In the busy streets of Seoul, Park Eun Kyung, a 25-year-old reporter, worked late in a small café. She was investigating gang activities and was close to uncovering something important. Just as she felt she was onto something big, her phone buzzed with a message: "You're getting too close." Even though it scared her, she tried to ignore it.
Later that night, after finishing her article, Eun Kyung walked to her car in a dark parking lot. Suddenly, she saw a tall man in black clothing standing nearby. She felt a shiver run down her spine. Before she could react, he opened her car door and pulled her out. "You crazy bastard"! You're coming with me," he said in a deep voice. "What do you want from me?" she shouted, feeling scared. "Our boss wants to talk to you," he replied. His smile suggested he found her scared attitude funny. Before she knew it, she was pushed into a black van, and it took off quickly. Eun Kyung's heart raced as she realized she was meeting Kim Ji Ho, the notorious mafia boss.
Inside the dark van, Eun Kyung clutched her bag tightly, the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She struggled to catch her breath, but her mind raced with questions. Why did they want to see her? She had been careful-she hadn't gone public with her findings yet.
The van took sharp turns that sent her tumbling slightly against the side. After what felt like an eternity, they finally stopped. The door swung open, and the man who had grabbed her stepped aside, motioning her to exit.
Eun Kyung hesitated but knew resisting would only make things worse. She stepped out into a dimly lit alley, the cold night air biting at her skin. A heavyset man with a sharp suit waited by a door marked with the emblem of a phoenix-the symbol of Kim Ji Ho's empire.
Welcome, Ms. Park," he said with a disarming smile that contrasted his intimidating presence. "I'm Jae, Ji Ho's right-hand man. The boss has been expecting you."
As they walked inside, the smell of expensive cigars mixed with the faint scent of fear that lingered in the air. The interior was lavishly decorated, a stark contrast to the grim façade outside. They were greeted by a group of expressionless men who eyed her with suspicion.
Jae gestured for her to sit in a plush chair opposite a large wooden desk. At the far end sat Kim Ji Ho himself-his dark hair slicked back, an air of authority surrounding him.
"Eun Kyung," he began, his voice smooth like silk yet laced with danger. "I've been following your little investigation. Impressive work for someone so young. But you've crossed a line-one that could put you, and your family, in grave danger."
"What do you want from me?" she asked defiantly, her fear transforming into a fierce resolve. "I'm just doing my job."
Ji Ho leaned back, a hint of admiration flickering in his eyes. "That's exactly the problem. You see, the truth can be a double-edged sword. I'm not here to kill you. I want to make a deal."
Suspicion clouded Eun Kyung's mind. "What kind of deal?"
"You stop digging into our activities, and I'll ensure that no harm comes to you or your family. You write a piece praising our charity work instead. It's a win-win situation."
Eun Kyung felt a surge of anger. "You think I'd sell my integrity for safety? You're as corrupt as they come."
Ji Ho's smile faded, but beneath the calm exterior, Eun Kyung sensed the anger simmering. "You misunderstand me. This isn't a negotiation; it's an ultimatum. If you choose to continue this path, you'll wish you hadn't. I have the resources to make you... disappear."
As his words hung in the air, Eun Kyung's mind raced. She realized she had two choices: yielding to the mafia's threats or exposing them for the criminals they were. In that moment of clarity, a determined thought cemented itself in her mind.
"I'll never work for you," she said, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling beneath. "I'll expose you whether you like it or not."
Ji Ho's eyes narrowed, a predator sizing up its prey. "Very well. But remember, Eun Kyung, I always win in the end."
With that, he waved a hand, and Jae stood, guiding her toward the exit. "You have twenty-four hours to reconsider. After that, it's out of my hands."
As Eun Kyung stepped back into the chilly night, her heart pounding with fear and fury, she took a deep breath. She had just entered a deadly game against one of Seoul's most dangerous men. But she wouldn't back down. With her phone buzzing in her pocket, she knew she had to reach out to her trusted sources-perhaps even bring in the authorities.
But as she turned to head to her car, she sensed a presence behind her. A figure emerged from the shadows, and she recognized him instantly. He was one of the gang members she had been investigating. Their eyes met, and in that fleeting moment, Eun Kyung knew her troubles were only just beginning.
