" When is she going to wake up?" Ms. Doltman asked as she watched her only daughter, lying on a hospital bed.
" I'm sorry Mrs. Doltman, but I don't know. What I do know is that she'll appreciate it if you are here when she does" the doctor responded.
Ms. Doltman nodded silently, holding back her tears as she asked," Why would she do that?"
Pollina's eyes slowly flutter open to see what seemed to be a doctor and a woman standing near her. Her voice strained as she managed to say, " Excuse me, do you know where I am?"
The doctor turned to Pollina, who lay limply on the bed and said in a low gentle voice, " Hello Pollina, my named is Dr. Martyr and you are currently at the hospital. Do you know why your here?"
Pollina's head ached and feeling the pain, she reached up and touched the spot only to find something wrapped around the area.
" My head hurts." Pollina said as she feel around her head only to be stopped by the doctor who said, " Please don't touch around your head, you have been injured there. Alright Pollina?"
" Alright" She replied softly.
" Pollina can I ask you a question?"
" Alright" Pollina agreed hesistantly
" The day before yesterday you tried to commit suicide. Can you tell me why?" Dr. Martyr asked softly.
Pollina's body began to shake as she looked at the doctor confused. Her gaze the fell to her wrist that has dark slashes running horizontally along it and higher up on her wrist was bandaged up. There was also bruising on her wrist and upper arms. She looked back at Dr. Martyr as she finally said," I... I don't know.... I don't remember"
Tears whelmed up in her eyes as she said again," I don't remember"
She reached up and touched what she now realize a bandaged injury that was probably self-inflicted as she asked," I...I tried to kill myself?"
" Alright Pollina, it's ok. You probably don't remember because you suffered a severe head injury" Dr. Martyr said but that didn't seem to calm her down.
Pollina's breathing was short and quick and her heart was beating in her ears. What is this? Is she dying? These were all questions she asked herself as her chest from the pain. The blood pressure monitor began going off as gasped for air.
Dr. Martyr kneeled down next to her breaking her focus from her aching chest as he said," Pollina, can you look at me?"
" I'm dying" Pollina said, the tears now trickling down her face.
" No, you're not. I need you to take deep breaths for me" the doctor said.
" I... I can't" Pollina insisted.
" Yes you can, just follow what I'm doing" The doctor suggested before saying," Deep breath"
He sucked some air into his mouth and held his breath for 5 seconds before releasing it. He repeated this until she stopped clutching her chest and began crying. Her mother ran to comfort her holding her hand but not standing taller or hugging her tightly just incase she feels cornered.
Noticing this Dr. Martyr questioned," Mrs. Doltman, have this happened before?"
Ms. Doltman nodded silently, looking at her daughter sympathetically. So imagine her surprise when Pollina pulled her into a hug as she cried.
" I'll leave you two alone for a few. You can just prest that button if anything happens." Dr. Martyr stated as he left.
A few hours later, Dr. Martyr came to check on Pollina, only to find her peacefully sleeping. Her mom was still by her side with her hands wrapped around her daughter as she watched her. Ms. Doltman suddenly turned around to see Dr.Martyr signalling her to come outside which she did.
The first thing Dr. Martyr said was," I know this is a very difficult thing to suggest but can I do a colposcopy exam. Its a procedure where we check the cervix for any damage." Dr. Martyr asked.
" Why is that exam necessary?" Ms. Doltman questioned.
" When the first responders came they noticed bruising in her mouth, upper arms and wrist which can be signs that she was forced to do something she didn't consent to" Dr. Martyr replied in a very slowly and in a gentle tone
" You mean, you think she was... raped"
".....Yes" Dr. Martyr responded.
" Oh, ok." Ms. Doltman murmured as she sat back onto a chair, tears beading in her eyes.
Dr. Martyr called a nurse to ask Dr. Reiss to do the exam as he stayed here and comforted Ms. Doltman. Soon Mrs. Doltman found herself reminiscing the days when Pollina was younger. Her husband and Pollina used stick together like glue. Wherever he goes she would follow. She even almost followed him to work but was caught by Mrs. Doltman who lectured her about the dangers of the outside world. After all she was very young. Ms. Doltman found herself smiling remember all the troubled that father and daughter got into.
" Are they not close anymore, your daughter and husband?" Dr. Martyr asked.
" Oh...um...they still are. He died when she was 8 years old. Even though she acted like such a child around him she was very mature for her age. She knew what I meant when I told her he was gone." Ms. Doltman said
" Oh...., I'm sorry for your lost and for calling you Mrs. Doltman." Dr. Martyr said
" Oh no don't be. I honestly didn't even notice and sometimes it's actually nice to hear that. It reminds me that I was once his and he, mines." Ms. Doltman announced, her voice slowly becoming softer and softer towards it's ending.
" Do you also have children Doctor?" Ms Doltman questioned.
" Yes. Twins actually. A boy and a girl." Dr. Doltman replied smiling as he clicked the power button on his phone to show his two children on his locked screen. The girl and boy smiled brightly in the picture.
" What would you do it this were to happen to them?" Ms. Doltman inquired.
Dr. Martyr didn't say anything for a while before he gave an unsatisfactory answer of," I don't know"
