1 | The Gala
The grand hall pulsed with soft golden light, casting a warm, opulent glow on the sea of silk gowns and polished tuxedos. Beneath the towering arches and centuries-old paintings, the room hummed with laughter, clinking glasses, and hushed whispers behind crystal chandeliers that hung like frozen waterfalls.
Round tables draped in ivory shimmer were arranged in elegant symmetry, each crowned with a centerpiece of deep red roses, like hearts laid bare. Guests moved gracefully, their smiles poised, their eyes sharp—predators dressed in civility. The air was scented with perfume and expensive wine, laced with something colder—expectation, perhaps, or judgment.
In the center of it all, beneath the watchful eyes of oil-painted saints and kings, stood a young man who did not belong. His smile, though practiced, didn’t quite reach his eyes. His shoulders, though straight, carried invisible weight. And as the music swelled and the world spun in glittering circles, he realized this wasn’t a celebration.
It was a performance.
And he was on display.
The double doors creaked open, barely loud enough to be heard over the soft clink of silver against porcelain, but enough for a few curious eyes to turn. Taehyung stepped in, balancing a silver tray in one hand, the other tugging his crisp uniform into place. He moved quietly, gracefully, like a shadow taught to smile.
The soft light from the chandeliers kissed his porcelain skin, his doe eyes wide and unreadable beneath the dark sweep of his lashes. Not only that, but he weaved through the tables like he belonged, but the tremble in his fingers betrayed him. His tray held champagne flutes—effervescent gold in crystal glass—and he offered them with a bowed head, his gaze never quite meeting theirs.
Some looked past him, barely noticing. Others looked too long.
"You're the Kim boy, aren't you?" one guest slurred, not even bothering to whisper.
Taehyung didn’t flinch. He offered a glass and a tight smile, the same way he always did. Polished. Silent. Invisible.
He wasn’t here to be seen.
He was here to serve.
But the night had other plans.
