The battlefield was a nightmare of smoke, gunfire, and chaos. The constant sound of gunshots echoed like an unrelenting drumbeat, and the acrid stench of gunpowder hung heavy in the air. Taehyung, clad in his tractical gear, crouched behind the makeshift barrier, his rifle gripped tightly in his gloved hands.
The remnants of his unit fought valiantly, but it was clear they were outnumbered and outmaneuvered. Betrayal had brought them to this moment -- a trap set by those they trusted. Taehyung's heart burned with rage and despair, knowing that his decisions had led his men to this slaughter.
Kim Taehyung (past)
(grit his teeth, before muttering to himself) "Damn it... I should've seen this coming."
Behind his, the sound of boots crunching on debris made him whirl around. His rifle snapped up instinctively, only to lower slightly when he saw who it was. Jungkook, his second-in-command and the man he had trusted most, stood there. His face was a mixture of desperation and guilt.
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(Panting) "Taehyung! You have to believe me--- I didn't know this would happen!"
Taehyung's gaze was cold, his voice sharp as a blade.
Kim Taehyung (past)
"Didn't know? You led us right into the ambush. How could you not know?"
Jeon Jungkook (Past)
(Stepping closer, and pleading) "It wasn't supposed to be like this! I was trying to save us, not destroy us!"
Before Taehyung could respond, an explosion tore through the air, sending both men to the ground. Taehyung's helmet clattered away, and his ears rang from the blast. He scrambled to his feet, blood dripping from a gash on his forehead.
Jungkook was nearby, struggling to rise.
Taehyung staggered toward him, but his steps flattered as his strength gave out. The edge of his vision collapsed onto the ground, the world fading around him. The last thing he saw was Jungkook's face, etched with regret and sorrow.
[Scene: A Mysterious Void]
Taehyung expected death, but instead, he found himself floating in a vast, empty void. A voice, calm yet commanding, echoed around him.
Voice: "Kim Taehyung, your journey is not over yet. You have been given a chance to change your fate and that of those around you. Will you take it?"
Taehyung's heart pounded. A chance to fix everything? To undo the betrayal, the loss? He clenched his fist, determination filling him.

"Yes. I'll take it."
•• Timeline - 8 years earlier ••
When Taehyung opened his eyes again, the chaos of the battlefield was gone. He was standing in a familiar room --his quarters at the military academy. The scent of freshly laundered uniforms and polished boots filled the air.
Taehyung looked down at his hands, unscathed and steady, and then at the mirror on the wall. The reflection staring back at him was his 22-year-old self.
Kim Taehyung
(staring intensely at his reflection, whispered slightly) "Eight years ago... I'm back."
The door burst open, and Jimin strode in full of energy and youth. Taehyung's heart clenched at the sight of his friend, alive and untainted by the tragedies to come.
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Grinning) "Taehyung! Stop daydreaming. The commander's waiting for us. Let's go!"
Taehyung nodded, a fierce building within him. This was his chance to rewrite the past, to protect those he had lost, and to uncover the truth behind everything that had gone wrong.

(With determination said to himself) "This time, I won't fail."
The Return of Junior officer~²
•• Time - Early Morning ••
The cold breeze of dawn whispered through the tall pine trees surrounding the military base. The sky, painted in hues of oranges and lavender, seemed to symbolize a new beginning.
Taehyung stood at the training grounds, his posture sharp, his expression unreadable. His pristine uniform bore the insignia of a newly minted Lieutenant, a rank he had earned with years of dedication and sweat.
But he wasn't the same inexperienced officer he appeared to be.

"So it all began from here!"
Taehyung murmured, his fingers brushing the fabric of his uniform. He closed his eyes briefly, his mind swirling with memories of betrayal and despair. Yet, those haunting images fueled his resolve.

"Not this time!" (clench his fist)
The sound of approaching footsteps interrupted his thoughts.
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Panting) "Lieutenant Kim! Already here?"

A familiar voice called out. Taehyung turned to see Jimin, his closest friend, now a fellow Second Lieutenant, jogging towards him. Jimin's boyish grin and slightly disheveled appearance were exactly as Taehyung remembered.

(Smirks) "Just thought I'd try being early for once."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"You? Early? Who are you, and what did you do to my lazy friend?"
Kim Taehyung
(chuckles softly) "People change, Jimin."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Raises an eyebrow) "Sure.... Anyway, don't make me look bad in front of the senior today. You're too good at these drills."
Kim Taehyung
"I'll try not to outshine you." (mischievous grin)
As they walked together to the training grounds, Taehyung couldn't help but notice the subtle difference in himself. His gaze sharper, and instincts honed by years of experience. Whims his peers saw a fresh graduate, Taehyung was a seasoned strategist trapped in a younger body.
The day passed with rigorous drills and tactical excercise. Taehyung excelled in every activities, his know and precision leaving even the instructors impressed.
Commanding officer
"Lieutenant Kim, your strategies during the simulation were remarkable. Where did you learn such advanced maneuvers?"
Kim Taehyung
(Bows respectfully) "Just reading and observing, sir."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Whisper from his seat) "Reading? When? Since when do you even open a book?"
Kim Taehyung
(Shoots him a warning gaze) "Focus on your notes, Jiminshiii."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Laughs quietly) "This new version of you is oddly suspicious."
Jimin's playful nature was comforting, a reminder of the few bonds that had survived his (Taehyung's) previous life.
As the base settled into quiet, Taehyung sat alone under the stars, his thoughts heavy with the weight of his mission. His gaze fell on the base's perimeter, where the forest stretched into the unknown.

(Sits beside Taehyung) "You've been staring at the forest for an hour. What's going on?"

(Pause) "Just thinking about the future.... And the past."

"Deep thoughts, huh? Don't let them weigh you down. We're just starting out."

(softly) "Exactly.... We're just starting out."

(Grins) "Alright, Mr philosopher. Come on, the others are joking around by the mess hall. You need to loosen up!"

"You go ahead. I'll join in a bit."

(looking at old maps) "It all started here. The mistakes, the betrayal.... This time, it'll be different."
Kim Taehyung
(To himself) "I won't let them suffer. Not Jimin. Not anyone else."
[Scene: Pre-Mission Briefing]

Commanding officer
"Your team is tasked with reconnaissance near the border. It should be a routine mission, but stay sharp."
Kim Taehyung
(Salutes) "Understood, sir."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Walking beside Taehyung) "You're quiet today. Nervous?"
Kim Taehyung
"No. Just.... Stay close to me out there, alright?"
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Frown) "You're being weird again, but fine. Let's do this."

Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Whisper) "It's too quiet here... "
Kim Taehyung
(Eyes scanning the area) "Stop. Everyone, halt!"

Soldier 1: "What's wrong, Lieutenant?"
Kim Taehyung
(Voice low) "Ambush."
His sharp instincts proved correct. Moments later, a volley of bullets shattered the quit. Chaos erupted.
Kim Taehyung
(Shouts) "Regroup! Move to the left flank!"
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Following closely) "How did you---?"
Kim Taehyung
"Later! focus now."
But Taehyung's quick thinking and precise commands ensured minimal casualties.

Taehyung's leadership was the talk of the camp.

Soldier 2: "Lieutenant Kim saved us out there. His instincts are incredible."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Grinning but curious) "Lieutenant Kim, huh? You're becoming a legend already."

"Okay, Spill. How did you know about the ambush?"

(Smirk) "Just a gut feeling."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"Gut feeling? yeah, right. You're hiding something."

(Laughs softly) "Goodnight, Jimin."

"Don't think you're off the hook, Lieutenant!"

Jimin wasn't convinced, but he let it go for now.

Taehyung straightened his posture as he sat before the commanding officer's desk. The older man's sharp eyes scanned a document before him, his expression neutral but laced with intrigue.

"You've been making waves, captain. The reports from your missions are nothing short of exemplary. Efficient, precision, leadership --you've got it all."
Kim Taehyung
"Thank you, sir. I'm just doing my duty."
Commanding officer
(chuckle) "Humble as always. But you know this isn't just about duty. Talent like you deserves a bigger stage. That's why I'm recommending you for transfer to Base 17."
Taehyung's brow furrowed slightly. Base 17 was one of the most advanced military facilities in the country, known for its cutting-edge technology and strategies importance.

"I'm honored, sir, but I'll have to decline."
The commanding officer blinked, taken aback.

"Decline? Do you understand the magnitude of this opportunity, captain? Base 17 isn't just a promotion; it's a fast track to the upper echelons of the military. General's dream of assignment."

"I understand, sir. But my decision stands."
Commanding officer
(lean forward to the table) "Why? You're wasting your potential here."
Kim Taehyung
"This base may not be as polished as Base 17, but it has its strengths. The soldiers here are eager to improve, and they deserve a leader who will stand by them, not leave at the first sign of a better offer."
The commanding officer stared at him for a long moment, his stern expression softening slightly.

"You're a rare breed, Captain. Very well. But don't let this base drag you down. If you ever reconsider, my door is always open."
Kim Taehyung
"Thank you, sir."
[Scene: The Barracks Meeting Room]
Jimin barged into the room with his usual flair, dropping a stack of papers onto the table.

Taehyung, seated at the head of the table, didn't even flinch.

"I was thinking about what's best for this base."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"What's best for this base? Taehyung, that place is a dream for many soldiers. State-of-the-art facilities, elite training programs, and connection that could skyrocket your career. And you chose this dump?"
Taehyung finally looked up, his gaze steady.
Kim Taehyung
"This 'dump' is my responsibility. I'm not abandoning it."
Jimin groaned, running a hand through his hair.
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"You are impossible. Do you know how many officers would kill for that post?"
Kim Taehyung
"I'm not every officer."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Sit down, exasperated) "Fine. But don't come crying to me when you're buried under paperwork and whining recruits."
Kim Taehyung
(smirk faintly) "Noted."
The heavy sound of boots echoed down the hall before the door swung open. Min Yoongi stepped in, his sharp gaze sweeping the room. His uniform was pristine, his aura commanding.
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
"Well, well. If it isn't the infamous Captain Kim and his loyal sidekick."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Grinning) "Yoongi-hyung, long time no see."
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
"Cut the pleasantries, Jimin. I'm here on business."
He turned his full attention to Taehyung, his expression unreadable.
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
"Captain Kim, I've got one question for you. Why the hell did you turn down the promotion to base 17?"
Taehyung's gaze didn't waver.
Kim Taehyung
"Because I have a job to do here."
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
(raise an eyebrow) "A job? You mean babysitting recruits who can barely march in a straight line?"
Kim Taehyung
"Training soldiers who can march into the battle. There's a difference."
Yoongi smirked, crossing his arms.
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)

"You've got guts, I'll give you that. But guts don't win wars, captain."
Kim Taehyung
"Neither does running away from challenges."
The room fell silent for a moment before Yoongi let out a low chuckle.
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
"Fair enough. But if you're staying here, you'd better make it count. The brass won't tolerate mediocrity."
Kim Taehyung
"I have no intention of being mediocre."
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
(nods) "Good. Because I'm your new commanding officer, I don't have time for slackers."
Jimin's eyes widened in surprise and Taehyung's too but being fast in covering his expression Taehyung hides it well, the confusion the question that arised for the time being.
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"Wait, you're staying here? Why?"
Min Yoongi (commanding officer)
"Someone has to keep an eye on this stubborn idiot."
Taehyung allowed himself a faint smile as Yoongi turned to leave.
[Scene: Strengthening the Base]
Later that evening, Taehyung stood on the training grounds, watching as his soldiers drilled under the fading sunlight. His minds raced with plans to revitalize the base - better training regimens, stronger alliances with neighbouring cramps, and fostering camaraderie among his team.
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
(Walking up beside him) "You're really going all in, huh?"
Kim Taehyung
"I don't do things halfway."
Park Jimin (Second Lieutenant)
"Just don't burn yourself out. You're not invincible, no matter how much you act like it."
Taehyung's lips curved into a rare smile.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Taehyung felt a renewed sense of purpose. This base was his, and he would do whatever it took to make it the best.
