Lyra Kuroi walks through the narrow, rain-soaked streets of Neon City. The dim lights from flickering signs cast a cold glow on the puddles beneath her feet. She flips her coat’s collar up and steps into a crime scene, where her partner, Kai, is waiting next to a body covered with a tarp. Police officers and forensic teams are scattered around, but all eyes are on Lyra as she approaches.
Kai (with a grin):
“You’re late. Miss me, Kuroi?”
Lyra (smirking):
“I missed the part where you solved the case already. Or are you waiting for me to do your job again?”
Lyra crouches down, lifting the tarp slightly to examine the victim—a middle-aged man with strange markings on his arm.
Kai (mock offended):
“I was just about to figure it out, but then I thought, why not let the genius detective have her moment?”
Lyra (dryly):
“Yeah, right. The day you crack a case without my help is the day I become a ballerina.”
She examines the markings more closely, her eyes narrowing.
Lyra (seriously):
“These aren’t just random tattoos. They’re sigils. Old tech symbols. This guy was mixed up in some deep stuff.”
Kai (whistling):
“You sure? Looks more like a bad night at the tattoo parlor to me.”
Lyra:
“Well, if the tattoo parlor specializes in illegal relic tech smuggling, then yeah.”
Before Kai can reply, a shadow moves at the end of the alley. Lyra is already on alert, her hand subtly reaching for her weapon.
Kai (oblivious):
“You think it’s related to the other cases? Maybe that relic tech syndicate we—”
Lyra cuts him off with a sharp whisper.
Lyra:
“Shut up and get behind me.”
Kai blinks but follows her lead, as the shadowy figure bolts down the alley. Lyra springs into action, dashing after them, her trench coat billowing behind her.
Kai (shouting after her):
“Lyra, wait—! Ugh, why do I always get stuck with the action hero?”
Lyra weaves through the narrow alleyways with the agility of a cat, effortlessly dodging trash cans and leaping over obstacles. The figure ahead vaults up onto a rooftop, but Lyra is right behind them. The chase leads her across buildings, each jump closing the gap.
Lyra (grinning to herself):
“Gotcha now.”
The figure attempts a desperate leap to the next rooftop, but Lyra’s faster. She lunges forward, grabbing their ankle mid-air, and both of them crash onto the roof. Lyra rolls to her feet, pinning the suspect down with ease.
Suspect (panting):
“You… you don’t know what you’re getting into…”
Lyra (leaning in, voice dripping with sarcasm):
“Oh, I think I have a pretty good idea. Now, talk. Or I’ll get really creative.”
The suspect glares but remains silent. Kai finally arrives, panting heavily.
Kai (out of breath):
“You…you couldn’t… wait a second?”
Lyra (laughing):
“Where’s the fun in that?”
She pulls the suspect to their feet, her tone shifting back to business.
Lyra:
“Alright, pal, start talking. Who sent you, and why does the corpse back there have relic tech symbols all over him?”
The room is dimly lit. Lyra and Kai sit across from the suspect, who remains stubbornly silent, his gaze fixed on the table. Lyra taps her fingers against the table impatiently, her eyes never leaving the suspect.
Kai (leaning back in his chair):
“C’mon, buddy. You’re not doing yourself any favors by staying quiet. We know you’re just a small cog in a bigger machine.”
The suspect shifts uncomfortably but says nothing. Lyra leans forward, her voice cold and steady.
Lyra:
“You’re protecting someone. Someone important. But here’s the thing—we already know who it is. So, you’re not protecting anyone. You’re just delaying the inevitable.”
The suspect finally looks up, his eyes betraying a hint of fear.
Suspect (nervously):
“I’m dead either way…”
Lyra (mocking surprise):
“Oh? You mean ‘The Specter’? The infamous criminal mastermind everyone whispers about? Yeah, I’ve heard the stories. But let me tell you something: I’m not scared of bedtime stories.”
Kai (raising an eyebrow):
“The Specter? Really? You think this guy’s connected to that?”
Lyra (with a sharp grin):
“Yeah, I do. And that means we’re closer than we thought.”
Suddenly, the lights flicker. A high-pitched screech fills the room as the holographic communication system crackles to life. On the screen, a figure appears, their face obscured by shadows, only their piercing eyes visible. The room grows tense as the air thickens with unease.
The Specter (in a smooth, confident voice):
“Ah, Detective Kuroi. I was wondering when you’d get involved. I’ve heard so much about you.”
Lyra’s eyes narrow, but she leans back in her chair, maintaining her calm.
Lyra (coolly):
“Flattered. But I prefer to meet my admirers in person.”
The Specter (chuckling):
“In due time. But for now, I’ll give you a piece of advice: walk away. You’re digging into matters that are far beyond your comprehension.”
Kai (muttering):
“Wow, the arrogance on this guy…”
Lyra holds up a hand, signaling Kai to stay quiet.
Lyra (grinning):
“Beyond my comprehension, huh? Funny. Because the more I dig, the more you seem to be getting nervous. Otherwise, why bother showing up in my little interrogation?”
The Specter (voice hardening):
“You’ve been warned. This city doesn’t belong to you. It belongs to the future. And you, Detective Kuroi, are stuck in the past. Relics, history—they’re meaningless. Soon, Neon City will see a new dawn.”
The screen flickers again, and the communication cuts off abruptly, leaving a stunned silence in the room.
Kai (breaking the silence):
“Okay, that was… intense. So, what now? Do we track the signal?”
Lyra (standing up, her eyes sharp):
“No need. I already know where to find him.”
Kai blinks, surprised.
Kai:
“Wait, seriously? And you didn’t think to mention this earlier?”
Lyra (with a smirk):
“Sometimes, I like to let the bad guys talk. Gives me more clues to work with.”
Kai shakes his head, still a bit baffled by how quickly Lyra connects the dots. As they leave the room, Lyra’s smile fades, her mind now focused on The Specter.
Lyra (to herself):
“This isn’t just about relic tech. It’s bigger. And if The Specter wants me out of the way, that means I’m getting close.”

Notes on The Specter:
Real Name: Unknown for now, but they could have a personal connection to Lyra’s past, adding tension as the story progresses.
Personality: Charismatic, highly intelligent, and always thinking several steps ahead. They believe in reshaping the world using forbidden relic tech, seeing the past as a hindrance to progress.
Motivation: Control of Neon City’s underground using ancient relic technology for something far more sinister, possibly even world-altering. They view Lyra as a nuisance who could jeopardize their grand plans.
The Specter's Background:
Name: Elias Varyn (Alias: The Specter)
Age: Early 40s
Former Occupation: Tech visionary and one of the minds behind Neon City’s modern infrastructure. Elias was once respected for his work in developing new technologies based on ancient relics. However, his obsession with pushing the limits of relic tech led to a tragic accident that destroyed part of the city and cost him his reputation.
Relationship with Lyra: Elias and Lyra have a history. Years ago, Elias was once a mentor to Lyra’s father, a renowned relics researcher. When Elias’ experiments led to the accident, Lyra’s father was killed. Elias went underground and became "The Specter," using his knowledge of relic tech for his own purposes.
Motivation: Elias believes that relic tech holds the key to saving humanity. He sees the current systems of control in Neon City as outdated and corrupt. He wants to use the ancient technology to create a new order—one where technology and power are combined to create a utopia. To him, anyone standing in the way of this vision is either blind or weak, and must be removed, including Lyra.
Personality: Elias is coldly logical but deeply passionate about his beliefs. He sees himself as a visionary and others as trapped by the past. His obsession with relic tech makes him unpredictable, as he’s willing to cross any line for progress.

Lyra’s Allies:
Kai Tanaka (already introduced):
Role: Lyra’s loyal partner in the investigation.
Skills: Tech and hacking specialist. While not as physically skilled as Lyra, he’s the brains behind many of their operations, capable of disabling security systems, tracking suspects via digital footprints, and manipulating the city's network.
Personality: A bit of a joker, Kai balances out Lyra’s intensity with his lighthearted attitude. He often acts as comic relief, but his intelligence and loyalty make him invaluable. Deep down, he’s in awe of Lyra’s abilities but never lets that stop him from teasing her.
Carmen “The Whisper” Nox:
Occupation: Information broker and former thief. Carmen works in the shadows, collecting secrets from all corners of Neon City. She has an extensive network of spies, smugglers, and informants that help her stay one step ahead of the law.
Skills: Master of disguise, infiltration, and deception. Carmen is also a skilled combatant, though she prefers to use her wit and charm to get what she wants.
Relationship with Lyra: They have a complicated history. Once on opposite sides of the law, Carmen was an informant for Lyra’s father and helped him uncover relics, which eventually tied into the events that led to his death. Lyra doesn’t fully trust Carmen, but she knows Carmen has valuable information on the relic tech syndicate.
Personality: Mysterious and seductive, Carmen is always looking out for herself first, but she has a soft spot for Lyra due to their shared past. She enjoys keeping people guessing about her true motives.
Professor Julian Asher:
Occupation: A reclusive relics expert and former colleague of Lyra’s father. Julian helped raise Lyra after her father’s death and has become a father figure to her. He lives on the outskirts of Neon City, far from the corruption and violence.
Skills: A brilliant scholar with a deep understanding of ancient relics and their hidden powers. He often helps Lyra decipher symbols or piece together clues tied to the relic tech.
Personality: Julian is wise but burdened by the loss of his friend (Lyra’s father) and the guilt of not being able to prevent the tragedy. He’s cautious and often warns Lyra to stay away from relic tech, knowing how dangerous it can be. Still, he provides guidance when needed.
