After Dusk: What Lies Unseen

Episode 1 How it all Began

When the day is over and the night nears, the doorway to the dark, the Dusk, appears. At

the dusk, you see all the colors fade away from the world. The light becomes

colorless. Have you wondered... what the color of the world would be if we saw

it without the light? What we would see other than what we see in the light?

Well, that's what I and my friends wanted to find out.

Some 3-4 years ago, I had this thought, what can we see if we perceive without the

light. they say the dogs and other creatures can see the supernatural. So...

does that mean that they can see something we cannot see? I called on some

friends of mine, with whom I worked with all my teenage and college years.

Matty, or Matt Keaton, was known for his techies. His parents claim that he started

building electronics when he was in secondary school. He is also the best

gadget guy I know. Then there is Zee or Rayz North. She did not like the old name

that her parents gave her, Rays. She said that it made her look

"girly". She is a stereotypical tomboy and a minor delinquent. She is

into heavy machinery. She can design and construct a machine for any given

purpose. She once created a machine that can create a perfect pizza from base

ingredients and then feed her. Did I mention the minor delinquent part?

Finally, Rover or Rover Carlson. A bit of a nerd but a good friend. She has a

big social interactivity problem. Yes, a bit of a handful, but god is she

helpful when you want something. She is a "Genius". I still don't

know what is in her brain, but she has the best memory power and knowledge that

one might think that she is a supercomputer. I told them my idea and we

came up with many theories.

By around the beginning of the fall, we started to test out our theory. Rover said that they

could build a lightless chamber that can let a person see in the dark using special

equipment. After a week of planning, Rayz started building a lightless chamber

that prevented sound and light from entering. Matt came up with the idea that we

should build something like a house rather than a  chamber so that they can test in a familiar

condition. After months of testing the construction of the house was done. The

house was perfectly sound and light proof.  Matt said, “This is perfect. Now we can do our

tests in this house”.

It was now the middle of summer. All we had to do now was start building the Void Polarisation

and Digitalizing Device or Void Device for short. At the start, the device did

not have much to it. It was a special polarized glass that let every other

light but the visible to pass through. Now we needed to see. We planed and planed

and finally we created a perfect blueprint for the device that could overlay

all the invisible spectrum to the screen. At first, the images were very static-like.

Later on, the images started to come clearer and clearer. Finally, we managed

to fix the visibility problem. We made a night vision imaging with other invisible

spectrum overlayed on the infrared images.

When Things Began Working

We started seeing some figures in the black and white images of the night vision camera. But the figures were not very clear. We couldn’t figure out what we were seeing. After 2 months of fruitless research and planning, One day Rover decided to end the results through an EMF. I don’t know why but we got some unexpected results. We were hard at work when Rover came downstairs running, She was just crying out, “guys, guys look, look!!”. It was rare seeing Rover so excited.

When we reached rover she showed us a screen recording. Yes! This was it. We finally made it. We saw what could not be seen. We did some experiments until late that day. When it was about the late evening when Matt said this question, What do we call that what lies unseen? Spirits? Ghosts? And what do we call the World of the unseen? At first, Matt came up with some stupid names like “the beyond” or “ the Void” but then Rover said a name that we accepted, the Parareal, that’s what we decided to call it. And the figures, the Dwellers.

At first, we only saw small round gray figures. Like fireflies, but with different sizes. Some small as a spec of dust and some the size of a cuticle of the thumb. We learned how these dwellers worked. They are usually small round figures that float around. The smaller ones rarely seem to combine with the biggest ones. Maybe the bigger ones are consuming smaller ones to become bigger. We still don’t know. Rover usually sat and watched the figures move around. We were pretty sure that Rover was just Charecterising them.

This made us want more. We wanted to feel them. They obviously existed in the same space as us. So, we opened the house we made for the first time after we set up the equipment in the house. The first try was just touching them directly without any equipment, just hands. They seemed to move through us. They cannot be touched. Makes sense. So we need something related to an EMF that in the first place made the Dwellers known to us. So, Matt and I began working on something like gloves that can touch the Dwellers while Rover and Zee continued characterizing them.

I think we finished the work on the gloves by mid-fall. We started the final tests right after. First, we wanted to know what it would feel like when we touch it. But the first test result came out pretty disappointing. The Dwellers did not want to be touched. So we decided to send someone into the chamber/house. Zee actually volunteered. What happened then also was disappointing but beautiful. As Zee entered the chaimber all Dwellers started to move towards her and surround her. The Dwellers as they touched Zee’s hands disintegrated into a cloud. We now knew that they could not be touched. Then next we wanted to know if we could capture the Dwellers. Not out of ill intent but just out of curiosity. After all we didn’t know if they had feelings or even sense. We knew that they could sense us.

Episode 3 When We Went Knocking

On the weekend before Christmas, we started the construction of EMF cages, we later called Bubbles, to hold at least one of them. By this time, we had already figured that we can manipulate the smaller ones with EMFs. On the day before Christmas Eve, we kept a trap to capture at least one of the Dwellers. We used a specially designed ERPD (Emitter Receiver Photosensor Diode) setup, which basically worked when anything that is in one light spectrum but not present in any other light spectrums is detected in the camera set up the trap will go off.

On Christmas Day, we four went out for celebrating Christmas. It has been 1 year and 6 months now since we had a proper vacation. We really did enjoy the week-long holiday. We traveled, drank, danced, sang, played in the snow, and a lot more. What we did not know at that time was that that was the last time we will ever enjoy something fun ever again. To be honest the result we got was not what we wanted.

We went back to our lab after the week of fun. What we saw was nothing we never have seen before. The “thing” inside the cage was a fist-sized white blob with an appendage or a tail similar to a tadpole. Before that, all we saw was small gray balls the size of a cuticle.

We took the bubble out and set it on a table inside the house with the help of some mechanical hands set up inside the house. This time we all went into the house. We already had a setup similar to a VR headset with the Void Device rigged onto the front of it. As we went in we were greeted by a very foul smell that felt similar to the smell of rotting flesh and ammonia. We were curious about what caused this smell if the chamber was closed off from to the outside world. This led us toward the table with the Bubble. Why? What inside the Bubble is causing the smell? As we got closer we saw it. The beginning of everything. The Dweller inside the Bubble was much more visible to

us than the other Dwellers we have been familiar with.

We used Matt's phone to see the stream from the ERDP sensor that we set up. What we saw was… was very creepy. The images saw multiple Dwellers being trapped in the Bubble. Then one of the smaller Dwellers

gradually became whiter and whiter every time it hit the Bubble walls and finally stopped at a bright white stage. It also seemed to have formed a mouth. Then it went ballistic and started to consume all the other Dwellers. When we

first saw the bigger Dwellers consume the smaller ones it wasn’t as violent as what we saw in the display now. This was horrible. The new Dweller attacked the other ones including the few larger ones, throwing pieces of the others in the confines of the bubble. It shook the ones it had in its mouth and threw bits of the smaller ones everywhere. As it consumed all the other Dwellers in the cage, it became bigger and bigger. Now we understood what the cause of the smell was, Dead Dwellers. Or so we thought.
