Whispers of Vengeance

Prologue: THE BEGINNING OF THE END

Cassian’s POV:

Revenge is a patient man’s game.

I had spent years perfecting my plan—waiting for the right moment, for the right move. Every step was calculated, every piece of the puzzle meticulously placed. And at the center of it all stood one name.

Devereaux.

The family that destroyed mine.

The name that fueled my nightmares, that haunted my every waking thought. I had sworn to erase them, to make them suffer as I had. And now, after years of silence, the perfect opportunity had landed in my hands.

Evelina Devereaux.

She had no idea who I was. No idea that the blood in her veins was the reason my world had been torn apart.

She was nothing more than a pawn in this game. A means to an end.

Or at least, that’s what I told myself.

Until I saw her.

Until I realized that hatred and obsession were two sides of the same coin.

And now, for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to ruin her.

Or ruin myself in the process.

---

Evelina’s POV

My life was ordinary. At least, I thought it was.

College classes, late-night study sessions, coffee dates with my best friend—everything followed a predictable rhythm. Safe. Normal.

Until him.

Cassian Moretti.

The first time I saw him, I felt it. That strange, electric pull, the quiet warning in my gut telling me he was dangerous. But danger had always been a distant thing, something that happened to other people.

Not me.

But then he spoke my name like he had known me forever. Like he had been waiting for this moment.

And suddenly, I wasn’t safe anymore.

There was something in his eyes—dark, unreadable, suffocating. A storm on the horizon, waiting to consume me whole.

I should have run.

But I didn’t.

Because even though my mind told me to stay away, my heart whispered a different truth.

That Cassian Moretti wasn’t just my downfall.

He was my fate.

Episode 1: THE BEGINNING OF THE END

Evelina’s POV..

Some nights feel heavier than others—tonight was one of them.

The air was crisp, a biting chill wrapping around me as I walked across the dimly lit parking lot. The university campus was quiet, an unusual hush settling over it. I had stayed too late at the library again, caught up in notes and textbooks, unaware of time slipping by.

Now, an unsettling feeling crawled up my spine.

I quickened my pace, my breath visible in the cold night air. My car was parked near the edge of the lot, away from the brighter streetlights. Usually, it didn’t bother me. I had walked this path countless times before.

But tonight felt different.

It wasn’t just the quiet—it was the way the air felt thick with something unseen.

You’re being paranoid, Eve.

Shaking off the thought, I reached into my bag, fingers searching for my keys.

Then I heard it.

A footstep.

Soft. Measured.

Too close.

I froze, every muscle in my body tensing.

My heart pounded against my ribs as I turned my head slightly, scanning the shadows. The dim glow of the streetlights barely touched the edges of the parking lot. From where I stood, everything past the first row of cars was drowned in darkness.

Maybe it was just my imagination.

I forced myself to keep moving, fingers gripping my keys tightly. My car was just a few steps away. I could see the reflection of my pale face in the window, the tension in my features unmistakable.

I reached for the door handle—

But before I could open it, an arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me back with terrifying strength.

A gloved hand clamped over my mouth, muffling my scream.

Panic surged through me, wild and uncontrollable. I thrashed, kicking out with every ounce of strength, but my captor was unfazed. His grip tightened, his chest pressed against my back.

“Shh, dolcezza.”

The voice was deep, smooth, and dangerously calm.

I went rigid.

I knew that voice.

Cassian Moretti.

A name spoken in whispers, laced with fear.

I had never met him before, but I knew who he was. Everyone did.

The Moretti family was infamous—powerful, untouchable, dangerous. And Cassian was their heir, rumored to be colder than his father, deadlier in every way.

And now, he had me in his grasp.

I sucked in a shaky breath through my nose, my mind racing. I needed to get out of this.

I shifted my weight slightly before slamming my elbow into his ribs, putting all my strength behind the hit.

He barely flinched.

Instead, he let out a quiet, amused chuckle, his grip on me unwavering.

“You’re stronger than you look,” he murmured. “I like that.”

I tried again, twisting in his grasp, but it was useless. He was stronger, faster, completely in control.

“What do you want?” I demanded, my voice muffled against his hand.

Slowly, his fingers loosened, slipping away from my mouth. But he didn’t let me go. His other arm remained around my waist, his grip firm yet oddly restrained.

“I think you already know,” he said.

I turned my head slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of him. The dim light cast shadows across his sharp features—dark eyes, unreadable and intense, framed by hair just long enough to fall across his forehead.

I had seen photos of him before, but they didn’t do him justice.

He was breathtaking in the most terrifying way.

And he was looking at me like I was something he had already claimed.

A slow shiver ran through me.

“I don’t know anything,” I whispered.

His gaze darkened, the weight of it making my pulse quicken.

“Then it’s time you learn.”

His hold on me shifted—gentler, but no less unyielding. He wasn’t going to hurt me. At least, not in the way I had feared.

But this wasn’t just some random attack.

This was personal.

I just didn’t know why.

Yet.

Episode 2:A CAGED BIRD

Evelina’s POV:

My heart pounded so loudly it nearly drowned out the silence between us.

Cassian Moretti still had me locked in his grasp—one arm around my waist, his chest pressed firmly against my back. The scent of his cologne, dark and expensive, curled around me, making it harder to think.

I should have been screaming. Fighting harder. Doing something other than standing there, frozen under the weight of his presence.

But the way he held me wasn’t brutal. He wasn’t hurting me.

And that terrified me more than anything else.

I forced myself to breathe. “You can’t just—just grab people off the street,” I snapped, my voice sharper than I felt. “Let me go.”

Cassian exhaled, the sound almost amused. “And if I don’t?”

A slow, creeping dread unfurled in my chest.

I swallowed hard. “Then I’ll make you regret it.”

A low chuckle rumbled in his throat, dark and rich like smoke curling through the air. “Brave.”

His grip loosened slightly, but not enough for me to escape.

I glanced around the parking lot, searching for anyone—anyone—who could see us. But the streetlights barely reached this far, and the campus was empty at this hour.

No one was coming to help me.

I needed to help myself.

I tensed, preparing to jerk away, but Cassian seemed to sense it before I could move. His fingers curled slightly around my wrist. Not a painful hold, but firm.

“Get in the car, Evelina,” he murmured.

His voice was velvet, soft yet commanding. A voice people listened to.

But I wasn’t just anyone.

I lifted my chin, forcing confidence into my tone. “Not happening.”

Cassian tilted his head, his dark eyes scanning my face like he was searching for something. “You sure?”

The way he said it—low, edged with quiet amusement—made my skin prickle.

“Positive,” I said.

A beat of silence stretched between us.

Then, to my shock, he took a step back.

“Walk away, then.”

I blinked. “What?”

His lips curled slightly. “Go.” He gestured toward the parking lot’s exit. “You’re free to leave.”

I stared at him, waiting for the catch.

There had to be one.

Cassian Moretti didn’t just let people go.

This was a man who played with power like it was an art form. He didn’t act without purpose. And yet, here he was, telling me I could walk away.

My legs refused to move.

He noticed.

His smirk deepened. “Interesting.”

Frustration flared in me. He was playing mind games, and I hated it.

With a sharp breath, I turned on my heel, forcing myself to move.

One step.

Two.

Three.

But then—

I stopped.

Because deep down, I knew.

Cassian Moretti wasn’t here by accident. He had sought me out for a reason. And the most terrifying part?

I wanted to know why.

Slowly, I turned back to face him. He was still there, standing casually with his hands in his pockets, watching me like he had already won.

“Why me?” I demanded.

Cassian didn’t answer right away. Instead, he took a slow step forward. Then another.

Despite everything, I didn’t move away.

When he stopped just a breath away, I had to tilt my head up to meet his gaze.

Something flickered in his dark eyes.

“Because, dolcezza,” he murmured, voice dangerously soft.

“You’re part of something you don’t even realize.”

The words sent a shiver through me.

“What the hell does that mean?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Cassian studied me, as if debating how much to tell me.

Then, with maddening ease, he stepped back, slipping his hands into his pockets. “You’ll figure it out soon enough.”

My fingers clenched. “You can’t just show up, grab me, and throw cryptic riddles at me.”

His lips quirked in amusement. “I can. And I did.”

I exhaled sharply. Infuriating man.

“If you have something to say, say it,” I challenged.

Cassian’s gaze darkened, his amusement fading into something heavier.

“I don’t have to say it, dolcezza.” He leaned in slightly, his voice a whisper against my skin.

“You’re already feeling it, aren’t you?”

A chill ran through me—not from fear, but from something far more dangerous.

Something I didn’t want to name.

Something I refused to acknowledge.

I forced my expression into something unreadable. “Stay away from me.”

Cassian didn’t look remotely bothered. If anything, he looked entertained.

“You know that’s not going to happen.”

Then, before I could react, he took a step back, giving me space for the first time since this nightmare began.

It felt like a test. A challenge.

And I had no idea if I had passed or failed.

“Goodnight, Evelina,” he murmured, his voice lingering in the cold night air.

Then, just like that—

He turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows.

And I was left standing there, my pulse racing, my mind spinning.

Because something told me this was only the beginning.

And whatever game Cassian Moretti was playing…

I was already trapped in it.
