Chapter 1: Awakening
The city pulsed with neon life, the sky a canvas of black ink lit only by artificial stars. Kazuki Hiragi, a 22-year-old university student, jolted upright in bed, drenched in cold sweat. The dream—the same one that had haunted him for weeks—left a ringing in his ears and a pounding in his chest. He saw visions of floating mountains, shimmering beasts, and a voice that was not his own whispering his name.
"Kazuki... awaken. The time has come."
He rubbed his temples, trying to shake the images from his mind, but they clung like fog. Something was changing. He could feel it.
The next day, whispers followed him through campus. People pointed. Murmured.
"Did you hear? Kazuki blacked out yesterday. Woke up and solved every problem the professor gave him."
"Like... perfectly. Not a single mistake."
His best friend, Yui Takashima, caught up with him near the science building. Her short brown hair bounced with each step.
"Kazuki! You okay? You were totally out of it yesterday."
He hesitated. "I... I don't know what's happening to me. I feel different. Like there's something inside me... waking up."
That afternoon, Kazuki took a shortcut through an alley. The air felt thick. Men in black suits appeared as if from nowhere, their eyes cold, their presence suffocating.
"Kazuki Hiragi," one said. "Come with us."
"Who are you?!" he demanded, backing away.
They lunged. Instinct took over. His hand rose, and with a sound like cracking thunder, a pulse of energy exploded from his palm. The men were thrown backwards like rag dolls.
Breathing hard, Kazuki stared at his hands. "What... was that?"
Elsewhere, in a dark facility, a man watched the footage. His face was obscured, but his voice was low and commanding.
"He’s awakened. Initiate the next phase."
That evening, Kazuki stood on a rooftop, staring out at the sprawling city. Lights flickered like stars below.
"What am I becoming?" he whispered.
A new world had opened before him. And he had no choice but to walk into it.
He thought back to the dream—the voice, the visions, and the feeling of being pulled toward something vast and powerful. It hadn't just been a dream. It was a calling. One he could no longer ignore. The questions that had haunted him his whole life—why he always felt out of place, why he could understand things faster than others—were finally beginning to make sense.
His phone buzzed again. Another message, this one even more cryptic: "Trust no one. Your gift is only the beginning."
Kazuki felt a shiver crawl up his spine. He wasn’t just different. He was dangerous. And if he didn’t figure out the truth soon, the people hunting him would make sure he never got the chance.
Somewhere deep inside, a spark had ignited. He didn’t know what he was capable of yet, but he was starting to realize that this was more than fate. It was a test. And failure wasn’t an option.

Chapter 2: Pursuit
sound of sirens echoed in the distance as Kazuki ran through the dimly lit streets. His breath came in ragged gasps, heart hammering against his ribs. The city was unfamiliar this late, shadows lengthening into twisted forms that seemed to follow him with every turn. It wasn’t just paranoia—someone was definitely chasing him.
He ducked into a narrow alley, pressed his back against the wall, and closed his eyes. For a moment, all he could hear was the rush of blood in his ears.
Then footsteps. Fast. Purposeful.
A figure turned the corner. Tall, hooded, with glowing blue eyes that pierced the darkness.
"You’re not safe here," the stranger said. "They know. They’re coming."
Kazuki tensed. "Who are you?"
"Renji Takeda," the man replied. "I’m like you. One of the Ascended. And if we don’t leave now, they’ll capture you."
Before Kazuki could respond, the alley behind them erupted in light. Black-suited agents, the same kind he fought before, poured into the space, weapons drawn.
Renji grabbed Kazuki’s arm. "No time! Focus your energy—push outward!"
"I-I don’t know how!"
"Then feel it! Let it move through you!"
Kazuki closed his eyes. Something deep inside him stirred, rising like a tide. A pulse, wild and electric. He opened his eyes—and the alley exploded with blinding light.
When the light faded, the agents were sprawled across the pavement, unconscious. Renji looked at Kazuki, his expression caught somewhere between shock and admiration.
"You really have no idea how powerful you are," he said. "That wasn’t just instinct—that was control."
Kazuki collapsed to one knee, gasping. "It felt... like something else was guiding me. Like a second mind inside me."
Renji nodded. "The Ascended don’t just awaken randomly. There’s a force—an intelligence—that binds us. We’re chosen, Kazuki. And you... you might be something more."
They moved quickly, weaving through alleys and empty streets until they reached a rusted door hidden behind an abandoned laundromat. Renji tapped a code into the keypad. It clicked open, revealing a dim stairwell.
"Where are we?" Kazuki asked, stepping inside.
"Safe house," Renji replied. "It’s not much, but it'll keep us hidden for now."
Inside, the space was small but stocked—maps, monitors, stacks of files. Renji pointed to a corkboard cluttered with photographs and red string.
"These are the people hunting us," he said. "A group called Aegis. They want to control the Ascended. Experiment on us. Kill us if we resist."
Kazuki swallowed hard. "So what now?"
Renji looked him dead in the eyes. "Now? We train. We fight back. And we find the others before Aegis does."
Kazuki nodded slowly. The fear still lingered, but it was joined now by something stronger—purpose.
Outside, a drone silently hovered, its lens fixed on the safe house’s window. Inside a control room, an agent spoke into a headset. "Target located. Awaiting confirmation."
Far from safety, the real battle was only beginning.
The next few days were a blur. Renji pushed Kazuki to his limits, training him in the use of his newfound abilities. At first, Kazuki struggled to control the energy—sometimes sparks would erupt unintentionally, or his powers would manifest in dangerous bursts. But slowly, with Renji’s guidance, he began to understand how to channel the power within him.
They trained in the basement of the safe house. Kazuki learned to manipulate energy into forms—blades, shields, pulses of force. He learned to read Renji’s movements, anticipate attacks, and strengthen his senses. With every session, the fear faded a little more.
"You’re adapting fast," Renji said one evening, tossing Kazuki a towel after a particularly intense sparring match. "Faster than anyone I’ve ever seen."
Kazuki wiped sweat from his brow. "Because I have to. If I stop moving forward... I die."
Renji looked at him with quiet approval. "That mindset will keep you alive. But it’s not just about survival. We’re fighting for the future of all Ascended. For freedom."
Just then, a monitor lit up. An alert flashed across the screen—motion detected in Sector 12.
Renji’s eyes narrowed. "They found another one."
Kazuki’s heart skipped. "Another Ascended?"
"If we can reach them first, we might stand a chance. But if Aegis gets there first..."
Renji didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t have to.
Kazuki stood, fists clenched. "Then let’s not waste time. We go tonight."

Chapter 3: Revelation
Kazuki sat in the passenger seat of an old, beat-up van, staring out the window as the city passed in streaks of light and shadow. Renji drove in silence, his fingers tight on the wheel, eyes scanning the road ahead. The tension between them was palpable, not from distrust, but from the weight of what lay ahead.
"This Ascended in Sector 12," Kazuki began, breaking the silence. "Do we know anything about them?"
Renji shook his head. "Not much. Only that they triggered a flare—same kind of energy spike you produced. It's rare. Aegis will have seen it too. We have to move fast."
Kazuki nodded. Every second counted.
They reached the outskirts of the industrial zone, where abandoned warehouses lined the streets like forgotten sentinels. Renji pulled the van into a shadowed alley and cut the engine. The silence was deafening.
"Keep your energy low," he said. "We don't want to alert Aegis."
Kazuki focused, breathing in, drawing his energy inward. He felt the pulsing hum settle in his core. Together, they stepped out and crept toward the warehouse marked on Renji's map.
The moment they entered, the air shifted. It was thick with static, like a storm on the verge of breaking.
"They're here," Kazuki whispered.
"Not just Aegis," Renji replied, his voice tight. "The Ascended. They're inside."
A crash echoed through the warehouse. They ducked behind a stack of crates, just in time to see a girl, no older than sixteen, levitating in mid-air. Her long silver hair shimmered as blue light spiraled from her fingers, holding back two Aegis agents suspended in a telekinetic grip.
"Let me go!" she screamed. "I won't be your experiment!"
One of the agents managed to break free and fired a stun round. The girl screamed as she was hit, falling from the air and crashing into the ground. The second agent advanced.
Kazuki didn't hesitate. He leapt from behind cover, launching a wave of energy that knocked both agents off their feet. Renji joined him in a flash, finishing them off with precise, bone-breaking strikes.
Kazuki rushed to the girl's side. Her eyes fluttered open, unfocused.
"You're... like me?" she gasped.
He nodded. "You're safe now."
They carried her to the van, Renji driving them back toward the safe house as Kazuki tended to her wounds. Her name was Aria.
At the safe house, once Aria regained full consciousness, she shared her story. Taken from her family by Aegis after her powers awakened, she'd been kept in a lab, studied like an animal. She escaped when her powers surged during a failed experiment.
Renji paced. "They're accelerating their plans. Aegis used to wait, watch. Now they're acting fast—aggressive."
Kazuki clenched his fists. "We need to do something. We can't just keep reacting."
Renji nodded. "You're right. It's time we stopped being prey."
Aria looked up. "There's something else... something they were looking for. A source. A relic. They think it amplifies Ascended powers."
Kazuki leaned in. "A relic? Where?"
"I don't know exactly. But I saw maps. Blueprints. Underground. Deep beneath the city. I think it's called the Core."
Renji exchanged a glance with Kazuki. "We've heard rumors. But no confirmation. If it's real... it could change everything."
"Or destroy everything," Kazuki added.
That night, sleep didn't come. Kazuki stood on the rooftop again, staring at the stars. A storm was coming, and he was at the center of it. Every instinct in him screamed that the Core was more than just a power source. It was tied to his awakening. To the dreams. To the voice.
And maybe... to the truth about what he really was.
The next morning, the team prepared. Renji stocked weapons, Aria fine-tuned her telekinesis, and Kazuki practiced projecting controlled bursts of power. They moved with purpose now, no longer hiding. Their mission was clear: find the Core before Aegis did.
But just as they were about to leave, the safe house's alarms blared.
"They're here!" Renji shouted.
The ground trembled as explosions rocked the building. Drones swooped in through broken windows. Aegis had found them.
Kazuki stood in front of Aria. "Get to the escape tunnel! Go!"
Renji covered them, energy blades flashing, cutting down drones with precision. Kazuki unleashed a wave of force that shattered the front door. Aegis agents stormed in, but Kazuki held the line, raw power erupting from his hands.
Aria screamed. Kazuki turned in time to see a cloaked figure appear behind her—an Aegis elite.
"Kazuki!" she cried.
He teleported without thinking, slamming into the elite with a shockwave that cracked the walls. The elite recovered fast, landing a brutal blow to Kazuki's side. Pain bloomed in his ribs.
"You're not ready," the elite sneered.
"Maybe not," Kazuki spat blood, "but I don't fight alone."
Renji appeared behind the elite, striking hard. The two of them pushed the enemy back, forcing him into retreat.
"We have to go!" Renji yelled.
Together, they dove into the tunnel, the safe house collapsing behind them.
Their sanctuary was gone. But the mission remained. The Core had to be found.
And Kazuki had never been more certain: he was more than an Ascended. He was the key to unlocking something ancient, powerful—and dangerous.
