Awakening in a World Unknown

Darkness.

That was the last thing she remembered—cold, suffocating darkness.

The screech of tires. The blinding glare of headlights. The deafening crunch of metal against metal. The sharp sting of shattered glass cutting into her skin.

She had been walking home from the bookstore, a fresh copy of A Dance of Spells tucked under her arm. It had been raining, the streets slick with water, the distant hum of traffic nothing more than background noise.

Then—lights.

Too close. Too fast.

She had turned, heart lurching into her throat. The roar of an engine. A shout. The overwhelming impact as her body was thrown like a ragdoll, the ground rushing up to meet her. Pain exploded through her skull, a white-hot agony that swallowed everything.

And then… nothing.

Now, she was awake.

But she wasn’t in a hospital.

A soft murmur of voices drifted around her, unfamiliar yet oddly soothing. The air smelled of lavender and morning dew, a stark contrast to the sterile antiseptic she had expected.

She blinked.

A canopy of white silk stretched above her, embroidered with silver constellations. This… this wasn’t right.

Her fingers curled around the sheets beneath her—soft velvet, far too luxurious for an ordinary bed. Panic stirred in her chest, coiling tighter with every breath.

Slowly, she pushed herself up, but the unfamiliar weight of her body made her movements sluggish. A strange sensation prickled over her skin—delicate, refined fingers, paler than she remembered. As strands of lavender hair slipped over her shoulder, her breath caught.

Her hands. Her hair.

This… this wasn’t her body.

A cold, twisting dread sank its claws into her.

She threw the blankets aside and stumbled to her feet, the wooden floor cool beneath her bare soles. Her legs trembled as she forced herself toward the gilded mirror in the corner of the grand chamber.

The reflection staring back was not her own.

Lavender hair. Silver eyes. A face she recognized but had never worn.

She knew this face.

Astrid Solenne Wyntera.

The female lead of A Dance of Spells.

Her mind reeled. This wasn’t possible. She had only read the introduction of the novel before—before the accident.

She had died.

Hadn’t she?

Her fingers touched the mirror, the glass cool beneath her trembling fingertips. This wasn’t a dream. The rapid thud of her heart, the ache in her muscles, the weight of the silky nightgown against her skin—everything felt real.

A sudden knock at the door made her jolt.

“My Lady!”

The voice was unfamiliar, yet something about it sent a wave of unease through her.

The door swung open, and a young woman stepped inside. She had golden eyes and neatly braided brown hair, her uniform crisp and elegant.

The maid gasped, her hand flying to her chest. “You’ve awakened!”

Astrid—no, she—took a step back. The maid’s face was filled with concern, but she felt only confusion and fear.

“You collapsed two days ago,” the maid continued hesitantly. “The entire household has been worried.”

Two days.

Her mind spun. Had she replaced the real Astrid? Or had the original simply ceased to exist?

The maid’s eyes searched her face. “My lady, are you… feeling well?”

She swallowed hard.

“I…” she faltered.

Who was she supposed to be? She had no idea how Astrid spoke, how she carried herself, how she interacted with the people around her.

A safe answer.

“I don’t remember.”

The maid’s eyes widened. “You… don’t remember?”

She shook her head, stepping away from the mirror as if it would shatter her fragile grasp on reality. “I don’t know where I am… or who you are.”

The maid’s face paled.

“Wait here,” she whispered before rushing out of the room.

Panic flared in her chest. Did I make a mistake?

Before she could think, another voice cut through the air.

“Astrid?”

The room fell deathly silent.

A tall figure stood in the doorway, exuding quiet authority. His silver hair gleamed under the candlelight, his piercing golden eyes locked onto her with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

Duke Aldric Wyntera.

Her father.

A man who wielded time itself.

His gaze was unreadable as he stepped forward. “You collapsed without warning. The healers could not determine the cause.”

She forced herself to meet his gaze. Don’t show fear.

“I… don’t remember,” she admitted quietly.

Silence.

His expression didn’t change.

“What do you mean?”

She swallowed. “I don’t remember anything. Not this room, not her…” She gestured toward the maid, who stood frozen near the door. “Not you.”

A flicker of something—something sharp—crossed his golden eyes.

The air in the room grew heavier, as if the very fabric of time shifted under his will.

Her chest tightened. Was this it? Had she already doomed herself?

Then, after what felt like an eternity, he spoke.

“I see.”

No emotion. No anger. Just those two words.

Her fingers curled into the fabric of her nightgown. He doesn’t believe me.

“Rest,” he ordered. “We will speak more later.”

Without another word, he turned and left.

The tension in her body didn’t ease.

Her father—no, Astrid’s father—was not a man easily deceived. If she had only read the introduction of the book, she had no idea what kind of person he truly was.

She sat on the edge of the bed, her pulse hammering.

She had woken up in a world she barely knew, in a body that wasn’t hers, with no knowledge of what lay ahead.

And yet, she had no choice but to survive.
