The premise of becoming an author is that you are a reader who loves in-depth reading. If you can easily convert the text you see into pictures while reading, then it is almost certain that you have the talent for writing online novels. If you can’t, you can also make up for it through training. The method is very simple. Try to convert the movie fragments you watch into text. Train a few more times, and you will probably get a sense of picture.
What preparations do you need to do before creating a book?
Firstly, determine the theme of the novel. Choose a subject that you are familiar with, such as the type of novel you often read, so that your writing logic can be rigorous and drive the plot smoothly. If a student has not read a novel of office theme, he or she probably will create an office novel with many flaws. If you want more people to read your novel, you also need to pay attention to the topics of those most popular online novels. Readers of each website are of different age groups, and their preferences are definitely different. It is necessary to attract readers through understanding what most readers want to read and what kind of experience they want to obtain in the text. This part will be discussed in detail in the next chapter.
After the theme is determined, the book title and pen name must be determined. The title of the book is actually very important. It should not be too long, otherwise it would be hard to read or search, and it should not be similar to other titles. It should be able to catch people's attention immediately. The choice of a pen name is very important for an author. It is of significance both in external promotion and in communicating with readers. When choosing a pen name, it is usually necessary to please both to ears and eyes and to be easy for people to remember and for you to call yourself. Do not use homophones of certain prohibited words, and use less rare and difficult-to-pronounce words.
The next step is character setting. First, you need to determine the most important option in your work, the hero or the heroine. Then there comes the antagonist. It is used to highlight the other side of the protagonist. The characters of the two characters are mostly opposite. Subsequently, you need to design the supporting characters. The setting of supporting characters is complementary so as to avoid duplication between the characters, because once repeated, the characteristics of the characters will be weakened.
Once the character setting is done, and then the main storyline should be set. It can be divided into two lines---the open plots and the hidden plots. Except for the main line of the protagonist, which is unbreakable, other lines are much more flexible. They can be shelved, broken, reorganized, or even exchanged. In short, the main line surrounding the protagonist is unique, and other lines can be changed.
So as to now, you have main line, then what next?
After the main storyline setting, you can officially start designing the outline. The function of the outline can be understood as the Big Dipper, which can guide your writing direction when you are lost. Some milestones need to be included in the outline to facilitate the writing process. The guide of outline writing will be detailed in the next tutorial.
Secondly, there is also the need to understand the basic structure of the novel.
The content of a good novel must have ups and downs, otherwise it will be like a day-to-day account. In the outline, the structure is a very important part.
The structure can be divided into conflict, development, minor climax, buildup, and major climax.
The conflict here refers not only to the conflict between the characters, but also to the first plot that needs to grab the reader's attention in the text, which can be a fight or a romantic encounter. A flat plot is definitely not strong enough to be conflicting, so you must avoid starting with a diary of events. If you lose too many readers at the beginning, the rest of the novel will certainly not be appealing.
For example, the opening chapter describes how the heroine looks for a job, and when she gets one, it will feel a little dull. But if she is mocked and framed during the process by a female supporting role, and she uses her intelligence to pass the interview, it's more likely to grab the reader's attention.
The development can be taken as building up to the climax. Like a spring, the harder it is pressed, the higher it bounces off the ground. The more severe the crisis the protagonist faces, the more enjoyable it will be for the reader when he succeeds. The better the development is paved, the more the climax will lift the reader's mood.
Minor climaxes are the ones that give the reader initial gratification, such as the first date between the heroine and her crush, the fight back of the heroine who has always been bullied, and so on.
The minor climax is often followed by a buildup to the next part of the story, leaving readers wondering what will happen next. In case the reader gives up on the book after reading the major climax.
It's easy to understand the significance of the major climax, which needs to be more emotionally engaging for readers than the minor one. For example, a romantic relationship established by the heroine and the hero, the retribution for the villain bullying the heroine with no chance to stand up, etc.
Well-structured novels with compact rhythm, complete and smooth story, are better at retaining readers.
