Victor stood across from her, his arms crossed, his face unreadable. The man she had once loved so deeply now wore a mask of indifference, a cruel contrast to the tenderness she had once seen in his eyes.

Elara opened her mouth, as if to protest, but words failed her. How had it come to this? This is the man I loved, she thought. The man I trusted with my life.
