Beyond the Veil of Time

chapter 1 : You Like Her, Don't You?

The classroom buzzed with chatter as students filed in, greeting each other with laughter and excitement as the first bell of the day rang. At the back of the room, a boy, around 17 or 18 years old, leaned casually against his desk, chatting with his friends. His name was Max, and his relaxed demeanor made him a natural center of attention.

"So, you actually think Mrs. Henderson is going to give us a pop quiz today?" one of his friends, Jake, asked with a grin, already dreading the idea.

Max chuckled, running a hand through his messy hair. "I wouldn't put it past her. But I'm pretty sure I can ace anything she throws our way. Unlike you, of course," he teased, nudging Jake with his elbow.

"Hey, I don't need your smart-aleck comments," Jake shot back with a smirk. "At least I didn’t forget to study last night."

Max grinned, unfazed. "I’m just naturally brilliant," he said, leaning back in his chair, his tone playful.

He glanced around the room, his eyes falling on Lena, who sat at her desk near the front. She was laughing softly, her voice warm and welcoming as she spoke to a few of the students around her. Her smile was like a beam of sunlight, effortlessly drawing people in. It didn’t matter who you were—Lena had a way of making everyone feel like they mattered.

"What's up with Lena, anyway?" Jake asked, following Max’s gaze.

Max shrugged, though his eyes lingered on Lena, who was busy chatting with a couple of people. She was always so friendly, so approachable, but Max couldn’t shake the feeling there was more to her than she let on. She was the kind of person who seemed like she never had a bad day, always smiling, always ready to help anyone who needed it. But Max had caught glimpses of something deeper—moments when she seemed lost in her own world, staring off into space with a far-off look in her eyes, as if something was weighing on her mind.

"She’s just... nice," Max said, trying to sound casual. "You know, always helping out. Talking to everyone."

Jake raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, but there’s always that one person who’s a little too nice, right? You think she’s hiding something?"

Max shook his head, his thoughts momentarily clouded by the question. "I don’t know. I mean, she's friendly with everyone, like... too friendly, you know? It’s like she’s got no secrets."

Jake snorted. "Ha! That’s funny. It’s like you want her to have a secret." He leaned back in his chair, grinning at Max. "You like her, don’t you?"

Max blinked, caught off guard, and his face flushed slightly. He quickly turned away, trying to play it cool. "What? No! I just—I don’t know. She’s... just different."

Jake smirked. "Uh-huh, 'different.' Dude, you’ve got it bad."

Max groaned, rubbing his forehead in frustration. "I don’t have a crush on her, okay? Can we just drop it?"

Ryan, who had been quietly listening, glanced up from his phone with a smirk. "Max, man, you’re blushing. If that’s not a crush, then I don’t know what is."

Jake laughed. "Don’t worry, Max. We all see it."

Max sighed, trying to steer the conversation away from Lena, but his mind kept drifting back to her. She was always the center of attention, but in a quiet way. People adored her, and it wasn’t hard to see why. Her kindness seemed effortless, but sometimes, just sometimes, Max wondered if it was too effortless. Was there something she was hiding beneath that bright smile?

He glanced at her again, catching her glance for just a moment. She smiled back at him, and for a brief second, he felt something he couldn't quite put into words—something soft, but also full of possibility.

"Alright, let’s get to class," Max said, standing up quickly to distract himself from his thoughts.

chapter 2 :What's The Rush?

Max slung his bag over his shoulder as the final bell of the day rang, signaling the end of another school day. His friends were already gathering by the door, finishing up their conversations and packing away their things. Max quickly joined them, stepping into the hallway with the rest of the group.

Jake, ever the joker and the shortest of the group, shot Max a grin. "You’ve got math homework to handle, right?" he teased, nudging him lightly with his elbow. "Don’t forget we still need to cram for that test."

Max smirked, brushing him off casually. "I’ll handle it," he said confidently. "I’m naturally brilliant, you know."

Ryan, the taller twin with shaggy blonde hair, gave Max a side-eye and chuckled. "Sure, 'brilliant,'" he teased. "Maybe if you actually helped us study for once, you'd get more than just a passing grade."

Max shook his head with a grin. "If you actually studied, you wouldn’t need me," he shot back.

Sarah, Ryan’s twin sister with short, platinum blonde hair, had just zipped up her bag and turned toward them, raising an eyebrow at their usual banter. Sarah had always been the level-headed one in the group—Max’s close friend for years. While he tended to act on impulse, Sarah was always the one to keep him grounded, the voice of reason among the chaos. She shot them both a pointed look.

"I swear, you two are hopeless," Sarah said with a small laugh, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "You’d be lost without someone to keep you in check."

Zara, standing beside Sarah and finishing up with her own bag, smirked. With her wavy brown hair and grounded, practical nature, Zara had always been the more skeptical one of the group. She didn’t share Max’s or Jake’s enthusiasm for weird things, often rolling her eyes at their wild ideas. Yet, Zara stuck around—her bond with the group was strong enough to make her part of all their ridiculous adventures.

"Yeah, if you spent less time daydreaming and more time listening to Sarah, we might get through the day without any disasters," Zara added with a teasing smile, her arms crossing as she stood next to Sarah.

Max grinned, trying to brush off their teasing. "You guys underestimate my brilliance," he said with a wink. "I've got everything under control."

As they filed out of the classroom, Jake and Ryan continued their usual banter. Max, however, found his attention drifting back to Lena, who was heading to the school exit in front of him.

"Alright, let’s get going," he muttered to his friends, suddenly eager to walk faster and escape the unease that had settled over him.

"What's the rush?" Jake asked, his voice laced with amusement as he saw max walking ahead of him.

Max didn’t meet his eyes, still focused on Lena’s retreating figure. "oh, I just remember that I have to reach home early today." he said, trying to sound casual.

Ryan gave Max a quizzical look. "You’ve been acting weird all day. What’s going on?" he asked, his tone casual but his eyes sharp.

Max quickly brushed it off, turning toward the door. "Nothing. I have to reach early because my parents have to go for a bussiness trip so I have to look after lisa or else she will be alone."

Jake raised an eyebrow but didn’t press the issue. He tossed his bag over his other shoulder and followed Max. "Alright, but I’m watching you," he teased.

As they made their way toward the exit, Max couldn’t help but glance over at Lena again. She was already getting in her father's car. There was something about her that drew him in, and even though he tried to push the thought away, it was hard to ignore the way his heart raced every time she was near.

"Are you going to talk to her or just stare at her all day?" Jake’s voice cut through Max’s thoughts.

Max tensed, his face flushing. He shot Jake a glare. "I’m not staring at her. I just..." He trailed off, unwilling to admit what was really going on.

Sarah, who had been walking next to Ryan glanced over at max with a raised eyebrow. "What’s going on with you?" she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and concern.

Max ran a hand through his messy hair, trying to play it cool. "Nothing, really. Just... let’s go."

chapter 3 :The Lost Watch

Suddenly, Jake stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening. "Wait! I forgot my sketchbook in the art room!" he exclaimed, his voice full of exaggerated panic.

Ryan groaned, rolling his eyes. "Are you serious? You’re gonna go back for that now?" he asked, looking at Jake as if he were already late for something important.

Jake just shrugged, completely unbothered by Ryan’s frustration. "You know how Miss Baker gets about her art supplies," he said with a grin, then made a beeline for the door.

Max sighed but nodded, not wanting to let Jake go back to the art room alone. "Fine, let’s go."

The group turned back and headed toward the art room. The long hallway echoed with the sound of their footsteps, but Max's mind was elsewhere. As they approached the familiar door to the art room, Jake pushed it open, and the group stepped inside. The room was a chaotic mix of half-finished projects, scattered paint tubes, and students’ forgotten tools. Jake immediately dove into the mess, determined to find his sketchbook, while Max glanced around absentmindedly.

It was then that something caught his eye—something that didn’t belong. Amidst the clutter of art supplies, a small gleam of metal reflected the harsh fluorescent light from overhead.

"What’s this?" Max muttered to himself as he moved closer, curiosity piqued.

Lying partially hidden behind a stack of empty jars, the object gleamed like a mysterious artifact. Max carefully picked it up, his fingers tracing the smooth, cold surface of the watch. The design was sleek and unusual, unlike anything he had ever seen. The watch had a strange, almost otherworldly glow to it. The symbols etched around the edge seemed to shimmer faintly as Max rotated it in his hands, and the warmth that pulsed through his fingers gave him an odd sense of connection to it.

"Did you find something?" Sarah asked, her voice cutting through his thoughts as she walked up behind him.

Max didn’t respond immediately, still captivated by the watch. "I don’t know… it doesn’t look like it belongs here," he muttered, turning the watch over to examine the intricate markings on the back.

Jake, who had found his sketchbook by now, looked up and narrowed his eyes at the watch. "Whoa. That’s definitely not a school supply," he said, a mixture of curiosity and humor in his voice. "Where did that even come from?"

Max was about to answer when the door creaked open. Lena stepped into the room, her presence immediately drawing Max's attention. She paused for a brief moment when she saw the group gathered around the object in Max's hand. Her eyes flickered to the watch, and Max could’ve sworn he saw a flash of something—surprise, maybe even excitement—before she quickly masked it with her usual calm expression.

"Hey, what’s going on?" Lena asked, her voice casual, but there was a hint of curiosity in her eyes as she took a step closer.

Max hesitated, feeling a rush of conflicting emotions. He didn’t want to make it seem like they were hiding anything, but at the same time, something about the watch felt... different. The way it had felt in his hand, the way it almost seemed to pulse with energy—it was like it was meant for him to find. He quickly slipped it into his pocket, trying to act nonchalant.

"Nothing. We’re just about to head out," he said, though his voice was a little too casual to be convincing.

Lena’s eyes flicked toward his pocket, a slight frown appearing for a split second. Then she smiled, the expression soft and understanding. "Didn’t you guys leave already?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in amusement.

Max blinked, momentarily thrown off by the question. He hadn’t expected Lena to be back at school after having already left. "Didn’t you already go home?" he asked, genuinely curious.

Lena shrugged, a playful smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I was heading out, but I realized I forgot something important here. Had to come back and grab it before I left for good," she explained, her tone light, though her gaze lingered just a little longer on Max’s pocket than it probably should have.

Max nodded quickly, trying to brush off any awkwardness. "Ah, I see. Well, we’re just heading out now too. Need a ride?"

Lena smiled, her eyes glinting with a mix of amusement and something Max couldn’t quite place. "No, my dad’s waiting for me at the entrance. I have to hurry before he gets impatient," she said, her voice warm and playful, but there was something in her expression that seemed to suggest she was holding back—something she didn’t want to say just yet.

Max nodded in understanding. "Got it. Take care, Lena," he said, a little more reluctantly than he intended.

Lena waved goodbye, giving them all a quick glance as she turned to leave. As she exited the room, her steps quickened, and Max watched her for a moment, his mind still on the watch, now safely tucked away in his pocket.

The group remained silent for a few moments before Jake broke the quiet, glancing between Max and Sarah. "What was that about?" he asked, his voice teasing, though there was a touch of curiosity in it. "You’re acting a little weird, man."

Max quickly shoved the uneasy feeling down. "Nothing," he said, trying to sound casual. "Let’s just go."

As they left the art room, Max felt the weight of the watch pressing against his side. His mind raced with questions. What was it? Why had it felt so strange when he held it? And why had Lena looked at it the way she did?

He glanced back at the doorway to the art room, half-expecting Lena to come back. But she didn’t.

Instead, he caught a glimpse of her heading out of the school, her figure disappearing into the distance. And yet, the strange connection he felt to the watch—and to the moment—remained.
