IN THE WOODS

ENDLESS WHISPERING

The village of new zealand lay at the edge of a vast, uncharted forest, one that even the most adventurous souls dared not enter. The trees were ancient, their trunks twisted in shapes that seemed to defy the natural world, and their dense canopy hid the sky, casting everything beneath it in perpetual shadow. Only a few dared to live near its border, and they did so with unease, for the forest held a secret, one that was whispered about in hushed tones but never spoken of openly.

Jessica, a young woman had heard the rumors upon arriving. The villagers spoke of strange lights that flickered between the trees at night, of strange sounds that seemed to come from the woods but had no clear source. They said the forest was alive in ways that no one could understand. Some even claimed that it had a mind of its own, that it could call to people, beckoning them deep into its dark heart. And those who went in—well, they were never the same.

Curiosity gnawed at Jessica. Having always been intrigued by the unknown, she couldn't shake the pull the forest seemed to have on her. It was as if something inside her knew that she had a part to play in its mystery.

One evening, when the air was thick with fog, and the village seemed more silent than usual, Jessica ventured out. The dim light of the lantern flickered in her hand, casting eerie shadows on the path. She was alone, though she’d told no one of her plan. Her breath quickened as she stepped past the boundary, where the forest’s dense canopy swallowed the last remnants of twilight.

The moment she crossed into the forest, the temperature seemed to drop, and an unsettling quiet descended. The usual sounds of wildlife—crickets chirping, the rustle of leaves—were gone. Instead, there was a strange hum, like a whisper carried on the wind, though she couldn’t tell where it came from.

She continued, guided only by the weak light of her lantern. The trees, gnarled and twisted, leaned inward, their branches clawing at the air like skeletal hands. The path was barely visible beneath her feet, and yet she walked on, drawn deeper into the darkness. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the very ground itself was reluctant to let her pass.

Suddenly, the air shifted. The temperature dropped even further, and Jessica could see her breath mist in front of her. The whispering grew louder, though she couldn’t understand the words—only that they were unmistakably directed at her. She turned her head, sensing a presence, but saw nothing but the endless expanse of trees.

Then, as if on cue, the forest opened up before her, revealing a clearing. The trees that surrounded it were taller than any she had ever seen, their trunks covered in thick moss that glowed faintly in the dark. In the center of the clearing stood a stone structure—ancient, half-buried in the earth, with intricate carvings that seemed to pulse with a life of their own.

Jessica’s heart pounded as she approached, her lantern shaking in her hand. The stone felt cold, unnaturally so, and the air around it buzzed with an energy she couldn’t explain. As she reached out to touch it, the whispers grew louder, clearer now. They were words, old words, spoken in a language long forgotten.

“She has come,” the voices murmured in unison.

Jessica pulled her hand back, the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. She took a step back, but something urged her to stay, to uncover the truth of what lay before her.

Suddenly, a shadow moved within the trees—too fast to be a person, too unnatural to be an animal. Her heart skipped a beat as the shadow flickered in and out of view, never fully revealing itself. The whispers were now frantic, growing louder, more insistent. It was as if the forest itself were calling her name.

Without thinking, Jessica stepped forward, her lantern now casting an eerie glow over the stone structure. The moment her foot crossed the threshold of the clearing, the air around her seemed to crackle, and the world seemed to shift. The trees groaned, their branches reaching out toward her, as though trying to draw her into their embrace.

Before she could react, the ground beneath her feet began to tremble. The stone structure began to shift, the carvings glowing brighter, and a low, rumbling sound filled the air. In the center of the clearing, the ground cracked open, revealing a dark abyss. From within it, an old, rusted door creaked open, and something—something ancient—stirred within.

The whispers had stopped, replaced now by a chilling silence that seemed to stretch for miles. jessica’s instincts screamed at her to run, but her body refused to move. Instead, she found herself staring into the abyss, the pull of it irresistible.

And then, from the darkness, a figure emerged.

It was like nothing Jessica had ever seen—human, but not human. Its face was obscured by a veil of shadows, but its eyes glowed with an unearthly light, ancient and knowing. It spoke, though its voice seemed to reverberate inside her mind rather than through the air.

"You have come. And now, you will understand."

The figure’s words were like a key unlocking something deep within her. Suddenly, memories that were not her own began to flood her mind—visions of the forest in its prime, of the people who had once lived in this place, and of a curse that had bound the forest to the earth for centuries. The trees, the stones, the very air around her—they were all part of something far older, far darker than she could comprehend.

But even as the truth began to unfold, Jessica realized something else—the forest was not just alive. It was aware. And it had been waiting for her.

With a shock, she understood that she had been chosen. Not for any good reason, but because the forest needed her. The voices, the whispers, the strange pull—it was all part of a plan that had been set in motion long before her birth.

Jessica’s vision blurred, her body trembling as she realized that she had crossed a line from which there was no return.

The last thing she saw before everything went dark was the figure’s glowing eyes, now full of something—something that could only be described as satisfaction.

And then, there was nothing but the endless whispering.
