Running along the corridors of the palace, the king of fairies could not help but worry. He could not think straight, knowing that his newly-wedded wife was on the deathbed. Terror and fear muddled his thinking as he fought back the hot tears which threatened to fall. Fate was cruel. The queen had been showing all signs of a dying fairy despite her young age. She had just been married off to the dark king of fairies. Yet, her skin was paler than usual, and most importantly, her wings had remarkably shrunk. Evy's wings were no longer the infamous majestic and feathery wings they once were. They had decreased in size and could easily go unnoticed. Zaid lost his battle against his emotions upon reaching the bedroom he shared with his queen. He failed to appear as the strong king of fairies when hot tears slowly streamed down his rosy cheeks. He was still, a young fairy, whose wife was on the brink of death. His teary eyes met hers as she lied on the floor, shaking like a leaf. Her long and messy silvery hair was scattered on the floor as she fought to keep her eyes opened.
-"EVY, MY QUEEN," Zaid fell on his knees to near his wife who was lying on the cold floor, fighting death.
-"Za-Zaid," she muttered with a shaky voice.
Evy lifted her shaky hand and gently caressed the king's moist cheek and locked her purple eyes with his bloodshot ones.
-"EVY DON'T LEAVE ME PLEASE," the king begged uncontrollably.
-"WE STILL HAVE THE FAIRYLAND TO RULE EVY," he cried and held his dying wife in his embrace.
-"li-listen to me," Evy mumbled.
-"tell me love," he said softly.
-"it... wi-will be our la-last ch-chance to-" she tried to find her voice and find her voice as a dark fog clouded her vision. Her eyelids became heavier, she felt as if her soul was trying to break off the chains which tied itself to this mesmerising body.
Fate was indeed cruel. It was too late. The queen of fairies had passed in her husband's embrace.
-"E-Evy," the king shook his head and cried on his wife's cold shoulder.
The queen's hair magically turned dark brown and her skin colour changed from snowy white to light brown. Her skin was slowly getting tanned. Slowly, she took the appearance of a human as her wings shattered into fragments.
-" EVY, YOU CANNOT LEAVE," he screamed as he hugged the now brunette tighter.
...*BEEP BEEP*...
Sebastian abruptly woke up from his tormenting dream, drenched in sweat. His breathing was unsteady, and his heart was pounding in his chest.
-"what the fuck was this dream?" he said shaking.
He reached for his phone and read the message recently sent by the landlord. The twenty - years old boy would have been thrilled to know that he would be getting a new roommate. However, he had a weird feeling about it. There was a strange knot in his stomach. It was as if a new door leading to a room of obstacles will soon be opened to him. The young boy lazily walked to the bathroom with the intention of freshening up and getting ready to welcome his new companion in the apartment. He stared at his messy wavy hair and oily face in the mirror before splashing cold water on him, trying to clear his mind.
He lifted his wet face and screamed in terror upon looking at his own reflection in the mirror and took a few steps. His hair was no longer short, dark and wavy. He now had long silvery hair which cascaded down his now pale skin and hid his pointy earlobes. His now-purple eyes widened and his pulse rate rose. He recognised the man in the mirror. It was the man from his dreams. It was Zaid. He freaked out as he had to acknowledge the fact that Zaid was now his reflection.
He took fearful steps back until he stumbled on the mat. Blinking his eyes, his foggy vision got clearer and his reflection was back to normal. It was the same usual Sebastian with messy dark hair.
-"I think am going crazy," he muttered to himself and splashed some more cold water on his face.
His head was heavy and his body was aching. After he had freshened up, the doorbell rang. He stared at the wooden door with wide eyes as the knock persisted.
-" Sebastian are you here? It's Mr. Brown," a man shouted from the other side of the door.
-"Why am I acting so weird?" he muttered, rubbing his eyes before turning the doorknob to reveal the landlord accompanied by a young lady around his age.
-"Good morning Sebastian, I present to you Aurelia, your roommate," Mr Brown lightly pushed the girl forward with a smile.
Sebastian immediately recognised the slightly tanned brunette with long brown hair falling on her hips. Her small features coincided with those of the dying woman in his dreams. He froze on the spot, with eyes filled with horror.
-"Are you okay Sebastian?" Aurelia asked with worry plastered on her face and took a few steps forward causing the man to back away.
-"HELL NO!" Sebastian exclaimed and started to slap his head in an attempt to drive his illusions away.
It took him a while to realise that the girl standing in front of him was real and not an illusion.
-"Evy?" he asked and the two concerned people looked at him, panic-strickened.
-"Who is Evy?" Mr. Brown asked, causing the cloud confusion which tormented Sebastian was slowly drift away and the young man soon snapped back to reality.
Sebastian who thought that moving out from his family of witches and sorcerers would mean that he would live and peaceful life as a simple human. Oh how he was wrong!!
Growing up Sebastian witnessed the growth of witches and sorcerers. He watched the magic awakening of all his cousins and siblings except for himself. Despite being the first-born son of the Pennysile family, a family which was notorious for engaging in witchcraft, Sebastian never had his own power awakening, unlike his younger siblings. The latter grew immensely powerful overtime. On the other hand, Sebastian acquired the name of the "powerless being". He had to tolerate the mockery and bickering of the nosy family members and the worry of his parents. The poor boy was eventually pushed over the line and found the pressure from his family to be overwhelming. He had had enough of being patient and waiting for his power awakening. Overtime he became and hopeless case and packed his bags to leave his family, with the hope of embarking a fresh start.
Life was peaceful until the day prior to Aurelia's arrival. His mother's words kept ringing in his ears.
-"when the time comes, you will come running back to us with countless questions"
...****************...
-"Who is Evy?" Aurelia asked with eyes filled with concern.
-"I will get him a glass of water," Mr Brown rushed to the kitchen, followed by Aurelia.
In the meantime, Sebastian grabbed his hair in frustration and tried to recollect his breath. After convincing himself that it was a mere coincidence, the brown haired boy strolled to the kitchen. His eyes fell on the back profile of his new roommate. Standing by the door frame his eyes traced the slender waist of the new girl. He hated to admit but loved how the tight clothes exposed her curves and well-rounded buttocks. He shrugged his thoughts off as he overheard her conversation with the landlord.
-"Are you sure that I am safe with him," she asked with a voice filled with fear.
-"what a fool I am for acting out of my mind in front of such a breathtaking girl," Sebastian muttered under his breath causing both the girl and the landlord to exchange glances and turn to him.
The boy cringe with shame upon recalling his last interactions with Aurelia. He just wished that he could turn back time and recover from this embarrassing moment.
-"hello Aurelia. Let's please forget our past encounter and start afresh. My name is Sebastian. I am pleased that I will have someone to keep me company. Allow me to show you around," Sebastian extended his hand forward.
-"You see, you have nothing to worry about. Sebastian is a nice boy," the landlord reassured the terrified lady and lifted his bag over his shoulder.
-"I am leaving you two. Goodbye young people," he said jiggling the keys before handing them over to Aurelia and leaving the room.
A heavy and awkward silence lingered in the atmosphere before Sebastian uttered a word.
-"let me show you around and carry your bags to your bed," he proposed.
Aurelia failed to respond, instead she stared at his face. She hated to admit that despite her roommate's weird demeanor, he was incredibly good-looking.
-"About earlier I-" Sebastian started still embarrassed.
-"it-it's okay. No worry about it. Y-you said that you would show me a-around," Aurelia stated quickly avoiding the conversation at all cost.
As Sebastian was eying her, his eyes fell on her pendant. The piece of sparkling emerald at the end of the string hanging around Aurelia's neck looked quite familiar to him. He had seen it somewhere. But where? He shook his head, shrugging his inquiries off and grabbed his roommate's bags.
-"As you know this is where you cook. It is the kitchen. This is where you sleep. There's only one bedroom. So we will accommodate a second bed next to mine. Well uhm. Not next, a bit far away.... This is the washroom, this is a toilet to...pee and yea. You take a shower here. And at last, the balcony. We were on fourth floor, so better be careful,"the boy presented as they walked around the apartment.
During her visit, Aurelia did not bother to pay attention to what he was saying. Her eyes and mind were busy admiring his well-built torso and the way his cherry lips moved as his tall and masculine figure walked around the small apartment. The idea of living with such a mesmerising man thrilled her, yet she had a hard time to move on from the scene as she first stepped foot in the apartment. The name Evy felt strangely familiar. It was almost like a déjà vu. Nothing was adding up since she had barely been around people in her life and none of them had the name Evy.
-"may I ask you a question Aurelia?" Sebastian asked taking a step closer causing Aurelia to freeze.
-"Ye-yes," she stammered.
-"Where did you get that necklace from?" he asked.
-"oh... We-well,that's a ra-rather lo-long story. I-it ma-may be a bit per-personal," she explained
-"oh, my apologies dear. I didn't mean to ask a question which may be out of line. I respect your boundaries," he explained.
Aurelia wanted to scream. He was so well-mannered and respectful unlike other boys she had encountered.
Sebastian was helping his roommate unpack. He was sitting on the bed while Aurelia walked towards the opened wardrobe with a stack of folded clothes. She walked right in front of the mirror, causing the young man to look at her reflection. He froze, the mirror portrayed his new roommate with paler skin and long silvery hair.
-"Ar-are yo-you okay? Yo-you look pa-pale," she asked concerned.
Sebastian eyed her up and down. She was totally different from her reflection. Her hair was still light brown, her skin still slightly tanned in contrast to her blue ocean eyes. The young man felt that he was going insane. He wanted it all to stop. The fact that it could well be a sign haunted him.
-"Ye-yes... I am fine. Don't worry," he smiled at her.
-"It's getting late Aurelia. Let's set your bed up," he said standing up and patting her shoulder.
While working on the furniture with bolts and buts, Sebastian's mind kept wandering with countless questions. He eventually came to the conclusion that despite his relationship with his family and despite the fact that he hated how right he mother could be, if such illusions persist, he may have to contact them and ask them questions. He could have opted to pay a visit to a doctor first, but it seemed that it was something else.
-"Here," he exclaimed after spending nearly an hour after setting the bed up.
-"tha-thank you, i really appreciate it," Aurelia thanked.
-"It's too late to cook something. Why don't we head out for food," he proposed.
Aurelia's eyes shimmered at the proposal and immediately accepted.
-"there's a fast food restaurant nearby. Let's go!"
...****************...
Aurelia's heart pounded in her chest as she caught Sebastian staring at her from across the table. Every eye contact they made, caused her head to spin around. She had never seen such an attractive man her whole life. They way his forest-green eyes shimmered under strands of his pitch black wavy hair which fell on his forehead. His skin was pale and freckles were sprinkled over his rosy cheeks. What was most eye-catching to her were his broad and sharp shoulders which stood over his small waist, resulting in a V-shaped torso. Her mouth watered at the sight. She wondered how she would resist him.
-"Tell me more about yourself Aurelia. Where are you from? What do you work as?" he asked slicing his streak smoothly.
She froze at the last question, causing Sebastian to raise an eyebrow.
-"We-well... Uhh," she started.
-"oh-oh we-well. I am study biochemistry and wo-work a-as uhm... I work at café... Usually night shifts," Aurelia managed to lie.
She lifted her hesd carefully to meet his piercing gaze.
It was her little secret. She did not have any other choice but to use her own body as a source of income. She had no one, no financial resources. Unlike young women of her age who could rely on their parents for stability, Aurelia had to rely on her own. She did not even have an idea of who her parents were as she had been raised in a foster home since the age of two. She barely remembered anything from her childhood. It was a blurry sequence of traumatising events for her. The first time she stepped foot in the strip club, she left with bags filled with money. She despised herself for depending on the lust filthy men had for her body. Yet, she was somehow passionate about pole dancing. She felt as if she could express herself. Overtime she got over the uncomfortable feeling of old men watching you dance vulnerable when a large area of your skin is exposed. She had to admit that she was ashamed of her dirty little secret. At the strip club, she was the infamous "Kitty Fur". Her movements were as elegant as those of a feline. She looked cunning as a fox. Men liked that. They were like hungry wolves devouring their long awaited prey, and splashing blood everything.
-"wh-what about you Sebastian?" she asked
-"I moved out from my family a few months ago now. I have my own business, and sell car parts,"he explained.
-" O-oh that's nice,"she replied with her hand shaking as she attempted to slice the steak which jumped off from her plate causing Sebastian to burst of laughter.
-" I will do it for you, "he said standing up and walking to her seat to slice her steak into thin pieces using her own cutlery.
After exchanging a few more questions, the both of them walked back to the apartment. Sebastian thought that he knew enough of his roommate to assume that she was trustworthy, oblivious to the amount of secrets she held. He had even forgotten about the commotion of the morning due to the nice moment he spent getting to know Aurelia. They left the restaurant and walked home.
...****************...
Two weeks passed by and the two roommates had not gotten any closer due to their lack of opportunities. They would just share a few words in the morning before taking their different paths. Sebastian would leave to his shop while Aurelia would leave for university. Moreover, unlike Sebastian who was already home by five in the afternoon, Aurelia would come back home late at night, sometimes early in the morning. For instance, Sebastian was suddenly woken uo by the jingle of the keys and the door flying open at half past two in the morning. It was Aurelia who at last came home from her night-shift at the cafe. Well, that was what he thought. He was clueless that she had actually returned home from the strip club. He blindly admired her for her dedication and how of a hard-working young lady she was. Day by day, he grew fond of her. He admired her for not only her unmatched beauty but also for how she laboured in her life. It was clear that she was exhausted. He offered to lend her a hand to help her acquire more financial stability, but she unfortunately declined politely.
Aurelia, on the other hand, admired him for not only his good looks but also his generosity. The day he offered her some money, her heart melted. She couldn't comprehend of somebody could be so kind and yet so good-looking. To her eyes, Sebastian was the definition of perfection despite his little events in the morning. Yet, she had to hold her feelings back for her own sake. She already had so much on her shoulders that at some point, she got used to waking up to a beautiful face watching her.
The following mornings had all been the same. The same sequence of events took place. Sebastian would wake up from the same dream, gasping for air and laying in a pool of sweat. He would turn his head to check on Aurelia, sleeping on the other bed and would freeze on the spot as she took the form of Evy. The long brown hair would be silvery white while her tanned skin would become pale as snow. After sometimes, everything would go back to normal. It's been two weeks now and Sebastian was still reluctant to seek help. However, that day, he had had enough. He needed answers.
After Aurelia had left for university, Sebastian left to his house. This time, however, he did not drive his car to his shop but instead to his parents' house, away from the town.
His extended family lived far from the urban areas, in a remote place. The huge wooden house stood in the middle of a meadow. After parking his car, Sebastian stared at the house for a while. Images of his parents and siblings preparing different potions to fasten his power awakening process flashed through his mind. The last thing he wanted to do was set foot in that madhouse again. To his dismay, he had limited options. He could either seek help from a psychiatrist who would send him to a mental hospital, or seek answer from the spiritual world. Why did he keep dreaming of the same thing for 15 following nights, witnessing the death of the dark fairy queen, Evy in the embrace of the the dark fairy king , Zaid? Why were his visions targeting Aurelia specifically? All these torments were driving him insane. It was not as if he could ask her to sleep away from him as if they had numerous rooms at their deposition. Additionally, he enjoyed sleeping in the same room as her. He was fond of her, and loved her presence, fruity scent and her sweet voice.
After contemplating for a while, Sebastian at last stepped out of his car and knocked on the door. After a long minute, the door finally opened to reveal his mother on the verge of tears as she gasped upon seeing him. Nothing had changed there. There style of clothing was still the very same, consisting of with a lot of jewelry made up of beads and crystal and either black clothes or clothes with animal prints.
-"oh my beloved son. Oh how I missed you," his mother said embracing him in a tight hug.
The other family members did not take much time before hurrying downstairs to meet the infamous "powerless being" after a long time.
They were all siting around a table with the elderly witches and sorcerers eying the young Sebastian's new fashion style up and down. They were not used tk seeing people dressed casually in black pants and a white shirt, without any accessory except for a watch.
-"So son, what brings you here after long months?" Mrs. Laura, his adored mother asked, pouring him a glass of juice.
-"mother...," Sebastian explained everything, without missing a piece of information. He ranted his mother about his repetitive dreams, the reflections in the mirror, Aurelia and the emerald necklace.
Everybody's jaw nearly dropped to the floor as Sebastian explained everything. It was as if they were expecting it but were still taken by surprise at the time.
-"So mother what's happening?" he asked breathlessly as he had just narrated his past weeks without taking a break.
-"Son, you need to bring me this girl as soon as possible," his grandmother and mother stated.
-"why ? What's happening?" he asked as he noticed everybody else standing up from their seat and rummage through the books of spell.
-"MOTHER WHAT'S HAPPENING?"
