EP.1 no longer human by osamu dazai

"No Longer Human" by Osamu Dazai dives deep into feelings of alienation and what it means to be human, told through the eyes of Oba Yozo, a guy who constantly feels out of place in society.

The story unfolds through a collection of notebooks found after Yozo's death, giving us a close look at his troubled mind. He begins to realize he is more of an observer in life than a participant. From his childhood, he felt like an outsider, which led to struggles with his identity. He often thinks of himself as “no longer human,” feeling completely disconnected from everyone around him.

As a teen, Yozo tries to fit in by adopting different personalities, but this only makes him feel more alone. He wears a mask of humor and charm to hide his sadness, managing to get through social situations but feeling increasingly lost inside. Whenever he seeks real connections with others, he's often let down, which reinforces his belief that he doesn't really belong.

His life gets darker as he turns to drinking and unstable relationships in a misguided effort to fill the emptiness inside him. Despite the fleeting comfortable moments with women, he struggles to understand their feelings and truly connect, which only deepens his sense of inadequacy.

As the story progresses, Yozo's mental health starts to seriously decline. He deals with severe depression, feeling like a burden to his loved ones, which adds to his despair. His attempts to figure out who he is and what life is all about become more complicated, leaving him feeling trapped in a cycle of sadness.

Dazai's writing captures Yozo's complex emotional struggles beautifully. The way the fragmented story reflects his chaotic thoughts pulls readers into his confusion. Yozo's honest reflections make us think hard about mental health and how challenging it can be for people to connect on a deeper level.

As things spiral out of control for him, he realizes that fitting in and finding comfort is pointless. The ending highlights the tragic results of his disconnect from everyone, driving home a powerful message about identity and belonging.

Overall, "No Longer Human" is a poignant exploration of existential despair that resonates with many, urging readers to consider the importance of understanding and compassion in our interactions. Yozo's journey is a reminder of the silent battles of so many faces while trying to navigate the expectations of society.
