Hi, I'm Diana, I'm 18 years old, I'm finishing high school, I have an older sister who is 25 years old, we look a lot alike, I live with my parents who own a technology company, we have never lacked anything, they have given us everything, now I am in my room studying for my exam so I can get into college.
"Daughter, why are you changing your mind now? I don't understand how."
my father shouts at her,
"You accepted."
"Well, I don't want to anymore," she tells them.
"You have no choice, it will only be for 1 year, it's already planned, we're sorry, it's that or we'll take everything away from you."
"Fine, get out, I want to be alone."
I hear my parents leaving her room and closing the door, they pass by my room and I smile at them.
"Rest," my father tells me, "tomorrow we have to be early for the wedding."
"Likewise, and yes, I'm going to sleep," I tell them.
My mother doesn't say anything, walking with him, I go to my sister's room and find her with her cell phone and a suitcase beside her.
"What are you doing?" I tell her.
She jumps startled as if I had discovered her, we are not that close but she is my sister, she is the one who always keeps space with me.
"I'm sorry," I tell her, "I didn't mean to scare you."
"I'm packing, get out of my room," she yells at me.
I quickly leave locking myself in mine for the rest of the night, we were never that close despite being sisters, I have always dedicated myself to my studies and she to her affairs as well, so I put away my books and go to sleep, I hear a knock on my door and it's my nanny who tells me that I have to get ready, my parents have already left to have the papers in order.
I go to my closet for my dress and put it on, getting ready, a makeup artist comes in to paint me, I'm ready and I go downstairs.
"Nanny, where's my sister?" I ask her when I see her.
"She already left," she tells me.
I nod, leaving as well, I get into the car with my designated driver, I don't see my sister's driver.
"Did my sister already leave?" I ask my driver.
"I don't know, miss," he tells me, "but the car isn't here, I imagine she already left."
I don't speak the whole way, I arrive at a huge house that looks more like a castle, we pass the huge gates and I see many cars, I get out when I see my mother who walks towards me grabbing me by the shoulders.
"Where is your sister Tiana?"
"I don't know," I tell her, not knowing what's happening.
I see my father talking on the cell phone in the yard, desperate.
"What's happening?" I ask him.
"She was supposed to come an hour ago and she hasn't arrived, we've already looked for her and she doesn't appear, did she tell you anything?" he asks me, shaking my shoulders.
"No, I only saw her packing last night."
"What do you mean packing?" my father yells at me when he hears me walking towards me, "Why didn't you tell us?"
"What was I supposed to tell you?" I tell them, "That she was packing to go live with her husband?"
"Daughter, she wouldn't take anything, if she packed it's because she fled."
"I don't know, what about her driver?" I tell them, "he wasn't there, he must know."
"He's not showing up either," he says, walking away, "we're ruined, they're asking questions and they gave me half an hour to fix it, I'll pay dearly for this, it's like a mockery of them."
"But it's not your fault," I tell him.
"Diana!"
my father tells me, taking my face while my mother doesn't stop crying,
"They don't understand that, there's only the simple fact that your sister escaped and they will leave us ruined and I don't know what they will do to me."
"But we can explain to them," I tell him, entering the huge house that is super luxurious while my father follows me, I see an older couple standing in some huge windows.
"Tania?"
Her mother tells me and everyone turns to look at me.
"We have to end this."
someone speaks who I hadn't noticed was sitting smoking, he gets up signing a paper and I can see that he has a cold look, he is super tall and wears a tailored suit. He leaves the pen indicating me to sign.
"I don't, I'm not,"
I tell them stuttering and I see that the door opens and my parents enter.
"Excuse me but she is not Tania."
He doesn't finish speaking because I see how they grab him by the neck, hitting him against the wall, a security guard with black glasses
"Are you retracting, well, you bear the consequences."
I hear the same guy who signed the paper speaking from the table.
"That's not it, Mr. Fabian,"
says my father.
Now I understand, it's with him that my sister would marry, my mother looks at me desperately and I don't understand what she wants to tell me.
"You no longer want to marry your daughter, that's disloyal, I trusted you."
an older man speaks.
"Leave it, father."
says Mr. Fabian,
"Get out," he shouts at us.
"Gentlemen, there will be no wedding, excuse me," I tell them.
"Why do you say that?"
I hear Fabian laughing, releasing the smoke from the cigarette,
"Don't play hard to get," he tells me with a familiarity, he approaches and without giving him time to continue speaking I slap him.
My eyes are on the person I just hit and he looks at me with hatred, from one moment to another he grabs me by the neck and I try to get out, he releases me turning his back.
"Disappear from my sight."
he shouts making my father take me by the arm taking me out of the house.
"What did you do."
my mother tells me being outside,
"We must get you out of here."
says my father with the phone to his ear.
"Why?"
"Does it seem little to you to have slapped the man who was upset because your sister didn't arrive at the wedding?"
"Take her to the house."
my father tells my driver,
"But now!"
he shouts, and I get into the car and my parents get into theirs,
We arrive home almost at the same time I quickly go up to pack and my father goes up to the office, I pack what I can until I hear a loud bang downstairs as if they were breaking something and I carefully peek out,
"Do you think I have come here showing my face to people like you."
I hear them talking and I peek out more from the stairs seeing how my father is surrounded by men with visible weapons.
"Mr. Fabian, my daughter who would marry you fled," he says.
"You don't know how to run a family that you let your daughter flee, and the other you didn't educate well."
"Sir, an apology in the name of my two daughters."
I hear them talking and it's my mother who is crying in a corner, there are many armed men in the doors and windows.
"Did you think there would be no consequences, you hide one, and want to pass her off as her sister, you promised me a daughter so you will give me one," he says.
and I cover my mouth so that my crying is not heard when fear takes me.
"Sir, my daughter Diana just turned 18 years old."
"Of course, you only accepted the money, you hid one, don't want to be the good father now."
"That's not it, sir, it's just that my daughter Tiana was already 25 years old, and the agreement was for her."
"Or is it because Tiana is not yours."
he says and my mother cries louder,
"What kind of father are you, I knew you wanted one more but not to that extent, that's why you protect the one that is yours more."
"I love both of them equally."
says my father, and I don't know where he gets that from.
"Then give me the other, if you don't care, because I won't be left as a fool."
"Sir, there are many families who would kill for me to choose their daughters, you can't just let this pass, as soon as I get the money I will return it to you."
"I already told you, I won't be left as a fool, you comply or you comply, you will say if you want to be watching over your daughter or know that you have her married, which in any case will be the same."
"Just let me go up and see her," my father says.
I quickly go to my room, sitting on the bed and watching my father enter.
"Isn't Tiana your daughter?" I ask him.
"Your mother was already pregnant with your sister when I met her, but I love both of you," he tells me.
"I don't think so," I say, "You don't do to a daughter what you did to her."
"Daughter."
He speaks but doesn't finish.
"I know," I say to him.
"It will only be for a year, she didn't leave us any other choice," he says.
"You could have not accepted her help, but you didn't choose that," I say, getting up.
I leave the room and go downstairs. She's standing with her back to me. I walk towards my mother.
"I'm sorry," I say to her.
"You have nothing to apologize for, daughter," she says.
I see that with a nod of his head, Fabian makes guards enter, grabbing me.
"Don't pull that crap that she also runs away with her driver," he says.
They take me out of the house, putting me in a car, and I see my parents through the car window. I hear him get in through the other door, sitting next to me. The car starts, and I feel him grabbing my chin to make me look at him.
"Spoiled brat," he says, squeezing my chin to the point where it hurts me and I break free. He tries to grab me again, and I move back, away from him, but it's no use because he gets closer. "You will pay for what your damn sister did," he tells me.
"It hurt your ego that she preferred to run away than marry you," I say, "She was smarter."
"Good for her, right?" he says, "Although not so much when I find her because she will pay for it, I will show them why people fear me."
"By marrying you, I pay her debt," I say, and he doesn't respond.
I notice that we're returning to the same house.
"You pay your debt and it was so I didn't kill you for the slap you gave me," he says, getting out of the car. We walk together to the huge house, and upon entering, the same people are there.
"Sign," he tells me, and I go to sign. I see that his signature is already there. I read that it says Fabian Adkins and I stamp mine.
A lady approaches with a chest and hands him a ring that he takes and reluctantly puts on me. I see that he already has his on.
"Let's go to the table," a lady says who, from what I see, is his mother. "Let's go, dear," she tells me.
I walk with them, and I see that Fabian stays behind with a girl who is very well dressed. I remember seeing her in the living room when I slapped him. Now I understand, she's his lover. Poor my sister, that's why she escaped. This idiot brought his lover on the wedding day.
"Here, sister-in-law," I hear someone say to me, and I see a boy who looks a lot like Fabian. "My name is Damian," he tells me, sitting next to me.
"Hello," I say.
"Tiana, right?" he asks me, and I deny it.
"Tiana is my sister, I'm Diana."
"My brother is bitter," he says in my ear, and I laugh. "How old are you?"
"18," I say, "and you?"
"I'm 20, and my brother is already 30, he's old," he says, making me half laugh. "I like you a lot."
"Get out of here," I hear someone say behind us, and Damian gets up.
"Mother," he shouts, "I'm leaving."
My mother-in-law arrives and sees him sad.
"What's wrong?" I hear her say, "Stay, it's your brother's meal with your sister-in-law, you know how he is and you sit next to her just to provoke him."
"Of course not, I'm leaving. The only one I like here is my sister-in-law and I've only known her for 5 minutes, I better go," he says, and I see him leave the house.
"At least you can pretend," I hear Fabian say to me, and I turn my gaze back to the food they are serving.
"Says the one who brings his lover as a witness to his wedding," I say.
"Don't meddle in my affairs," he says without looking at me.
"Same to you," I say, and I get him to get up annoyed from the table, walking to the exit, and the few people there look at me.
"What a beautiful dress," a girl who is sitting in front says to me.
"Thank you, it's the dress I wore for my sister's wedding," I say, and everyone goes silent again.
"Daughter," my mother-in-law approaches, "The driver will take you to my son's apartment," she tells me, and I nod, getting up. "Eat first."
"No, thank you," I say, "I'm not hungry."
I go out and notice that it is already night, it is very cold. I get into the car that takes me to that idiot's apartment. I enter when they open the door for me, it's an older lady.
"Follow me," she says, and we go upstairs. "This is the Lord's room, it is forbidden to enter, this is yours," she tells me, and it is a room opposite his.
"Thank you," I say, entering, and it's not bad. I take off the dress, entering the bathroom, uncovering new soap and a new sponge, scrubbing myself, and a new brush, I brush myself, putting on the robe, and I leave with a towel wrapped in my hair. I pick up the dress that I left lying around and look for my cell phone in a hidden bag. When I find it, I fold the dress, putting it away, I lie down on the bed and when I turn it on there are many missed calls and messages. My cell phone vibrates with a call and it is the number of my best friend Dilan.
"Hello Diana," I hear him say, "I didn't see you go to the university to take the exam."
"It's just that I got sick," I say, and cough so that he believes me.
"I'm close by, I can come and see you."
"No, no, it's just that for the holidays my parents brought me to some friends," I say, "I'm not in the city."
"Let me know when you get back, I love you and take care of yourself," he says.
"Okay, take care too, I love you," I say, hanging up.
I call my parents,
"Daughter," she answers quickly, "How are you? They didn't even let me go into the house, we wanted to see you, your sister still hasn't appeared, forgive me, daughter."
"Daughter," I hear my mother's voice, "We are fine, I want you to take care of yourself, tomorrow your father will meet with Fabian to sign the papers, it will only be a year, my girl."
"Yes, I know, that's what keeps me sane and drives me not to give up, I love you very much," I say, "Tomorrow I will go see you."
"Okay, try to rest," they tell me and hang up.
The only thing I think about is my sister Tiana, she better be enjoying herself while I suffer here, she agreed the first time my parents told her about this, her wedding was not something that happened overnight, I don't understand how she left like that from one day to the next, I hear the door open, it's Fabian who enters.
"Who are you talking to?" he says very seriously, and I don't answer, I just watch him.
"I'm not asking you who you're leaving with, am I?" I say to Fabian, who's standing and walks towards me, pinning me against the wall.
"You're no one to ask me things, girl, and you better learn your place."
"Now you can get out of my room," I say, looking him in the eye.
"You slap me again and I'll educate you, since your father didn't." He leaves the room, slamming the door.
I lock it and lie down to sleep. I hear a knock and see the same woman who greeted me yesterday.
"Your in-laws have come to have breakfast with you," she says.
"I'll be down in a minute," I say.
I go back to brushing my teeth and half-fix my hair with my fingers, I adjust my robe and go downstairs, they turn to look at me and I see Fabian sitting.
"Come, daughter, sit with us," my mother-in-law says.
"Good morning," I say, sitting down. They serve me and I start eating.
"Have your parents contacted you yet?" my father-in-law asks and I nod.
"I'm going to see them today," I say.
"Arrange with Fabian for him to take you."
"That's what the driver is for," Fabian says without looking at me, "just remember that your parents don't have a third daughter."
"Tiana!" my mother-in-law says, "would you like to go shopping with me?"
"Diana!" I correct her, "my sister is Tiana, and yes, thank you, I would like to go with you."
"I'm sorry," my mother-in-law says, embarrassed.
"Don't worry," I say, "it's understandable."
"See you later," my father-in-law says to his wife, leaning in to give her a chaste kiss.
Fabian gets up and walks to the exit and my father-in-law leaves with him.
"Daughter, I'm leaving," my mother-in-law says, getting up, "let me know when you're ready to go out together."
I nod and she leaves and I go up to my room and put on the same dress as yesterday,
I go downstairs and the driver is there, serious.
He opens the door for me and I get in, he gets in too and sets the location and follows it until we arrive,
"Wait here," I say.
"I have orders to go up with you," he says.
"Tell your boss that if he wants to watch me, he should do it himself," I say, getting out and entering my house, closing the door.
"Daughter," my mother walks towards me as soon as she sees me, "how are you?"
"Fine, and my father?"
"He went with your husband, he called him to close the deal."
"Call him sir or whatever you want but don't say he's my husband," I say.
"Diana?" I hear someone call me and when I look back I see my friend standing there, I run to hug him, "when did you arrive?" "I was passing by and saw you enter."
"I missed you," I say, hugging him.
"How nice," I hear someone say and when I pull away from my friend I see Fabian standing with his hands in his pockets, "my wife hasn't even been married for a day and she's already with a man."
"No sir, he is her childhood friend," my father says,
And my friend looks at us without understanding anything.
"I imagine that's what he said about his other daughter before she ran away with the driver."
"Diana!" my friend says, "what's going on? Why does he say you're his wife?"
"I'll tell you later," I say, and he nods.
"Excuse me, sirs," he says, leaving, and when he passes Dylan's side.
"If you value your life, don't come here again."
My friend finishes leaving and I look at my father,
"I don't think those papers will be valid until his daughter respects herself and doesn't tarnish my name by behaving like a tramp" and I clench my fists.
"Of course not, sir, my daughter will comply with the year but you gave me your word that she will resume her life again, once that date is met."
"Aha, and if she knows how to behave," he says, leaving my house.
"Only one year," my father says and I nod, going up to my room, I already had the suitcases packed, my father helps me take them down and when I leave the driver looks more serious, taking the suitcases up, I say goodbye to my parents who for some reason look at me with pity, I get in the car next to Fabian
"You already know what will happen the next time you don't comply with what I order," Fabian says without looking up.
"Yes sir," the driver says, starting the car.
"Leave me at the office and my wife with my mother," he says.
"I'm not a rag to be dragged from here to there, I can decide where I'm going," I say almost shouting but I'm grabbed by the jaw strongly,
"You raise your voice to me again and you don't want to know what will happen," he says.
"Go bother your lover," I say,
"From what I see, you are not only a badly educated girl but also rude and lacking manners."
"You married the wrong one," I say.
"I already know that," he says and I feel like slamming him against the car window.
The car stops at what I think is his company, it has many floors, he gets out and closes the door, the car stops when it arrives at my mother-in-law's.
I look in the suitcases for pants with my sneakers and a crop top, I grab them and get out of the car, I enter my in-laws' house, I ask for a bathroom to change and I do so, I fold my dress, storing it in a backpack that I bring with my things, when I go downstairs my mother-in-law looks at me surprised,
"You look like a girl," she tells me.
"Sister-in-law? I didn't recognize you in those clothes," Damian says.
"Let's go," my mother-in-law says, leaving. We arrive at the plaza and Damian pulls me.
"Come, I'll show you something," he says, going to a claw machine, he fails twice, making me laugh, on the third he hits a large stuffed animal and gives it to me.
"Thank you," I say, grabbing it,
I see my mother-in-law talking to some people along with Damian, we approach.
"Damian, how beautiful your girlfriend is," they say.
"No, she is Fabian's wife," my mother-in-law corrects them
They apologize, we continue walking and at a table sitting I see Fabian with his father and other people, next to him the same woman,
"Hello son," his mother arrives to greet him, and greets her husband as well.
"Hello ma'am" Fabian's lover greets her and my mother-in-law half-smiles at her.
"We're leaving because we have things to buy," she says and one of the men speaks.
"I didn't know Damiancito had a girlfriend."
"Isn't she beautiful?" Damian says, making Fabian look at us.
"She is Fabian's wife," his father corrects, and the partners apologize.
"Don't worry," Damian says, "my brother got himself such a young wife too."
"I have what I want," Fabian says, "it's not my fault you can't get one like that," he tells him.
"And if we ask my sister-in-law?" he says and I can't feel more uncomfortable.
"Okay, we'll let you work," my mother-in-law says.
We walk away and out of the corner of my eye I see that Fabian didn't care, because he continues as if nothing happened, while his lover gets closer to him.
