It was a bright morning on the bustling college campus, the air thick with the energy of students moving between classes, catching up with friends, or rushing to their next lecture.
Sophia pulled out her phone, her eyes skimming through the notifications as she walked through one of the long, crowded corridors.
She had just entered the college, still familiarizing herself with the place, and was checking her schedule for the day.
Her focus was completely absorbed in the screen as she tapped away, unaware of the world around her.
The sound of students chatting, lockers slamming, and footsteps echoed off the walls of the corridor.
Just as Sophia turned the corner, still engrossed in her phone, she faintly registered a distant voice calling out,
"Hey, watch out!"
Startled, she glanced up just in time to see a blur of movement coming straight toward her.
Before she could react, a body collided with hers, sending her stumbling backward, the impact throwing her off balance.
She fell hard onto the cold floor with a gasp, her phone flying out of her hand.
A figure hovered over her, and she quickly realized it was a guy—tall, athletic, and unmistakably caught off guard.
For a moment, time seemed to slow as Ethan—the guy who had just crashed into her—froze, his eyes locked on hers.
He had been skating down the corridor, carefree as ever, but the moment he saw Sophia, something clicked inside him.
Her wide eyes stared up at him in confusion, her expression a mix of surprise and growing anger.
But all Ethan could do was whisper, almost to himself, “Beautiful…”
Sophia blinked, her shock quickly morphing into irritation. She pushed him off with more force than necessary, sitting up and brushing herself off.
“Are you serious?” she snapped, glaring up at him. “You were skating in the corridors? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?”
Ethan blinked, still a little dazed, not from the fall, but from her presence. He quickly straightened himself and opened his mouth to respond, but before he could, a loud voice called out,
“Oh my god, that was amazing!”
Hannah, one of Ethan's best friends, bounded toward them, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Ethan, your skating skills are unreal! That was seriously impressive." She glanced down at Sophia sprawled on the floor and, with a sheepish grin, added,
"Oops… though, uh, maybe not the best timing."
Tyler, Ethan’s other close friend, wasn’t as amused. He reached out to help Sophia up, offering her a concerned look. “You okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
Sophia, now standing and brushing off her clothes, frowned. “I’m fine, but I could’ve seriously gotten hurt!”
Tyler glanced back at Ethan, giving him a nudge. "Dude, you need to apologize. That was reckless."
Ethan scratched the back of his head, a sheepish smile spreading across his face. “Yeah, uh, I’m really sorry about that. I wasn’t paying attention, and—”
Before he could finish, Liam, Sophia’s calm and protective friend, appeared by her side. His sharp eyes immediately scanned her from head to toe.
“Sophia, are you sure you’re okay? You don’t look hurt, but that fall didn’t look soft.”
Sophia nodded, still glaring at Ethan, but her anger was starting to simmer down. “I’m fine, really. Just... irritated.”
That’s when Olivia, ever the firecracker, cut in with a wide grin. “I mean, he fell for you quite literally, didn’t he? How romantic in the weirdest way!”
Sophia shot her a look that could kill, but before she could respond, Olivia stormed up to Ethan with her fists balled at her sides.
"What were you thinking?" she demanded. "Skating in a crowded hallway? Do you even care if you hurt someone?"
Olivia stepped forward to defend her friend, her face set with determination, but Tyler quickly intervened, stepping in between them.
"Hold on, hold on," he said, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. "Look, we’re all sorry for what happened. Ethan didn’t mean any harm, and I think we can all agree that this was just an accident."
Olivia glared up at him, clearly not convinced. "Accident or not, your friend needs to watch where he's going."
Ethan, still trying to process what had just happened, finally found his voice. "I'm really sorry, okay? I was being stupid. I’ll be more careful next time."
Sophia’s anger began to melt away, though she still felt embarrassed from the fall and irritated by Ethan’s recklessness.
She glanced at him briefly, noticing how sincere his apology sounded, even though he looked like the type to not take anything too seriously.
“Just... don’t let it happen again.”
There was a brief, awkward silence before Hannah, ever the playful instigator, nudged Ethan and whispered loudly, “You know, you could try asking for her name instead of falling all over her.”
Ethan's ears turned pink, but before he could respond, Sophia quickly gathered herself, gesturing to her friends. “Let’s go. We’ve got class.”
Liam nodded, placing a gentle hand on Sophia’s shoulder, guiding her away from the group. "C’mon, let’s get out of here before something else happens."
Sophia cast one last glance over her shoulder, still feeling the frustration bubbling within her.
But as she looked at Ethan, she couldn’t quite shake the feeling that this wasn’t the last time they’d cross paths.
