Sour Seventeenth

The world is full of endless amounts of corruption and evil, but humanity still attempts to purify it.

But what if after centuries of watching over earth angels finally decide to offer a helping hand?

They come to earth claiming to be capable of making all of our troubles disappear, presenting world peace on a silver platter.

All they want in return is to be able to walk among us. But what if they have hidden motives and all is not what it seems..

**

The alarm blared, indicating the start of yet another day.

Wiping the sleep from her eyes she sat up and stretched her aching muscles. When her vision became clearer she sluggishly looked over to her alarm. Excitement flooded over her as she faught to get the blanket from off her.

Stumbling out of bed she nearly tripped, toppling over the mountains of sketch books scattered over her bedroom floor. Darting across the room towards her calendar she threw herself at the wall. Unable to contain her excitement, her unsteady finger skimmed along the dates till it landed on May 12th.

"IT'S MY BIRTHDAYYY" she squealed excitedly.

Not bothering to change from her grey shorts and dreadfully oversized ACDC top, she practically flew down the stairs and rocketed into the front room "Muuum? Daaaad?"

She checked each room of the house and even looked in the back garden. 'huh, where are they?' she thought to herself.

Reluctantly she went to check the last possible place in the house, the garage. Sticking her head through the door she confirmed her doubts. 'No car. Great, they're still not back'.

Instinctively she pulled out her phone and scrolled down to her mums number. Five tones later she finally picked up, followed by the deafening sound of music and chaos.

"Mum..?" Trying to block out the music she could faintly hear an inaudible voice. "Mum I can't hear you"

The music started to get slightly quieter, now becoming muffled echoing in the background "Hiya sweetie! What's up?"

"Where are you? I thought dad said you'd both be back by today"

"I know. I knoww" she said still needing to shout overtop of the ever growing noise "It's just.. me and your father were offered two free tickets to fly to Australia, first class! It's not something you can pass up hun. This could be crucial for the success of your fathers company. You're also a big girl now, I thought you'd be okay by yourself for a few more weeks" 'Typical. She didn't even sound the slightest bit apologetic that she wasn't here for her own daughter's eighteenth birthday'.

"But you promised.." she could feel the irritation crawl up her spine, "you said this year would be different. You and dad both promised me.."

"Come on now Willow, stop being so selfish. You should be happy for us honneyyy, we are finally living out our dream to travel. Besidess, you only live once!" she paused for a second, obviously preoccupied by something 'or better yet someone' "We'll be back before you know it! I promise."

*She couldn't decide whether she wanted to cry or scream. The only thing that left her mouth was a scoff 'I can't believe this*. They're always promising me things and expecting everything to turn out alright when they break it. They're hardly ever around. It's like they can't stand being around me.'

Ever since the angels came to earth sixteen years ago most of the worlds population have lived in harmony, this was mainly due to the fact the adults were granted their dream jobs and careers. As the saying goes "money makes the world go round" and money brings happiness and what does happiness create? Harmony.. at least that was their logic. However, there are those who distrust the angels. Dad would call them morons, delusional idiots 'who would pass up an opportunity to have their dream handed to them on a silver platter?' he'd say. Most of those people work the jobs no one else wants, some of them are rumoured to have gone underground and banded together in an attempt to overthrow the angels.

"And look on the brightside!" She carried on "You have the whole house to yourself, isn't that every teenagers dream?" 'Yeah for a weekend, not for their whole life..' "oh and before I forget, we left you're birthday present on the dining room table"

"Okay," she tried to sound happy and not like she was fighting the urge to cry "have fun in Australia! ..take some pictures for me?"

"Of course sweetie" she sounded distracted again, "love you, bye"

"By-" the phone hung up before she could finish. "And the parents of the year award goes tooo. Drum roll pleaase.. Mr and Mrs Woods! Woowho".

Throwing her phone onto the counter she huffed loudly, catching a glimspe of her reflection she turned to meet it. "Looks like it's just you and me again"

In the dinning room she wandered over to the table where a single unlit chocolate cupcake sat next to £50 and a leathered drawing pad. "Typical" she scoffed.

Picking at the cupcake she decided to pull herself together and not waste her birthday moping about. Instead she would take herself to Burger Bill's fast food and restaurant and treat herself to a birthday meal.

Bill's was the only place her parents would let her go out to by herself, meaning it was the only place she got to be around people. Not her stacks of artbooks or reflection.

Actual living people.

Willow has always been homeschooled.. if you count homeschooling as being left home alone week after week. Her parents rarely come home unless they need to repack, which is basically once every two ot three months if completely and utterly necessary.

Growing up, her teachers were anything she could watch on tv or find on her phone.

- Don't answer the door for strangers.

- Don't answer the phone unless it's us.

- Always lock up.

- Don't go out to anywhere but Bill's down the road.

These were their rules.

However, the last one never really stuck. She found she loved the forest, climbing the crisp autumn trees and building dens, playing with the wildlife, seeing firsthand the beauty of what the world had to offer and drawing it.

But mum and dad never had to find out, it was her little secret.

**

When she got to Bills she walked over to her usual seat lifting herself onto the black leathered bar stool, spinning herself around to the bar and pulling out a large sketchbook from her rucksack.

The rays of sun escaping from behind the trees on the opposite side of the road shined in through the restaurants windows. Every so often, a small gust of wind would push her wavy blonde hair into her face, temporarily blinding her view from her drawing. A couple minutes later, she frustratingly tied the long unruly hair into a messy ponytail.

She heard plates clanging from somewhere in the back room. The place was practically empty, only Bill would be up this early.

"Goodmorning Billyyy!" she chimmed happily.

From the kitchen came out a big, beefy man with an unruly beard covering any hint of a neck. He wore an apron that did no justice for his figure and on his shoulder he carried an unappealing dirty brown towel. However, what lacked in physical features was made up by with personality. Everytime Willow visited he'd wear a massive smile on his face, cracking jokes to customers and offering top notch advice. Coming around to the bar front, he stopped in front of her throwing the towel down onto the table. "What can I do for you today lil lady"

"hmm, how abo-"

"-wait wait, lemme guess. Pancakes topped with an immense amount of honey, berries and cream, french toast and a large hot chocolate?"

"with extra cream and marshmallows" she plead, ".. wait, have I become that predictable?"

"afraid so" he chuckled, walking back into the kitchen. "So, big seventeen huh?" he shouted through the door.

"yep, I'm practically an adult now. Next year I can even officially move out!"

"What, you don't enjoy living with your parents?" he teased.

She laughed. 'If only he knew..'

Stranger Danger

It was a while before Bill came out balancing two trays of food. Struggling to set them down in front of her he settled for awkwardly sliding them across the countertop. She could see the wave of relief wash over him as he took a step back to calm down. "Still not got the hang of waitressing huh?" she teased, clearly enjoying the mans frustration.

"It would be a lot easier if both my waitresses didn't quit on me"

Filling her mouth to the brim she spate out "Can you blame them? They had to work eight hours a day for terrible pay and a boss that overworked them"

In mock disbelief he took an overexaggerted gasp "Well I happen to think I'm an amazing boss" he had to pause to admire the girl sat in front of him. "I don't get how such a small person can eat such large quantities of food, where the hell does it all go?"

"What can I say, I'm blessed"

"That you are" he said twirling her sketchbook around to face him, "and look at this! You seriously don't want to take art up professionally?"

She struggled to talk through a mouthful of pancake, "Really? I could do that?"

"Yeah! With this level of talent I'm pretty sure any business will take you on, you could get paid serious money for just drawing a logo"

"You're kidding right? I might have to look into that"

"Do it, you could even be the next Picasso!" he joked.

She giggled, "now that's a little extreme don't you think"

"I wouldn't know, best I can draw is a stickman" he shrugged closing the book and turning it back round to her. "But you have a talent Willow, don't waste it", he said walking towards a customer.

After scoffing down the whole meal within minutes Willow paid the bill and headed out towards the forest.

Stepping outside she was immediately soothed, something about smelling the fresh forest air, hearing the leaves crunch under her feet and birds chirp in the distance, feeling the wind gently brush across her exposed skin. She let her body go into autopilot, shutting off her mind and letting her legs take charge.

At some point she had decided to climb to the top of a giant pine tree, because when she came back to her senses she was over looking the whole forest. All around her she could see trees and blue sky. In the distance she could make out the top of her secluded house. Barely.

It was weird. Even consciously knowing she was up this high her body refused to except it. The beautiful view distracted her from thinking about her crushing fear of heights.

She reached round into her bag and carefully pulled out her sketchbook. Sitting perched she sat there quietly singing to herself drawing a landscape of the scenery around her.

After she finished she decided to stay, watching the sun set. Just long enough to see the first star appear. Jumping down from each branch was easy, she felt like a gymnast.. or possibly a monkey. 'Probably both'. It hadn't even occured to her that her hands were shaking viciously from fear.

**

When she reached home it was pitch black out and her legs ached like hell. 'Damn Willow, you really went and wasted your seventeenth birthday like that'.

Locking up the house she made a B line for the kitchen, "how did I go for so long without feeding you?" she said rubbing her stomach, talking to it as if it were a baby, "what should we eat.. hmm".

After scavenging through all the cupboards a trillion times, she decided on pepperoni pizza. While it was cooking in the oven she ran upstairs to take a well deserved shower.

**

The shower knob screached as she turned it on. Ice cold water greeted her hand, sending shock waves through her entire body. It'd take a while before it heated up so she turned to her phone flicking through her spotify playlist, music began to echo off the bathrooms tiles. A couple minutes later she stripped and entered the shower, the hot water greated her skin washing away the soreness in her aching muscles.

She sang passionately, dancing along to the music. A performance she'd deamed oscar worthy, all thoughts of washing were out the window. It was only when a loud thud from her bedroom followed by a deep male voice that tore her away from her music. "oh- for fucks sake!" the voice cursed repeatedly.

Alert. Fear filled her body as she stood frozen under the heat of the shower. Adrenalin started rapidly pumping through her veins as she began to panick. 'What do I do? What do I do!?'.

She reached for her phone, switching it on a battery alert popped up '15% that's okay, just call 999 tell them your address and the situation. That's all I need to do. Easy. We got this, just last 3 more minut-' all of a sudden the screen went black. "shit!" she whispered, "bloody stupid iphone battery life"

Assessing her options she turned the shower off as discreetly as possible and pulled a towel over her dripping body. Tip toeing towards the bathroom door she grabbed the closest thing in reach and opened the door. Continuing on towards her bedroom.

*The house fell deafeningly silent, the only noise coming from her own heavy breathing. 'I'm so going to die, I'm so going to die*' she kept chanting to herself. 'Calm down Willow and think, what would they do if this was a crime drama?'

Slowly she entered her room, her hand blindly reached out for the light switch. Flicking it on she scanned the space around.

*Nothing. The only thing misplaced was a pile of her books toppled over next to the window. Walking over to take a closer look she stopped to inspect the windowsill, no signs of a break in. Nothing out of the ordinary.. 'maybe I was just hearing things*? Oh please tell me I was just hearing things'.

Just as she was about to turn around and head back to the shower, she felt a warm breathe tickle the right side of her neck, its hair immediately stood on end. Squealing. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut and twisted herself around so she was face to face with the intruder, without a second thought she started kicking and punching in that general direction.

It felt like punching solid bags of flour, she continued to attack with her eyes glued closed. Almost sounding bored he put a stop to the pathetic attacks "Alright. That's enough of that tiny, you're gonna hurt yourself" suddenly she felt her whole body being lifted up and thrown down on somethings soft '.. my bed?'

She opened her eyes to see the intruder. To her surprise it was a guy.. he looked the same age as her, if not older. He wore baggy black jeans and a simple black shirt which stretched over his muscles, the whole outfit complimenting his strikingly dark features: jet black hair which fell messily over his forehead, dark red eyes.. no now they were a deep brown and pale olive skin sprinkled with freckles. His right arm was covered in a sleeve of tattoos which went right from his knuckles to his jawline.

He towered over her, intimidating her with his height. Suddenly a series of questions flew through her mind 'Shit shit shit shit shit How did he get inside the house?? how was be able to throw me on the bed without touching me? am i imagining things??' He smirked at the distressed girl, almost like he could hear her thoughts. She tried to calm herself down to the point she could think logically about what to do, he started moving towards her, a cold hard look in his eyes.

Urgently trying to remember the fighting techniques she'd learned from youtube over the past couple of years, she did the first thing which came to mind. With one swift and a powerful hit she successfully kneed the intruder in between his legs. As he fell to the floor trying to catch his breathe, she took the opportunity to run like hell. "******* hell. H-hey come ba-back here" he said between rugged, painful breathes.

Ignoring him, she blindly grabbed a few random clothes and darted down the stairs through the house past the kitchen. Stopping herself mid run 'the pizza!', she quickly opened the oven and juggled the hot pizza in her hands sprinting out the door into the woods.

Hide And Seek

Certain there was enough distance between her and the intruder, she stopped to catch her breathe and tried to piece together a plan.

Looking through the items she'd picked up she sighed, realising she'd only taken her oversized ACDC top and the pizza. "I can't catch a break can I"

"I guess it beats running around ***** in a flimsy towel" she mumbled to herself, "stupid intruder, making me leave MY house on MY birthday and making me forget my phone! ughh this day cannot get any worse"

".. shoot. Now I've jinxed it"

After having a mini tantrum and kicking multiple rocks with her bare feet she got dressed, using the towel to dry as much of her damp hair as possible, abandoning it behind the tree when she finished.

"At least I have you my precious baby, you're the only one I can trust now" she said cradling the pizza in both arms.

**

An hour passed, her feet were killing her and the clouds above her rumbled. She knew she needed to call the police but she'd stupidly left her phone in her bathroom and to be honest.. she was having trouble navigating where she was. At this point, she wasn't even certain where she'd come from. Everything looked so similar at night..

And creepy.

In the distance she saw two bright lights. She let out a sigh of relief, "finally, civilisation".

Heading towards the lights it became clearer it was not street lights, but instead the lights of a black scratched up pickup truck.

Getting closer she squinted her eyes, trying to make out whether or not there was a driver. But when she got to the car door to look in..

It was empty.

'huh.. why's no one here. The keys still left in the ignition which means the driver has to be around here somewhere right?'

As if on que, she heard footsteps coming out from the woods. Spinning around she saw "Bill?", he was still wearing his work clothes and looked strangely ominous.

As soon as he saw her he stopped in his tracks, his right hand moving behind his back. His serious demeanour switching quickly into one of warmth "well hello lil lady, what are you doing all the way out here alone in the middle of the night?" he looked down questionably at her outfit.

"Oh thank god I bumped into you!" she started walking towards him, "there was an intruder in my house I didn't know what to do so I ran but I seem to be lost and I don't have my phone and I don't know where the town is from here an-"

"-woah woah, hold up. Slow down. You said there was an intruder?"

"huh? Oh right, yes he was tall, very dark featu-"

"Did he have red eyes?"

"huh?" she stopped mid step.

"Did he have red eyes?" he repeated a little more sternly.

"yes bu-"

"Did he tell you anything?" he said sterner.

"What?"

Suddenly he snapped, turning into someone unrecognisable to the sweet, light hearted Bill she knew "Did he say anything to you for christs sake!"

"no, Bill.. are you alrig-"

"Don't lie to me girl, What did he tell you?" he took a few quick steps forward, shouting now. "WHAT DID HE TELL YOU!?"

"Nothing, he didn't say anything!" she stopped in her tracks looking at him, "What's gotten into you?"

Suddenly something clicked in her mind, "Bill.. what are you doing out in the middle of the forest at midnight.. it's miles away from your restaurant.." slowly she started to cautiously back away from him.

The hand he had been holding behind his back appeared slowly at his side, in it he held a long needle full of a strange clear liquid. At the sight of it she immediantly froze, her whole body paralysed with fear. He slowly crept forward, almost savouring the terror painted on her face. All she could do was stare wide eyed at the needle as it came dangerously close to her skin.

A few steps away he stopped, tilting his head down towards the ground. Hiding his face. The eery silence only lasted a couple seconds before he quietly started cackling, it got louder and louder till suddenly he stopped. Slowly lifting his head to face her, she saw a vile smirk form from his cracked lips, his eyes were glazed over but seemingly looked directly at her. "You have no idea what you are do you? How precious you are to them"

"wha- what do you mean.."

Suddenly he pounced towards her, needle in hand. It was only at the last second that he was flung across the forest floor wheezing for air. The needle went flying in the air, landing in the overgrowth where he once stood.

Before she was able to process what had just happened, she was swooped off of her feet and shoved into the passenger seat of the car the door swiftly shut behind her. The driver's door opened and the intruder from her house jumped in. He pressed down on the gas, angering the engine they bulldozed through the forest and within seconds came to an open road.

'What the hell is happening?? Why did Bill try to inject me?? What did he mean by "you have no idea what you are"?? Who is this guy?? And most importantly why am I still in this car?!' she started panicking again.

"What the hell were you thinking?? Running off like that" he shouted angrily.

It took her a second to process what was happening "um excuse me?! Last time I checked YOU were the one who snuck into MY house! Shouldn't I be the one asking YOU questions??"

"Not my fault you left the front door unlocked" he shrugged looking at the road.

"Not your fau- What so because I didn't lock my door it gives you the right to just waltz right in unannounced into a strangers house??

"Walked"

".. what?"

"I walked in, I don't know how to waltz"

"I'm being serious!"

"So am I"

She looked at him shocked, 'how is he acting so care free? Not only did he trespass AND get caught, but he straight up threw a full grown (overweight..) man like it was nothing. Or did he throw him, it all happened so fast. Now he's acting like I'M in the wrong, what the hell is happening.
