chapter1: The Present

Emma Hart stood at the expensive glass window of her corner office, gazing out at the bustling city below. As the CEO of visionary Solutions, she had a built a thriving tech empire from the ground up. At thirty-five, she was a force to be reckoned with - intelligent, ambitious and driven. Yet, despite her professional success, her heartfelt heavy with unresolved emotions.

Just days ago, she'd walked into the office to find David Clarke, her first love and long-lost ex-boyfriend, sitting in the marketing department. Their eyes had locked for the first time in over a decade, a moment charged with unspoken words. Memories flooded back -laughter, tenderness, and the bittersweet ache of their breakup. Emma had sworn she was over him, that she'd moved on completely. But seeing him again stirred feelings she thought had long been buried.

As days turned into weeks, their encounter became frequent. They shared small talk by the coffee machine and exchanged glances during meetings. Emma couldn't help but feel the old spark reigniting. But with every interaction came the sting of the past. David had left her years ago, and while she fought to rise above the heartache, it was clear that he still held a piece of her heart.

One evening, after an intense brainstorming session, Emma overheard David talking with a colleague. She caught snippets of their conversation thinking David is sharing his inner feeling with his friend but the words that pierced through her like daggers. " Yeah, I used to date her, she was so clIngy to me,,,, and you know what she was really poor at that tIme, I just pIty her that she is a kind Little girl who need love I just want to move on from my ex and I just dated her but now dude Its dIfferent she Is a CEO. At the past I break upp wIth her because I don't want a poor gIrlfrIend who doesn't even have money and dIdn't thInk I could keep up wIth her. It was easIer to walk away".

Emma's heart sank, her heart broke into pieces after realizing that the boy she lovesd more than herself for him,, she was just a girl for him to move on. She thought that all those years we spent was just nothing. After hearing their conversation she left to her home.

Reaching home, she starts crying and thinking about the memories which she thought was love,, but it was just a timepass, thinking about the past shemumbledes to herself - "is that what i am Inyour eyes David, i loved you for 5 fucking years, and it was easy for you to walk away from me". That night, as she was crying and staring at the ceiling, Emma made a decision. If David thought he could just walk back in her life after all this time, he was sorely mistaken. She mumbles -" I will make you regret it, David Clarke........

Was she going to take revenge or was it something deepe- a longing for connection for understanding? Emma wrestled with her emotions, knowing that confronting the past would eventually became inevitable. But for now, she steeled herself for the battle ahead, determined to prove that she was more than the girl he left behind.

The Reminder

Emma pushed open the conference room door, heart racing with a mix of anticipation and determination. As she stepped inside, she noticed the room's energy shift. Her colleagues stood, their faces a mix of respect and acknowledgment. Everyone, that is, except David.

He remained seated, leaning back with a casual air that sent a jolt of anger through her. The slight felt intentional, a direct challenge to her authority as CEO. For a moment, she hesitated, but then she steeled herself. She wouldn’t let his arrogance overshadow her presence.

“Good morning, everyone,” she said, her voice steady, masking the whirlwind of emotions inside her.

“Morning, Emma,” the team replied in unison, but David’s smirk remained. The tension in the room was palpable as she took her seat at the head of the table, eyes locked on him.

As the meeting commenced, Emma laid out her agenda, but she could feel David’s dismissive attitude lingering. His arms crossed, he interrupted her with flippant comments that undermined her leadership.

After a few minutes of back-and-forth, Emma raised her hand, cutting through his latest remark. “David, can we pause for a moment?”

He looked surprised but leaned back, feigning disinterest. “Sure, go ahead.”

“I noticed you chose to remain seated when I entered the room,” she said, keeping her tone measured. “As CEO, it’s customary for everyone to stand when I enter, showing respect for the position and the role I play here. You, of all people, should understand that.”

His expression shifted, confusion creeping in as the reality of her words sank in. “I didn’t mean anything by it,” he stammered, but she could see the uncertainty in his eyes.

“No? Then let’s clarify,” she continued, feeling empowered. “You may think you can undermine me with your casual disrespect, but you’re a mere employee in this company. I’ve worked hard to earn my position, and I expect you to acknowledge that.”

The room fell silent, her colleagues shifting uncomfortably. Emma took a deep breath, letting her words hang in the air. “If you can’t respect me as your leader, then perhaps it’s time for you to reconsider your role here.”

David’s face paled as he struggled to regain his footing. “I—”

“Let me make it clear,” she interrupted, her voice firm. “You are not in charge here. I am. And I won’t tolerate anyone treating me—or this team—like we’re anything less than we are.”

He opened his mouth to protest, but she could see the defeat washing over him. Emma felt a surge of pride. She had not only asserted her authority but had also reclaimed her sense of self.

“Now, let’s refocus on the agenda,” she said, her voice steady as she returned to the discussion. As she spoke, she could sense the room rallying behind her, the energy shifting in her favor.

By the end of the meeting, Emma felt lighter, empowered by her ability to stand up for herself. As her colleagues filed out, David lingered, looking bewildered.

“Emma, wait,” he said, finally showing a hint of vulnerability.

“Save it,” she replied, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. “I heard everything you said yesterday, and I regret ever letting you make me feel less than I am.”

With that, she turned and walked away, the weight of his presence fading behind her. She had taught him a lesson today, one that reminded him—and herself—of her worth.

As she stepped into the hallway, a newfound sense of confidence enveloped her. Emma had faced down her past, stood tall in the face of disrespect, and emerged victorious. Today marked not just a turning point in her career but a reaffirmation of her identity. She was ready to lead, and no one—especially not David—could take that away from her.
