Mansion For More

Prologue

The Jeep wheels roll steadily, and the luggage thuds in the trunk as the family heads to their new home. The parents discuss their long-term plans while their eldest child attends an online college class. Meanwhile, their daughter enjoys the breeze flowing through the vehicle. She reflects on her previous home, school, and friends, looking at pictures of her friends and old place. She hopes to make wonderful new friends like those she’s left behind.

Susan is a 13-year-old girl who enjoys peace and solitude. She enjoys hobbies like painting, reading novels, sightseeing, and listening to music. Her brother struggles with social anxiety and claustrophobia, which keeps him from going out often; he only ventures outside occasionally. Although Susan's parents are successful business owners, they have maintained a humble household for many years, making it difficult for others to realize their wealth. Now, they are ready to give their children a larger, more luxurious life, so they have purchased a mansion.

CHAPTER 1: What's Up With The Library?

The family arrived at their destination, and it was indeed grand. The structure of the place looked straight out of a novel. The area surrounding the house was vast, featuring a large tree in the front yard. It was so large that multiple tree houses could fit in its branches. Normally, a tree that big might have been chopped down, but it remained standing for some reason.

Susan asked her father why the tree was still there, and he replied that he had been told it couldn't be cut down. Susan pointed out that it was a tree and that all trees can be cut. Her father explained that the people who sold him the house claimed the tree was as old as the house itself, and that the neighbors were already familiar with it. He suggested they should respect it, especially since the tree was too thick to cut down. Susan admired the tree but was more eager to explore the mansion.

She approached the front doors, adorned with beautiful engravings of a great mystical creature—a dragon. As she opened the doors, she was astonished by the grandeur of the interior; it was even more impressive than the exterior. Meanwhile, her brother, Liam, was unloading their belongings from the car trunk. When he saw his sister, he called out for her to bring her things inside. Although she was reluctant, Liam insisted that he couldn't fetch her items because he had classes to attend. Ignoring him, Susan stepped inside anyway.

What she didn't realize was that someone was watching her…

The mansion featured a spacious hall large enough to host a party. Adjacent to it were two elegant staircases that curved gracefully upwards. The kitchen was immaculate and impressive, with white tiles so clean that one could eat off them. A beautiful chandelier illuminated the entire area with bright light. The lobby was equally striking. Beneath the stairs, a door resembling the front entrance caught her attention. She entered and was left speechless; it was a library filled with books.

Glass French doors opened to the backyard, where she could see a meticulously maintained garden. Now, she was eager to explore the books.

Susan picked up a book that featured an illustration of a dragon on the cover. Curious, she checked another book and found it also depicted a dragon. She wondered if the original owner had been a dragon lover. When she opened one of the books, she realized she could not understand it; it was written in some ancient language. She looked for a different book to read, but they were all in the same language. Confused, she abandoned the books and looked for something else.

Eventually, she stumbled upon a chart that contained the same language but seemed to translate the alphabet. Upon closer inspection, she noticed that this language was not so different from English. She then found a smaller book and used the chart to translate the first sentence. It translated: "Born with great power and blessed with long life, the embodiment of the galaxies resides as a being among others." It was intriguing, and she wanted to keep reading, but the translation process was exhausting.

Deciding to set it aside for now, she finally translated the book's title: "Star Dragons, Galaxies in the Flesh." It was certainly an interesting title.

Susan flips through the pages of the book and a picture falls out. She picks it up to take a look but then her mother calls her, prompting her to put the photo in her mini purse. She steps out of the library and her mother tells her to get her things and help unload some other stuff. She says she isn't done exploring yet and she says what she usually does, "He who does not work shall not eat!". Susan is now forced to go and her mother returns to other duties.

Stepping out of the elaborate structure, she feels something is off. She raises her foot and sees a folded piece of paper. She picks it up and opens it to see a message but behold... It's written in the same language as the books in the library. Susan looks around but sees nothing out of the ordinary. Then she looks at the tree and gets a word feeling. Liam calls her attention and she remembers what she's supposed to be doing.

Susan goes to help unload, but her brother scolds her for slacking off and daydreaming too much. She responds that she'll change when he goes out with her. He retorts that she isn’t his girlfriend, to which she points out that she never claimed to be. Liam rolls his eyes, believing he will never understand his little sister. In response, Susan kicks him and tells him not to act so sassy. The kick causes Liam to drop his headset, so he drops his load and chases after Susan. She runs away and accidentally bumps into their father, causing his office equipment to fly out of his hands and scatter in the air. A stapler falls toward their father, and both siblings push him out of the way just in time. All three of them crash to the ground. Amidst the mess, they laugh at the spectacle, until their mother, Mrs. Walter, appears, clearly unamused by the chaos. Everyone returns to their chores, and Liam tells Susan he’ll get her back for the kick.

They have finished unloading their belongings and are now waiting for the moving van to arrive with their furniture and other items. Susan, who often takes things easy, feels exhausted from her minimal work. Meanwhile, the siblings head upstairs to choose their rooms, and Liam takes a moment to admire the interior as they move through the house.

CHAPTER 2: CLOSE CALL

Upon arriving in her room, she locked the door and closed the balcony doors before drawing the curtains shut. She sat on her incredibly fluffy bed and decided she needed a bath to clear her head. She certainly didn't expect the bathroom to be so nice; it had a bathtub and shower. It temporarily took her mind away from the previous incident. At least she could enjoy a bubble bath. The water was warm and steamy... it was a wonderful experience.

Susan found her pajamas in the box where her clothes were stored. She changed into them and opened the balcony curtains and doors. Standing outside, she enjoyed the evening breeze as it tousled her beautiful bright blue hair, and the cool air made her smile. She hoped that things would remain as quiet and peaceful as they were at that moment. Amid her tranquility, she recalled what had happened in the library and wondered if she was the only one noticing these strange occurrences. With her thoughts racing, she returned to the room and checked her purse for her phone.

When she took out her phone, the paper she picked up from the library slipped out and fell to the ground. She recognized it and picked it up. Upon closer inspection, she noticed it was a family photo that was hand-painted with watercolors. A man and a woman, presumably husband and wife, stood with three boys. The two older boys appeared to be around ten years old and looked almost identical, though their hair colors contrasted. The younger boy, who appeared to be around four years old, was being carried by the man. They were all dressed in English clothing that resembled the attire of wealthy people from the medieval ages, complete with frills and elaborate designs.

On further examination, she noticed that the woman had a baby bump. The photo seemed to have been taken next to a tree, which, although smaller, looked strikingly similar to the one in their front yard. She wondered if this family had once lived in the mansion as well.

Susan checked her phone and noticed she had missed calls from her friends. Realizing it was late and past her bedtime, she decided it was time to go to bed. She placed the photo on the side desk and got into bed. However, she found it difficult to sleep, so she played some music. As she stared at the ceiling, her thoughts began to drift. She thought about her friends, the mansion, the library, the photo, her family, herself, and even the people she might meet soon. She reflected on the silence in the room and hoped for ongoing tranquility before finally drifting off to sleep.

At night, Susan was the only one asleep. Liam worked on assignments while their parents were still busy with various tasks. As Susan slept, an uninvited guest entered through her balcony. The creature zipped towards her bed, and bright lime green eyes looked down at her. The eyes resembled those of a reptile, with narrow pupils that contracted horizontally, giving it a piercing gaze.

The figure drew closer to her face and opened its mouth, revealing razor-sharp teeth. It sounded hungry and lunged toward the poor girl's head. Just then, the room door opened, and the creature quickly escaped through the balcony. Susan's mother entered the room, saw that Susan was asleep, and wished her daughter sweet dreams before leaving. Outside, the creature appeared satisfied with its visit, as it had gotten what it came for. Then, it disappeared into the night.

Morning arrived, and Susan woke up with her hair tousled. She felt strange but couldn’t pinpoint why. Ignoring her instincts, she yawned and prepared herself before heading to breakfast.
