Life System: Rise of Kael Riven

No Light No hope

Kael Riven sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his cracked phone screen in the dim light of his small, cluttered room. The smell of stale pizza and cheap energy drinks hung in the air, mixing with the bitterness of his growing frustration. His phone buzzed again, but when he checked, there were no new notifications—nothing but an empty inbox and his low battery warning.

He tossed the phone aside, letting it land on the mattress with a soft thud. Another day wasted. Another day he couldn’t afford the rent, couldn’t make progress on his university assignments, couldn’t even get a decent meal. His grades were slipping. His life was slipping. And there was no one to blame but himself.

A quick glance at his bank account revealed the inevitable: $0.00.

“Great. Just perfect,” Kael muttered to himself, rubbing his tired eyes. The weight of his failed dreams was becoming too heavy to bear, and he had no idea how much longer he could keep pretending everything was fine.

Then, as if by some strange twist of fate, his phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t just a notification from a social media app or an email. No, this time it was something… different. Something strange.

He sat up straighter, reaching for the phone as a peculiar message flashed across the screen:

LIFE SYSTEM: Welcome, Kael. Ready to begin your first task?

His heart skipped a beat. It wasn’t from any app he had installed. It wasn’t a scam either—this looked far too real. A soft glow surrounded the words, and the text seemed to pulse with life.

He blinked, rubbed his eyes again, and read the message a second time. “What kind of joke is this?” he muttered under his breath.

A timer appeared at the bottom of the screen, ticking down from 24 hours. Without any option to exit, the screen demanded his attention. His curiosity piqued, Kael reluctantly tapped the message.

Quest #1: Help a stranger in need.

“Help a stranger? What, like a charity event?” Kael scoffed. He was already tired of scams, and this seemed like another one. But for some reason, the task felt... different. Real.

A second notification appeared before he could dismiss it.

Quest updated: You have 6 hours to complete the task.

Kael’s pulse quickened. He hesitated for a moment, unsure if he should be skeptical or intrigued. “No harm in checking it out,” he muttered. He grabbed his jacket, already halfway out the door.

The streets of Granis City were just as chaotic as usual. The neon lights buzzed overhead, the constant hum of traffic, and the occasional shout of pedestrians made the air feel alive—yet somehow, it was still empty. He wandered aimlessly, hoping that whatever or whoever needed help would just magically show up.

And then, he saw her.

A little girl, maybe seven or eight, standing by the sidewalk, clutching a faded teddy bear. Her wide eyes scanned the crowd, but no one seemed to notice her. People walked past her without a second glance, their faces buried in their phones or their own world.

Kael frowned and approached cautiously. “Hey, you okay?”

The girl looked up, her face pale and anxious. She didn’t answer. She only nodded, though her eyes betrayed the fear she tried to hide. She gripped her teddy bear tightly, as if it were her only lifeline.

Something in Kael’s gut told him this wasn’t normal. This wasn’t a coincidence.

A new notification flashed on his screen:

Target Identified: Assist the girl.

Objective: Help her get home safely.

Bonus Reward if Completed Without Asking Her Name.

Kael raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t like he had a choice. He crouched down to her level. “Where’s your home?” he asked gently, trying not to scare her.

The girl hesitated, then pointed down the street. “Over there...”

Without another word, Kael extended his hand. The girl took it without a second thought. Together, they walked through the streets of Granis, silent but steady, navigating the maze of alleyways and side streets.

The further they went, the more Kael began to wonder what this was all about. Was this part of the app’s game? Was someone watching him?

Eventually, they reached an old building that looked run-down, its windows covered with thick curtains. The girl stopped at the door, looked up at him, and without saying a word, disappeared inside.

Kael stood there for a moment, confused, before his phone buzzed once more.

Quest Complete.

Reward: $50 deposited.

Bonus Reward Unlocked: +1 Charisma

New Ability: Minor Observation – You can slightly sense people’s intent.

He stared at the notification, his mouth dry. He had just helped a stranger—and now he had money, charisma, and... abilities? The whole thing felt like a dream, or worse, a trap.

But the money in his account was real.

His heart raced as he looked around. There was no one else nearby, no signs of anything unusual. Just another night in Granis.

But deep down, Kael knew something had changed.

The First mission

Granis City’s night air was thick—half smoke, half secrets. Kael stepped out into the street, hoodie pulled low, eyes sharp. The timer on the Life System app ticked away: 5 hours, 42 minutes left.

His heart was still pounding from what had just happened. The strange girl, the odd mission… the money he’d just earned.

Kael looked down at his phone. $50. Real money. But it didn’t make any sense. It was as if the system knew exactly what he needed—and gave it to him. He could feel the weight of the phone in his pocket, like a secret power waiting to be tapped.

As he walked, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone—or something—was watching him. He checked over his shoulder, but the streets of Granis were just as busy as ever. Cars zoomed past, people hustled to and from the clubs and bars, and the neon lights painted the dark sky in bright hues of blue and pink.

Kael adjusted the hoodie over his head, trying to blend into the crowd, but he couldn’t ignore the pull of the Life System. It was like a whisper in his mind, urging him to complete more tasks, to explore what was hidden behind this strange app.

“What’s next?” he muttered to himself, wishing he could shake off the uneasy feeling gnawing at him. What kind of game was this? And who was behind it?

His phone buzzed again, pulling him from his thoughts. The screen lit up with another quest:

Quest #2: Complete a challenge to test your abilities.

Objective: Win a bet at a local bar.

Bonus reward for beating a tough opponent.

Kael blinked. A bet? At a bar? This was getting weirder by the second. But the more he thought about it, the more the idea seemed like a good opportunity. He needed the money, and he needed to prove to himself that he could do more than just survive. He could thrive—if the Life System was right.

A local bar was just up the block, hidden in an alley where the neon lights flickered. Kael’s instincts told him this was the place. He pushed through the door, the heavy bass from the music inside vibrating against his chest. It was dark and noisy, but the air felt electric, charged with a raw energy Kael hadn’t felt in a long time.

He approached the counter, and the bartender—a muscular man with tattoos covering his arms—gave him a look. “You here for the game?” he asked, his voice gravelly.

Kael raised an eyebrow. “What game?”

“The one where people bet,” the bartender said, nodding toward a corner of the bar where a group of men sat around a table, laughing and talking in low voices. “You’re new, huh? You’ve got guts, though. Not many people come in here and challenge him.”

Kael followed the bartender’s gaze. A man sat at the table, his eyes locked onto a deck of cards. His aura was intimidating, like he owned the place. His clothes were expensive—tailored suit, sharp shoes. He had the look of someone who wasn’t just playing for fun; he was playing to win.

“Who’s that?” Kael asked.

“That’s Victor,” the bartender replied. “The one to beat if you want to make some serious cash. But be careful, kid. He’s not a man you want to mess with.”

Kael didn’t have time to hesitate. He had a mission. He was going to take the challenge, and he was going to win. “I’ll play,” he said, his voice steady.

The bartender smiled grimly. “You’ve got guts, kid. Let’s see if you’ve got the skill.”

He led Kael over to the table, where Victor was sitting with two other men. The atmosphere was tense as the cards were dealt. Kael took a seat, feeling the weight of the moment settle on his shoulders. This wasn’t just a game; this was his chance to prove something to himself.

The game began. It was poker—a game Kael had never played before but knew well enough to understand the basics. He kept his eyes focused, trying to read his opponents, but there was something off about Victor. His smile was too smooth, his eyes too calculating. It was like he was always three steps ahead, and Kael felt the pressure building.

He had to win.

Kael placed his bets carefully, watching Victor and the others closely. His mind raced with every decision. The Life System had promised him a bonus reward for beating this guy. Was this the moment the app had been preparing him for?

Finally, after what felt like hours, Kael made his move. Victor was bluffing—he could see it in his eyes. It was a risky play, but Kael pushed all in.

Victor’s eyes widened for a split second—just enough for Kael to catch the lie. He flipped his cards over with a grin.

Victor stared at his hand, defeated. He didn’t say a word as he stood up and walked away, leaving the table. Kael won.

The bartender clapped him on the back. “Looks like you’ve got some skills after all, kid. Here’s your winnings.”

The money was real—$200 in cash, plus the bonus from the Life System.

Kael’s phone buzzed again:

Quest Complete.

Reward: $200.

Bonus Reward Unlocked: +2 Confidence.

New Ability: Enhanced Perception – You can now analyze people’s behavior with greater clarity.

Kael felt his heart race. The power was real, and so was the danger.

End of Chapter 2

Watchers in the dark

Kael stepped out of the bar, pockets heavier but heart still racing. The night air felt colder now, like something unseen was closing in. The glowing screen of the Life System app was still active, showing a countdown:

Next Quest: Pending...

Processing... Please Wait.

He shoved his phone into his pocket, trying to calm the adrenaline rushing through his veins. I beat him, he thought. Victor, the city’s shark. And I walked out with 200 bucks and a new ability.

His mind circled back to the notification: Enhanced Perception. It was subtle, but Kael could already feel the difference. People's expressions, posture, even their voices—it was like he could read them more clearly. Like their masks were thinner now.

He turned into a quieter street, cutting through a shortcut on his way home. That’s when he felt it again—eyes on him. Not the normal city vibe of being watched. This was focused. Intense. Like a predator sizing up prey.

He stopped walking and turned sharply.

A man stood under the glow of a flickering streetlamp. He wore a long dark coat, a cigarette hanging from his lips. His posture was casual, but his eyes weren’t. They were locked onto Kael.

“You did well in there,” the man said, exhaling a stream of smoke. “Beating Victor isn’t easy.”

Kael’s body tensed. “Who are you?”

The man stepped closer, boots tapping the concrete. “Just a messenger. You’ve caught the interest of certain… people. The app, the missions—it’s not just a game, kid. It’s a system built to find potential. And you? You’re the newest candidate.”

Kael frowned. “Candidate for what?”

The man didn’t answer directly. Instead, he reached into his coat and tossed something. Kael caught it instinctively. It was a card—black, with silver writing.

> Welcome to Phase Two.

Survive. Learn. Rise.

On the back was a logo—a geometric eye encased in a triangle.

“What the hell is this?” Kael asked, flipping it over.

“An invitation,” the man said. “And a warning.”

Before Kael could respond, the man was gone—vanished into the shadows as if he was never there.

Kael’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He pulled it out to see a new screen:

Main Quest Unlocked: Rise Through the Ranks

You’ve entered Phase Two. Missions will now affect your world more directly.

New Function: Danger Rating – High

Kael stared at the screen. The background had changed. Instead of the clean blue it used to show, it was now a dark red—like a warning. A silent scream.

He slowly walked back to his apartment. He needed time to think, to breathe. But rest wouldn’t come easily tonight.

As he stepped inside and locked the door, another notification blinked:

> Side Quest Available:

Find out who the Watchers are.

Reward: Information. Risk: Unknown.

Kael dropped onto his bed, the city noise barely reaching his ears. The money was real. The power was real. And now the danger was real too.

He was in. Whether he wanted to be or not.
