The Freakish Fables

Cold

I sat there, all alone, shuddering in the restless cold. The icy tendrils of winter wrapped around my body exposing every part of my skin, pulling it into the depths of a void, farther and farther, and deeper and deeper I go. My father won't be back for who knows how long, the storm raged on for what seemed like hours. My mind dragged on as I felt the hunger gnawing at my gut. I needed to get wood to rekindle the fire but my feet could barely move let alone my toes. The cold was creeping into the cabin leaving only the little bit of fire and my body to resist the everlasting chill. I had to get up though, I didn't want to die like this knowing that I was too weak to even try. Still, my body was so tired and I felt even more unstable than before. I closed my eyes.

I open them and begin to stand when I hear a whispering behind my ear. I dismiss it as the wind and move forward slowly. I sense something watching me, the gaze of a vast entity maybe more than one thing looking. My heart starts to race with anticipation but I inch closer towards the door getting ready for the dangerous fate that awaits me. The wood was in the barn about twenty feet from the cabin. I drag the door open, as it is still from the snow. I look out into land as white as the heavens, drenched in a misty cold void. I slam the door shut as I was hit with the blanket of cold, the snow was up to my waist, there was no way I could get through that without freezing to death, I could get lost in the storm! So I have an idea I hobbled over to some of the supply’s my father left behind and find a rope, as I did this I couldn't get that sensation of someone watching over me out of my head. When I pull out the rope and stand, I glance out the window, my eye catches a dark figure lurking behind the falling white specks. I turn back towards the window only to find the same image as always, an abundance of snow and wind blowing by like a bird soaring through the air. I stare for seconds only to dismiss it as a tree. I walk to the door and tie the rope to the handle, the other to my abdomen. I open the door and take a deep breath ready to jump into the unknown. As I enter, it hits me, a putrid smell of dead cows rotting away in the cold. I forgot about them, father will be disappointed. I begin again and feel only numb as I shuffle and climb and hop over the waist-high powder. I feel practically nothing, it makes me glad. I inch closer and finally arrive, although the wood will most likely be wet and too cold to put into a fire, I can give it time to dry. As I enter the barn I gather everything I need, I pull on the rope to lead me back to the cabin but the only thing that I find is the tip of it with a charred like edge. I examine it and gaze at the black, jet coated stub. It looks as if something had burned it off. My mind starts to race with all the possibilities. I look back out the door and see only a storm. As I stand there in shock not knowing what to do I see something moving forward, I squint my eyes and notice a dark object steadily coming closer. It was impossible, the storm was too strong for something to glide so easily through the gust of snow. It had taken me 30 min at the very least but whatever was coming would be here within 3. It came closer while I backed up to a corner of the room, it's walls becoming smaller as my mind scrambled through the potential circumstances that may lead me to my death. Then something happened, as the figure reached the rotting wood of the barn, it seemed to give off a slight glow that soon turned into a tremendous beam of light. The feeling of warmth tickled my skin and I fell back. I jumped as the consummation of ice hit my hands once again, the warmth felt so familiar it scared me. The bright figure seemed to reach out a hand toward me. I was so mesmerizing by the beauty that I self-consciously pushed my arm toward it. Curiousity took over the feeble part of my mind . As I felt its the hand I began to glide just as the light next to me had, we left the barn and walked out into the snow, everything felt calm and relaxed. It looked into the sky and pulled me upward. I looked down toward my house but forgot. Forgot everything, it didn't seem to matter anymore, so I just went away.

The soldiers found the body lying in the corner of the house 2 hours after the storm ended, dead for 3 days. The father had been stuck in town after being snowed in, the only odd thing about this case was that about 20 feet in front of the house there had been a spot that looked something like a burn, what puzzled us, even more, was that there was no snow that fell over it as if it were avoiding it for some bizarre reason.
