Prologue
Have you ever been in the brink of death? With no one to hold onto, faith diminished by the thought of not surviving, and with a mind long accepted the nearest end of your own life. Have you ever experienced that?
I, for one, is experiencing that as we speak. The gushes of blood from the wound I accumulated from a gunshot pooled under my weak, limping body. I am death stilled on my place, putting every ounce of strength into pressuring the wound on my abdomen. It is this time I should be in panic, but my mind is focused on my survival.
The battle between a pack of werewolves and us, humans, is a futile act of justice. A suicide mission. As a soldier myself, I knew from the start that this battle will only drive us to our death, I tried telling them th, but they never listened.
Mom, Dad... Help me. Everything is falling apart. What did I do to deserve this—fuck! Why pity myself now? I am no scaredy cat. Dying here would be a badge of honour. BADGE OF HONOUR, ASS! Fuck you, Commander Santillian. I hope you rot in hell, you bitch.
Of course he wouldn’t listen. He drove us to our grave, his own platoon, just because he sided with them cute puppies (werewolves). God damn it all. Of all people, he had to shoot me.
The battle is still on going. The amount of willpower my comrades have had rendered me speechless. Why don’t they just surrender? Fighting back is futile. If they start raising their white flags, they would have not only save their lives, but would also avoid being in the death notes of them wolves.
Why are you even worrying about them, Iris? You're the one that’s dying. I mentally scolded myself. But I am slowly losing consciousness, it’s slipping off, and my mind is feeling groggy. The strength I have left is slowly deteriorating, so as my lifeline. Even before I lose consciousness, I found myself praying to the heavens to save me. To get me out of here and bring me to a safe and peaceful place...

The sound of the alarm blaring through the building woke me up from my slumber, so as my comrades. It is yet the start of another hectic day, my every day life that I dread the most. Why did I even apply for this work? And why the fuck did they even hire me?!
I hastily folded my comforter and smooth out my mattress. I was busy getting my uniform ready when Lily peek from the top of the bunk bed, a grin plastered on her face.
I rose a brow at her. “What?”
She shook her head. “You know, Iris, you’d really look good if you just put on a smile.”
I scoffed at what she said. “What’s there to smile for? I have a hectic day ahead of me and Commander Bitch won’t even spare me even for a minute!” I said, annoyed.
“Oh, dear. Did he give you more papers to go through today? I can help,” she said with an apologetic look on her face.
I sighed, “it’s fine. Thank you for the offer, Lily.”
We both went back to what we were doing before. I ironed my uniform and made sure that I have everything I need before I go take a quick shower. I have 45 minutes to get ready before the daily room inspection to happen.
I carried my robe with me and a spare towel for my hair, and made my way to the shower area. I picked up my pace when I saw that it’s almost crowded, I might lose a spot. I don’t want that to happen.
Once I settled my things inside, I turned on the shower and let the cool water run on my skin. Thank god, there’s still something worth having in this base. I didn’t take long in the shower area and hurried back to the quarters. I made sure to pat myself dry before wearing my undies before my uniform. After I am done with it, I turned towards the small mirror I had on the drawer beside the bunk bed.
I picked up the brush and starts brushing my tangled hair. It always annoy me having to do this every single day, it’s tiring as hell. I put it in a bun and secured it with a scrunchie. I also applied gel to smooth out the baby hairs I have, and made myself look presentable. After that, I applied moisturizer and sunscreen on my face, and put on colored lip balm. Well, I’m not a trainee anymore, so I can put on make up whenever I want to.
Once I’m done, I put away the things I used inside the drawer in order. Good thing the girls with me knows how to keep it clean in here, I would’ve flipped if not.
Minutes later, the room starts to get a bit noisy with murmuring and talking. The girls finished one by one, just in time for the daily inspection. We positioned ourselves beside our bunk beds, eyes ahead, standing straight, and chests out.
We watched as the utility lady rounded the room for a good 10 minutes, checking every nook and crook of the room.
Before making her way out of the room, she made sure to salute. “Good job, ladies.”
Some of us breathed a sigh of relief. We admit that that utility lady gives us a type of scare than most of the higher ups. She’s terrifying.
“God, that was nerve-racking,” said Cara.
Lily hummed, “yea, tell me about it.”
“I can’t believe we’re scared of her than that Commander Bitch,” I said with a frown on my face.
“Exactly!” Demi chimed in. “The look on Commander Bitch’s face can’t compare to the utility lady’s terrifying look.”
“If that utility lady become our commander, I would gladly resign from my post and this job,” Lily said while acting like she’s shivering from the thought.
I just laughed at what she said. If you are wondering why we call our Commander that way, let’s just say that we women have lots of guts to do so. It’s also his fault why we despise his ass-looking face, so as his name. Lieutenant Colonel Butch Santillian a.k.a Commander Bitch.

Our job is to guard the border, which is located on the outskirts of town. We have to protect every citizen from danger that the unknown would put them through. If you’re wondering, it’s really not that unknown. Some of the citizens already encountered these unworldly creatures, even I encountered them many times. The menacing look they have, the bloodlust even humans can smell from afar, and their actions of killing people without hesitation. They are monsters with monstrous intent. It is, without a doubt, one of the most horrifying thing to witness, a situation nobody wants to be in.
The first time I experienced that was when I was twelve. Too young if you would ask me. It was also the first time I had known of their existence, an existence unknown to the society–except the ones in the government.
I was home-schooled since I was five years old. Teachers come and go just to teach me basic education, but none of them taught me about the supernatural beings. Not that I was curious, since I haven’t heard of them until I turned twelve.
I got bored of my everyday life, I wanted to explore outside, play with kids my age, but my parents never allowed me to. They always tell me about how dangerous it was to go out. I thought they were just making excuses to keep me locked inside our house, that was why I made a plan to sneak out–well, more like to break out of the house.
I had my plan in action after my teacher for History went home, it was me and two of my maids. I had them fetch me some of my toys from my room, I specifically told them to go together and that I would be fine on my own in the living room.
When I was sure that they’re gone, instead of using the door, I made my way towards the window sill. I slowly unlocked the window and pushed it open. The chilly wind was the first thing that welcomed me and the sight of snow, covering most of our drive way.
I carefully psyched myself up the window sill, taking a last glance behind me before I took off. The adrenaline rush I felt was given now that I worked myself out of that house. I ran and ran to my heart’s content, I felt adventurous.
I stopped under a tree once I felt exhausted, mentally scolding myself for not bringing anything to quench my thirst. I could also hear the grumble my stomach makes because of hunger, making me realized that I haven’t had my afternoon snack.
My head whipped to the right faster than I ever did when I heard a twig snap. It’s like I am a deer caught in 4K. I almost peed myself when I saw a gigantic wolf. It may look magestic but trust me, the look it gave me is terrifying. It sent me shivers down my spine.
The being looked at me hungrily, its canines are visible with drools hanging from it, growling while slowly approaching me. Every step it takes is the opposite of my heart, it’s racing, beating really fast against my chest. I gulped the fear that’s rendered me still, I slowly extended my hand in front of the wolf. It’s a suicide action at this point and you may find me stupid, but I really did that.
With my hand extended, I said, “please don’t eat me. I’m scared. I just want to play...”
The wolf look at me as if I was being crazy because of the fear I’m feeling, but it didn’t stop approaching me. It got to the point where I regret going out and not listening to my mom and dad, I regret sneaking out of the house, I regret being curious, and I regret planning all of these things up.
The only thing I thought of was to run. I prepared myself to do so but as I was about to, the wolf was already mid-air, and was about to pounce on me. I closed my eyes and clenched my fist really tight until I felt myself being lifted off the ground.
I opened my eyes slowly and found myself floating in the air. I’m scared, astonished, in awe, and relieved.
“Uh-uh, wolfie. You don’t do that to children.” I heard a female voice under me. She’s wearing an emerald green dress that suits her skin stone, her hair is jet black, but I can’t see her face clearly.
I saw the wolf on the ground–it looked... lifeless.
“Oh.”
I snapped my head back to where the lady is and she’s looking at me amusingly. Her eyes are the greenest green I’ve ever seen, it almost match her dress.
“I have to bring you back to your parents. We might meet again but that will take long,” she said while giggling. “Good night, dear.”
I opened my mouth to speak but my vision became blurry and all went black.
