Rebirth:Love Is Uncanny

Death card

Standing by the small stall, Kim Eun-Jung felt the chill of autumn penetrate her skin, the trench-coat she wore not aiding much to shield her against the cold. Seoul has always been a cold city, considered by most as the heart of South Korea.

It was the capital of South Korea and the center of economy and culture. Many locals embraced the need to self-employ, so it was not a surprise that Kim Eun-Jung found herself in front of the small stall.

The stand was decorated with different trinkets, a crystal ball on its front with a couple of cards besides it. The lighting was a mixture of different shades of purple and blue that resonated its hue from the bulbs.

Kim Eun-Jung was not a person who believed in mythical and supernatural events. She has always been a rational person who thought of every way through before taking a step. This being so, it was quite difficult for her to comprehend why she was drawn to the stall opposite her, especially the woman that stood behind it.

The woman, dressed not too shabby nor exceptionally fancy, seemed normal to the eye except for her eyes. A mixture of black and brown, a blending color that dissipates into distinct layers at the end.

On the counter before her, the cards were displayed. Kim Eun-Jung took her time gazing at the different cards, contemplating while looking at the diverse symbols on each card. The woman had earlier announced that she should pick a card from the display. She was indecisive but still gave herself courage.

She took a card, slipping it in her hand. Kim Eun-Jung stared at it bewildered. In it, she saw a tall skeleton covered in dark robes holding a scythe. The image was not pleasant even for a non-believer. She knew nothing about tarot cards or psychisme. None of them had ever piqued her interest. If not, she thought it was fraud, a way to cheat people out of their money by making them believe in mystical things that were untrue.

Kim Eun-Jung has always been a rational person. Skipping three grades, she was considered a prodigy and just at twenty-five she had contributed to most of South Korea's economy and technology in science and medicine. She was about making money and focusing on her studies.

"Death Card."

Those two words from the person in front cut off her train of thoughts.

"You picked the death card girl," her raspy voice echoed in Kim Eun-Jung's ears.

A death card. What was a death card?

As if listening to her thoughts, the woman uttered, "A death card represents the end and also symbolizes life. It's a contrasting card not easy to decipher by most." She explained, not detailing more.

The twenty-five-year-old stared at the card, an unknown feeling creeping its way into her. Involuntarily, she held the strand of her backpack, seeking comfort as she put more pressure on it. She was getting uncomfortable by each second.

Turning on her heels about to make an escape, she wanted to flee. Run from the bizarre night. She was exhausted from staying in the research lab the whole day. The only thing she wanted and yearned for was rest, a break from her ever busy life. A step ahead, she halted after a monotone voice echoed in her ears, filling the silence.

"Take it,'' the fortune-teller spoke.

Kim Eun-Jung stopped in her tracks and turned to the senior. She stared a bit at her, taking a moment, then shifted her gaze away to the card on the hand of the woman's that was drawn towards her.

Turmoil cornered her. She did not trust or believe in metaphysics. This was a branch that Kim Eun-Jung had never dared to dwell in. The reason was it majored more in illogical phenomenons, whereas she specialized in logical science and discovery.

Seeing her hesitancy, the fortune-teller added, "You never know, your fate might as well change."

With her words spoken, the elder lady offered an encouraging smile to the female opposite her. In her lifetime, she has seen many with different complicated fates. However, she has never seen one with a twist in their fate. A double destiny, to be exact.

Kim Eun-Jung shook off the creepy feeling in her and took the card from the woman. She gave a slight bow to the fortune-teller and walked away. Her steps took her to the vehicle she had packed after her decision to wander off towards the streets and take a walk. This was to ease her mind, but she had never thought that her site-seeing would lead her to a fortune-teller's stall.

Getting in the vehicle, she placed her backpack on the passenger seat. The prodigy leaned against her seat, calming herself before preparing to journey to her home. About to turn on the engine, she heard her phone vibrate from her bag. Kim Eun-Jung pulled out the phone from the bag to look at it.

On the screen was a notification from her writing agency. It was an agency where they worked with authors to publish books. They had requested a meet up with her. Looking at the message, she recalled her book that she hadn't exactly completed. Kim Eun-Jung didn't know how to end the book. She had not yet thought of the ending of her novel.

Digging through her bag, she took her laptop and opened the draft she had written. Scrutinizing the words, she edited some parts about the antagonist. The novel she was updating was about a female protagonist, daughter of a rich family who spent her whole life in an orphanage while the adopted heiress who was the antagonist lived her life. The two were swapped at birth, except the protagonist didn't get a family and was forced to live in an orphanage.

With good grades, she managed to get to her family. The antagonist had poor grades and constantly picked fights with the female protagonist. Their battle is mainly on the male lead. Competing for his love and affection. Except for the fact that the male protagonist only doted on the female lead and despised the female antagonist.

Kim Eun-Jung stared at the antagonist's name. The name was too basic so she thought of changing her name. She worked on the laptop and replaced the antagonist's name with her own.

A small smile plastered on her lips, she closed the device and started the vehicle. Writing was her only comfort.

Seoul streets were always busy from day to night. This being so, Kim Eun-Jung had decided to buy a house in the upper part of Seoul where noise was irrelevant, where she could get her solitude. She passed the busy streets heading out where she only started to see thick dense trees covering the areas.

Unaware how, Kim Eun-Jung felt the sudden drop in temperature in the car. This was strange. She thought. Checking the car's AC, she found no problem with it.

Progressing with her journey, she saw the card fall from her backpack down to the car floor. It was even stranger because in no way could it just fall on its own. Staring at the card, she brushed off the earlier encounter with the fortune-teller but still decided to pick the card.

In the darkness of the car, the card seemed to flash with different lights. The peculiar scene caught her attention.

Staring at the object for a while longer to confirm her theory. Instead, the card retained its dull and gloomy color. Though she could have sworn the card was luminescent some seconds ago. She turned her focus to the road to see bright orbs passing across the sky at the speed of light. They were meteors. A meteor shower.

Why was there suddenly a meteor shower? They hadn't predicted such an incident yet.

Disoriented, Kim Eun-Jung stared at the many meteors passing by. Unbeknownst to her, she hadn't noticed the large truck coming her way. As she drew her eyes from the sky and back to the road, she knew she couldn't escape her tragic end and once again she saw the card brightly light before she had a loud deafening bang that consumed her existence and took her away from consciousness.

Waking up

Voices could be heard from Kim Eun-Jung's position. The echos grew louder with each passing minute. This made the girl who was closing her eyes uncomfortable. She wanted to scream at them to be quiet. As the voices grew, her consciousness kept slipping away.

"We can't draw any more blood out of her. If we do so she'll die, she's already in a terrible state to say," one male voice tried to reason.

"I don't care, she's in this state because she deserves it. She's hurt my Kim Ju-Won, she should pay with her life," the adamant voice bellowed back, detest in his voice.

What were they talking about?

Kim Eun-Jung's mind filtered the noise from her ears, creating a ringing in them. She felt tired and drained. Her body ached all-over. She could feel herself losing consciousness.

Time had passed before she could feel herself gain a sense of her surroundings. Her eyes felt too heavy to open, her head was throbbing. She tried against her will to open her eyes and grasp her surroundings, but her will was set resolute to not do so.

The girl's struggles dimmed as she heard footsteps closing in on her. She stopped concentrating on the figure close to her. This time a female voice spoke.

"Eun-Jung, you foolish and pathetic creature. You thought you could steal Yoon Min-Hyuk from me," she paused to let out a menacing chuckle, then continued, "you were so wrong, Min-Hyuk is mine and only mine."

Kim Eun-Jung lying on the hospital bed was even more clueless. What was this person talking about? Min-Hyuk? This name sounds familiar.

"I almost feel sad for your stupidity," she let out another cynical laugh, and then she got closer to the bed. "But it's fine. You are dead now and I killed you."

Killed her? What did she mean? Was she supposedly dead?

Kim Eun-Jung felt her head begin to throb again, this time with more pain than the last. She wanted to cry out for help. However, her vocal codes were constrained, and no sound could come out from her. She felt herself slipping out of reality as darkness engulfed her.

Wandering back and forth out of the dark void that seemed to consume her, Kim Eun-Jung felt a light that gave her sense. The girl could feel herself gaining life, her eyes flung open and in an instant rays of light assaulted her eyes, making her squint them. She was lying on a cold metallic surface and from her feet to head she was covered in a white sheet.

She was naked. Kim Eun-Jung removed the cloth that restrained her body and sight. The first thing she felt was the cold air hitting her skin, causing her body to form goosebumps. The pungent smell of formaldehyde, commonly known as formalin caught her nose. Her eyes surveyed her surroundings. Next to her, more metallic beds were on view with more sheets that covered what she could only guess were bodies laid.

A morgue. She was in a morgue.

How was she in a morgue? Did they think she was dead? Kim Eun-Jung dragged her feet from the trolley, hanging them in the air as she made contact with the cold floor. She stumbled, almost falling to the ground, but caught herself, balancing her weight on the metallic structure.

Taking her time to adjust her weight on her feet, the girl pulled the white cover and wrapped it around her body. She slowly moved her legs, her eyes fixed on the exit. She was confused. She felt alive and well. Why did she end up in a place of the dead? Which hospital was she in? They can't be this neglectful.

Trapped in her mind, Kim Eun-Jung hadn't noticed the two figures walking her way. Seeing her, one of the two let out a loud ear-splitting scream. The other fear definite in his eyes. They were embalmers. They looked like they had seen a ghost. Did they really think she was dead?

"Calm down, I'm not dead," she took a step forward, approaching. Her voice was low but firm. She tried to reason. However, their reaction was not as she presumed. More fear rose in them, making one drop down unconscious. The female, seeing her partner defenseless against what she thought of as an evil spirit, pushed the girl in front, making Kim Eun-Jung stumble. This time, she was not strong enough to balance herself and fell, hitting her head on the wall. Instantly she lost realty.

In the H-City hospital, doctors stood examining the girl that was lying on the hospital bed. Her face was white, her skin delicate, she seemed like a feeble flower. She looked carefree and peaceful. As if she hadn't just been dead and somehow miraculously woken up.

A few hours ago, when the nurse frantically came to them screaming for help, claiming that there was a ghost in the morgue. No one had taken her seriously. Some few doctors even disregarded her words, saying that she had been exhausted and, due to it, she had started to experience hallucinations.

It wasn't after she cried out, making a scene and scaring some patients did they decide to hear her out. Her frantics, led them to the two bodies sprawled on the floor. One, they could tell, was a fellow staff member of the hospital. Howbeit, the other body caught their attention in an instant. One of the doctors who had been involved in her case came forward, getting closer to her form. He bent to take her pulse.

Unlike before when her body was cold, her hands felt warm and what most surprised him was the strength of her pulse. They throbbed with such vigor that indicated longevity. But how was this so? He clearly remembered her body going cold.

The doctor examining Kim Eun-Jung affirmed to the other doctors, making them exclaim in wonder. Never had such an occurrence happened where the dead rose. This must have been a scientific discovery. Some kind of breakthrough.

Immediately they took her, and did some more tests on her. Each one of them was positive. Her heart rate was steady, her bones, none of them were as before. With this, the professionals found themselves grouping in her ward conversing amongst themselves.

"Should we let her family know?" One of the doctors asked the head dean.

The dean glanced at the poor girl lying on the bed. Unlike the others, he had an idea of the kind of life Kim Eun-Jung had been going through. Seeing her about to awake, he shook his head, no and spoke, "It can wait."

Once again, she found herself grabbing the thin line of consciousness. This time the throbbing in her head was slightly less painful than before. She slowly opened her eyes, trying to adjust to the lighting of her surroundings. The air was rich, no smell of formalin. She was out of the morgue. That was a relief.

Turning her head, Kim Eun-Jung met the group of doctors who eyed her like some kind of crazy specimen. They watched her in anticipation, a glint of something she could not read in their eyes. She was in a hospital room.

Confused by their gathering, she managed to ask, "Where am I?"

"Miss Kim Eun-Jung, you are at the H-City hospital. Do you remember what happened?"

H-City hospital? Wasn't this the hospital in her novel? Kim Eun-Jung knew she was in a car accident. She was about to speak when memories bombarded her brain. Memories she knew didn't belong to her.

In them, she could see herself on top of a building together with another girl. She was beautiful. Nevertheless, she knew better than to trust appearances. Her eyes, her eyes were sinister. A fake smile plastered on her face.

Kim Eun-Jung had been scared. She looked down to see a young man standing below them with fear in his eyes.

Angrily he shouted, "Kim Eun-Jung, you better not harm my Ju-Won or I will not spare you!"

Kim Eun-Jung could feel his detest for her in every word he said. Except before she could justify herself, she was pushed and they both fell, her together with the one that instigated the whole crime.

Kim Ju-Won.

Transmigrated into the book

Kim Eun-Jung froze.

The name was all too familiar personally to her and to her memories. Images she knew were not her own flooded her brain, making her experience every single emotion she knew was not hers.

A tear slipped by involuntarily due to the roller-coaster of emotions that now settled within her. Every single grievance she felt made her heart ache. This was a foreign feeling. All her life, Kim Eun-Jung has been busy either studying or doing something related to her studies. She had never been free to do what others did, her life and memories had all been work-related.

Never had she experienced all those memories that now settled in her head. Kim Eun-Jung knew that the memories were not hers. All these scenes, she knew happened. They did happen because she was the author. She wrote them in her book Sparkles of love and the memories she held weren't the protagonist's. They belonged to Kim Eun-Jung, the antagonist of her novel.

This realization sent a cold chill down her spine. She turned her head to look up at the elderly man in front. She recognized him from memories she knew didn't exactly belong to her. He was the dean of H-City hospital.

Her face serious and voice cold, she asked, "Which city is this?"

The girl wanted to know if it were as she had assumed, then the answer would be-

"Cheol City."

With the doctor's words, her body went rigid. She knew her hypothesis was right. She was indeed in the novel. Kim Eun-Jung had transmigrated into her own book.

From her memories, she could tell that the last scene she had experienced was exactly as she had edited in her draft. That is, except in her novel, originally the antagonist had fallen off the building and died, but that was before she edited the draft. In her newly edited draft, the two had not yet gotten into the building. So how had the antagonist died?

Holding her head, she recalled a scene where she felt someone push her. It was Kim Ju-Won, the female protagonist who had pushed her off. To save herself, she tried to reach out to the female lead, who also inexplicably ended up falling off.

How was it possible that she had gotten into her own book?

What she remembered from memories of her own was her encounter with the fortune-teller. Kim Eun-Jung recalled her handing her the death card, then she left, heading to her car. After that, she felt the sudden change in the air and the card glowing. She also thought of the meteor shower before her collision with the truck. Might all those occurrences be the reason for her transmigration?

The dean, keen, noticed her distressed look. Immediately, he dismissed the board to give the girl some space. After they had left, the older man walked closer to the girl, a little worried about her.

"How long have I been passed out?" She inquired, looking at the doctor.

"You weren't just passed out, you were dead," he spoke slowly, hoping he wouldn't scare the child.

"I was dead, for how long?" Kim Eun-Jung asked, wanting l to know the timeline she had been knocked out.

"About two weeks and a day now," uttering his own words, the dean couldn't believe them. He was talking to a resurrected person. But how?

Fifteen days she was dead. The girl lifted her hands, her fair skin had bruises caused by damage to the skin tissue due to injection or piercing. Kim Eun-Jung knew by the marks, they had drawn blood out of her. Images of times she'd donated blood for the Kim family resonated in her head. This wasn't the first time. With the memories, she could feel her heart shutter, but she wasn't the kind to show her emotions. She remained unfazed.

"What about the Kim family?"

The dean halted, unsure of how to answer. The Kim family did not even bat an eye after she was pronounced dead. Would they care now that she was alive? Under her scrutiny, the old man knew she read him like an open book. She could see through his visage.

Of course, they didn't care. After finding out about her death, they didn't want anything to do with her. The patriarch had even asked the hospital to dispose of the body. They had Kim Ju-Won, their long-lost precious heiress.

The dean couldn't do it. He couldn't just improperly dispose of her body. The dean, due to his past relations with her, stalled a bit as he contemplated preparing a proper send-off.

In her mind, she tried to think. Where was she going to go? She knew no one around. Of course, she didn't. This was Cheol, a make-up city she'd just randomly thought of before adding it to her novel. Kim Eun-Jung did know though that she had to find a way through, she couldn't stay with those green-eyed people that used and tossed her aside immediately after using her.

She was now part of the plot. Kim Eun-Jung knew if she weren't careful, her fate would just be the same as the original owner's, the real character. She didn't want to end up dying in her own novel. It had to change, her plot had to change.

The girl contemplated where she would stay after her discharge. It would be unreasonable to keep on staying at H-City hospital. Thinking for a while, a long thought popped into her head, this was something she hadn't exactly pinpointed on before. If she recalled correctly, it was in the same hospital that the original owner of the body was born before she was swapped at birth.

So, the hospital probably had details of the original owner's parents. When she was writing her novel Sparkels of love, she had not majored more on the female antagonist as the novel was mostly about the two protagonists, Kim Ju-Won and Yoon Min-Hyuk. To think of it, she had never really added any details about the antagonist's birth parents. She had to find them if they existed.

Kim Eun-Jung's thoughts were disrupted by someone clearing his throat. She looked up to see that the doctor was still in the room. He looked at her still a little baffled, the young mistress's demeanor seemed to have changed, she was now composed and spoke little.

"Doctor, can I get details about the other women aside from Nam Jang-Mi?" she asked.

The dean looked at her astounded. This was actually the first time he heard the girl call her adoptive mother by her name. He knew who she was referring to, she referred to the Lady of the Kim family. However, what he took an interest in was her first words. She wanted a record from seventeen years ago.

Privately, the dean had also wondered, but she hadn't dared to dwell his thoughts there. He wasn't one to poke his nose. Nonetheless, it didn't mean he wouldn't. The girl was born seventeen years ago and due to a mishap, the hospital switched the two newborns. That was a mistake that had never occurred before. Because of that, he, together with the hospital, were indebted to the Kim family and the unknown family that was Eun-Jung's family.

I'll arrange it for you," he promised earnestly.

His words made Kim Eun-Jung genuinely smile. He was the only one who truly cared about her. If only there was a way to get him out of Kim Beom-seok's grasp.

After the encounter, the head dean decided it was best to leave the girl to herself.

For someone like her, accepting such scenarios was totally unbelievable. This time she didn't think it was only her. Anyone who would be in her place, she was sure, would never make sense of this. Kim Eun-Jung took a deep breath, leaning back in the comfort of the bed her mind made up. She was not going to suffer the fate of her character. Kim Eun-Jung was not going to let anybody bully her. She was going to fight back.
