Banquets Of Death

Red Stained Clothes

Ancient Korea, year 1143, 4th of May, the son of King Jeon Jae Limdam came into this world. The King and Queen were the rulers of Multtang, and Multtang was known for its grand celebrations, so how could they not describe this incident as a festival, their son being born? But strangely, while they were making a toast, someone screamed from the back, "May a wheel run over your child's skull!" it was a woman, apparently.

The King ordered his guards to bring the lady onto the stage and behead the sinner, but unfortunately, they couldn't find anyone with a voice even similar to the mysterious lady's voice, so they let it go and kept on celebrating. But surely, just as the woman predicted, the new prince fell from a carriage because of the Queen's clumsiness and his head was squashed under a wheel. They nobles, royals, commoners and prisoners thought it was a coincidence, they all even reassured the King and Queen saying "It's just a coincidence!" or "No one can escape fate and karma, the new prince must have sinned in his past lives, don't grieve." and "Past always catches up..."

In a neighboring country (state) called Bunyeong, a similar incident took place, on another day, in another year and with another king. It was the birthday of the prince of Bunyeong, his father died by burning alive, all nearby cities suffered from similar cases, if anyone held a big function or banquet, the main person or host would be cursed, and something bad would happen. The villagers gave this voice a name, "The Voice of Misfortune".

The Voice of Misfortune struck in times of happiness, other than marriages, birthdays, banquets and festivals. And now, 9th of July, 20 years before 1518 (present time), a prince was born in Multtang, his name was Jeon Hyung Aejun. His life was filled with a series of sad and unfortunate moments, like when he was exiled at the age of 12, all because Hyung Aejun's father burned and ruined his study material, his father wanted him to become a great warrior, not a wise scholar.

Hyung Aejun used to have 5 siblings, two younger brothers and three elder sisters, but there was only one you younger brother left now. Jeon Yong Huoyol, he was, apparently, an accident. Only his brothers and maids used to take care of him, but after Hyung Aejun ran away from exile and started a new life, he was fully in the care of his abusive mother and toxic father, he survived because his birth wasn't celebrated.

Hyung Aejun's birthday was celebrated, but some unknown forces held the voice back, but still, whatever the force was, it clearly helped Hyung Aejun. This happened on each one of his birthday and every party he attended or hosted, the Voice of Misfortune was never even close to him, actually, he was very lucky a lot of times after his exile.

Trickery At Its Finest

Originally, Hyung Aejun was only exiled for 3 years, but he ran away, but he had no real destination in mind. While walking for 8 hours, he encountered the border of Multtang, he almost died from starvation but random strangers helped him, all those kind men had long black hair and a sword on their waist. He was not permitted to leave the border, that was the King's order, so now that the soldiers felt pity for Hyung Aejun, they fed him and kept him for about 18 days when two middle aged men were coming to settle down in Multtang.

Both the men decided to take Hyung Aejun as a disciple, the men were dogani (Taoist in Korean) Songill Yeon So and dogani Park Kyung Hwangwoo, the two men were cultivators, they killed ghosts, purified evil spirits and sealed demons as a loving. The two taught Hyung Aejun all there was to learn, but unfortunately, while Hyung Aejun was away, the Voice of Misfortune struck his instructors. The truth is, the two dogani had defeated a very powerful devil, they were very happy...

Hyung Aejun returned to the hut they used to live in together, he was horrified at the sight of both the dogani standing like zombies, they were possessed by ghosts, so with tears in his eyes and his sword in his hands, he beheaded his own teachers. And since then, Hyung Aejun developed an undying hatred in his heart for whatever creature this, Voice of Misfortune, was. Despite Multtang being the origin, there were no scholars who knew about this, so Hyung Aejun settled on a conclusion, he will travel to Bunyeong and find out the truth.

As a child, Hyung Aejun was fiery and stubborn as a child, considering the fact he even ran away from his royal household, he certainly matured at this age. He calmly approached the King, his father and presented the fact that two strangers were better of a father than him, the least he could do now was to allow Hyung Aejun to leave Multtang for 4 years, "I can assure you that I will return with some, if not much, valuable information." Hyung Aejun suggested peacefully. The King was ashamed, how could he let his own son embarrass him and call him out so easily?

Hyung Aejun departed in the South, which meant he was heading to Chinseon, the King sent a letter to the King of Chinseon with a picture of Hyung Aejun, warning him about this particular "bandit" that was going to be spotted there soon, but still, Hyung Aejun wasn't dumb, he knew that his father would try to pull something like this so he changed plans. He shamelessly took a sharp turn to East, meaning that he was now going to Bunyeong, instead of Yeolban. Because he escaped from his father's view, he was feeling very proud and at ease, and again, the Voice of Misfortune strikes at such petty moments too.
