my age. I won't forget that, Ma.
Mom
How was your day at school btw?
Dita
As usual, not a day goes by without him mocking me!
Even after I got an excellent score, he still threw harsh words at me.
Well, he’s probably just jealous—he can’t even score a 70! Lol.
But you know what?
One of the top students at school congratulated me and told me not to listen to that jerk, Dodi. Lol.
Mom
Ofc! When you can't do it yourself, all that's left is jealousy. Lol. Indeed, leave it behind. This is your last year anyway. All the awards you've earned and the excellent test score will get you to college and a bright future! Have you asked your counselor about getting to University A through academic and non-academic achievements?
Dita
Yesss, Ma. We’re going to submit all the required admission documents next month. I can't wait! Btw, I heard Aunt Linda and Uncle Tom said to you, I should be mad thinking I will be accepted in University A and suggest you to convince me to continue your business instead.
Mom
Let them underestimate us and look down on us.
No matter what they say, I believe in you.
I know you won’t let yourself end up like me—still selling street food just to survive.
It’s hard work.
Waking up before sunrise, going to the market for ingredients,
cleaning, cooking, marinating, selling—
and then cleaning everything all over again.
I sent you to school, and now college,
because I want a better life for both of us.
Dita
Thanks, Ma. I won't disappoint you~
They keep selling street food until midnight.
Luckily, everything sold out.
They grab a quick dinner on the way home and go straight to bed.
Episode 2
As Dita gets ready to start college, her mom thinks it would be better to rent a small shop with a little room in the back—so they can live there and sell street food right out front.
So, she and Dita visit her sister, who, along with her husband, works at a multinational company with a high salary.
However, because of their own daughter Tita’s expenses, they could only afford to lend half of the rent.
Dita
Don’t worry, Ma. I’m thinking of starting to sell at school tomorrow.
I’ll go from class to class during recess.
I’m sure we’ll save up faster this way!
Mom
No, no, no! You need to study hard and stay focused.
Selling will only distract and exhaust you.
I can handle it, don’t worry!
Dita
Ma, it’s just you and me.
We have to work as a team—for both of us, a better life. Besides, I will do it only during recess. I promise it won't affect my studies.
Mom
Allright, but don't push yourself too hard
The next morning, Dita brings her food to school to sell.
Queen
Ew, what’s that awful smell?
If you eat that, you’ll end up in the hospital for sure.
It’s disgusting!
Dito
Ugh, I didn’t realize we had someone this poor in our class.
Queen, spray your perfume!
Dita
If you don’t want to, fine—but get the hell out of my way.
Dita is way too fed up but doesn’t want to waste her energy.
She decides to go to other classes to sell her food.
One of the top student notices that from distance.
Dita
Finally! I can’t believe it’s all sold out.
I’ll have to bring more tomorrow so we can save up faster.
The bell rang—school’s over. From a distance, Queen whispers something to Dito.
Dita goes to the food stall right away
Dita
Ma, It's all sold out~
Mom
Wow, good job, Babygirl! Thank you
Dita
Ma, please lol. Btw, I think it's better to bring more tomorrow!
Mom
Okay lol~
How's your day at school?
Dita
It's all great, Ma. As usual Dito and Queen. But, it doesn't matter. Idon't care. Lol
Mom
Nothing to worry then. I'll pack up, all is sold out too here. Wecan go back earlier.
They have dinner on their way back home and get to bed right away as usual
Episode 3
When recess starts, Dita heads to other classes first to sell her food.
About 80% of her food sold out
When she gets back to her class, someone shouts and points at her.
Canteen lady
Ah, so you’re the one trying to steal our customers! How dare you! You have no right to sell food here!
Out of nowhere, the canteen lady shouted at Dita and stormed over to her. She even shoved her shoulder and glared at her angrily.
Everyone is shocked, but the three of them are sneering and smiling triumphantly.
Canteen lady
You know what? The only place to buy food here is the canteen—and only I have the right to sell! I was born and raised here. The school promised that the local native, which is me, would have the exclusive right to run the canteen!
She knocked over the box, sending all of Dita’s remaining snacks flying and scattering across the ground.
Dita
I didn’t open a canteen—I’m just selling some street food snacks. Besides, we have to be fair. If my food isn’t good, they won’t buy it again.
Canteen lady
I don’t care. If I see you selling here again tomorrow, I’ll make sure you regret it.
One of the top students is texting somebody and glaring at the canteen lady a bit before looking out the window
Right before the canteen lady corners Dita, the principal storms over
Principal
What is going on here! Why are there snacks scattered all over the floor?
The canteen lady is shocked and stuttering.
Canteen lady
Nnn... Nothing ma'am. I have just tripped and spilled the snacks. Nothing serious~
Dita
Liar! She knocked over all the snacks I was selling out of jealousy and fear of rival ma'am!
Principal
How dare you do that to our student? Do you want me to revoke your permission to run the canteen here?
Canteen lady
No ma'am! I am sorry I am really sorry and I assure you I won't do that again
While the canteen lady is genuinely afraid, Queen whispers to Dito.
Queen
How did the principal suddenly storm in? Does she have backup?
Dito
Impossible! She can barely afford anything. The principal must be on a daily patrol.
Dita squints her eyes, suspicious. This must be their doing.
While looking out the window, he tries so hard to hide his proud smile. He didn’t expect Dita to stand up for herself so bravely.
The canteen lady apologize to Dita
The principal then reassures her, saying not to worry and to inform her immediately if anything is bothering her, as she’s one of the top students here. She leaves the room while glancing a bit at him; one of the top students.
