"Juliet, your assigned colleague will
arrive in seven minutes! Confirm if you received the message!"
Static noise!
Juliet only heard the first half of the
message in her earpiece; a loud interference disrupted the second half.
Now, she had to guess! Was it one minute or
seven minutes?
At this moment, a middle-aged man in a
black trench coat was crossing the street toward her. The man wore a hat and a
mask, revealing only a pair of menacing eyes.
Juliet pretended not to see him and started
walking towards the office building next to her.
She was a rookie cop, having recently
graduated. She had been working in the miscellaneous investigations unit and
was temporarily assigned to the criminal division due to her unfamiliar face to
track a suspect.
The suspect had strong anti-surveillance
skills. The mission was going smoothly until Juliet was about to wrap things
up. A child almost got hit by a red car running a red light, and Juliet rushed
out to pull the child back. When she turned around, she locked eyes with the
suspect.
Perhaps her well-trained reflexes raised
suspicion in the suspect, who then started following her.
Juliet ended up here, and since her
receiver malfunctioned, she had no choice but to enter the office building
beside her.
The suspect followed her inside.
Juliet climbed the stairs and looked up to
see a sign with the words: Civil Affairs Bureau.
Civil Affairs Bureau?
Isn’t this the
place for marriage and divorce?
Taking a deep breath, Juliet braced herself
and ascended the last step, only to be blocked by a tall figure.
Instinctively, she stepped to the left, but
the figure also moved to the left.
Juliet looked up at the person in front of
her. He was tall and imposing, dressed in a well-tailored dark suit. He wore
sunglasses, hiding his eyes, but his features were sharp and commanding.
“You’re three
minutes late!”
The man suddenly spoke, his voice low and
magnetic, yet carrying an immense pressure.
Juliet’s first
thought was: Is this a code phrase?
Has the person arranged by her superiors
arrived?
Seeing her standing still, the man motioned
her to follow.
“Come with me!”
“And don’t be late
again! I’m very busy.”
Bill’s brow furrowed,
his tone and attitude icy, as if Juliet owed him money.
Juliet instinctively followed him, catching
a glimpse of the suspect trailing behind them from the corner of her eye.
“We…”
Juliet started to speak but immediately
realized it wasn’t the right time. She couldn’t say too much now. Her superior had arranged for someone to assist
her, so she just needed to follow.
But Bill was feeling irritated.
For his mother’s
sake, he had come to register a marriage with a woman he had never met.
All because that woman had saved his mother’s life.
His mother insisted on repaying the debt
with his marriage as the exchange!
Knowing his mother couldn’t handle much stress, he had to agree. Besides, everyone in the
family was watching his marriage closely. If he didn’t
agree, someone else would.
However, he had made it clear beforehand:
registering the marriage was fine, but he would only offer financial support,
without any of the duties of a husband!
He also wouldn’t
reveal his true identity, presenting himself as an ordinary person instead.
If he found any flaws in her character
after marriage, he would end it immediately.
Bill glanced at Juliet, who was following
him, not even bothering to see what she looked like.
To him, she was just a future roommate
living under the same roof.
“Your ID. I’ve
arranged a fast track.”
Bill, tall and long-legged, walked ahead
with an emotionless tone. Juliet, with her 168 cm height, had to jog to keep
up.
She looked at Bill’s
back in surprise. The colleague her superior arranged to assist her was too
handsome!
But he seemed a bit older and his
expression was tense. Is he too nervous doing this kind of task for the first
time?
Juliet handed her ID to Bill. He didn’t even look at it, passing it directly to the assistant waiting at
the elevator.
"Go ahead," Bill handed his ID
card to the assistant.
"Yes, Mr. President..."
The assistant was about to say "Mr.
President," but a sharp look from Bill made him swallow the words.
He quickly corrected himself, "Yes,
sir. Please wait a moment."
Wiping cold sweat from his forehead, the
assistant walked ahead. Seeing that the suspect was some distance away, Juliet
lowered her voice and asked, "Is there anything else you need my help
with? Should I just follow you?"
Her voice was so low and sneaky that she
almost seemed like a thief.
Bill frowned.
"Everything is arranged! The marriage
registration is just a formality. But if you're regretting this now, the door
is right in front of you, and you can leave immediately."
Bill's voice was cold, and his expression
was serious.
Is this woman really the perfect
daughter-in-law his mother had spoken about?
Why does she seem so strange? And a bit
pretentious too?
If she didn't want to be here, she
shouldn't have come! And now that she’s here, she's
putting on an act! She better not slip up in front of him!
"Hehe, you're really funny."
Juliet deliberately lifted her face,
flashing a bright smile.
She thought of it as acting for the suspect’s benefit so that he wouldn’t suspect she
was really there for the marriage registration and not following him.
But in Bill's eyes, she had already given
herself away just from a little scare!
This kind of woman couldn’t fool him!
"Mr. Bill, you can go in now."
The assistant returned with their ID cards.
Noticing the tense and awkward atmosphere, he wisely stepped back, waiting
until Bill and Juliet had entered the VIP room before he let out a sigh of
relief.
Once inside the VIP room, Juliet followed
Bill's instructions, taking photos and filling out forms. Bill never once
looked at any of her information; after all, she was just someone he was
marrying to complete the task. He didn’t need to know
too much about her.
Today was also the first time they had met!
All he knew was that she would be wearing a
beige coat and carrying a brown backpack at the entrance of the Civil Affairs
Bureau in the northern part of the city. After the registration, he would go to
a meeting. To him, having a wife wouldn’t affect his
work or life in any way.
Juliet suspiciously filled out all the
information, still thinking this was all arranged by her superiors. After all,
Bill had said it was just a formality, meaning it was supposed to look real
enough to fool the suspect. Otherwise, if the suspect knew he was being
followed, it would be difficult to investigate him further. Juliet pretended to
look around the information board, her pupils suddenly contracting as she
spotted the man in the black trench coat staring at her from a corner.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Juliet
realized she had to go through with this marriage for the investigation and her
own safety. She could get a divorce later. She glanced at the corner again—he was still there! She tugged on Bill's sleeve and glanced at the
corner, "Is the marriage certificate ready?"
A red marriage certificate was tossed in
front of her by Bill.
The registration officer, with a
professional smile, congratulated Juliet, "Miss Juliet, Mr. Bill,
congratulations."
Although she felt that this couple didn't
seem very happy, she continued with the process as usual.
Almost as soon as they received the
certificate, Bill stood up to leave. But when he heard the officer say Juliet’s name, he suddenly turned to look at her.
"Juliet? Who’s
Juliet?" Bill asked, confused.
Juliet: "???"
Officer: "???"
Frowning, Bill opened the red certificate
in his hand, and there, in the bride's column, was the name Juliet.
Bill was stunned.
Was Juliet really the woman he was supposed
to marry? Something didn’t seem right!
Just then, his mother called. Bill
answered, and his mother’s voice came through,
"Bill, did you finish the registration with Honey?"
Bill: "Just finished. I’ll talk to you later."
Bill hung up the phone, his expression
changing. After calming himself, he walked back to the registration officer,
handed over the red certificate, and with a darkened face, said,
"Hello, I want a divorce."
Juliet: "..."
The staff member looked at Bill as if he
were out of his mind.
"I married the wrong person! The one I
was supposed to marry isn’t her!" Bill's voice
grew even lower. Juliet, already irritated, couldn't help but laugh in
disbelief.
"Mister, do you not even know who
you're marrying?"
Juliet didn’t
believe him—was he just toying with her? She realized
now that he wasn’t the colleague her superiors had
arranged to meet her. She had rushed because she was anxious about the suspect
discovering she was an undercover cop.
Bill took a deep breath, trying to suppress
his anger as he looked at Juliet.
"And what about you?"
At this point, Bill assumed Juliet was a
gold-digger who knew his identity. How else could she be dressed exactly like
Honey?
Juliet couldn’t
reveal that she was a cop on a mission. Her silence only strengthened Bill’s suspicions.
He decided that no matter what, he needed
to get rid of her as quickly as possible.
"Get me a divorce certificate!"
Bill demanded again. The staff member, looking troubled, replied, "Sir,
according to Country A's laws, there is a one-month cooling-off period for
divorces."
Bill, surrounded by a cloud of anger,
gritted his teeth and said, "I’m a VIP."
Staff member: "VIP status only lets
you skip the line when getting married, but not for divorces! The system can’t be changed."
Juliet was stunned by what she heard.
A month?
And more importantly, she was now a married
woman?
Just as Juliet was at a loss, she suddenly
saw the suspect approaching them.
Juliet quickly grabbed Bill's arm,
pretending to be full of affection as she leaned in to kiss his cheek.
"I'm a cop, on a mission. The man at your eight o'clock is my target!
Please cooperate."
Bill stood still, trying to pull his arm
away, but Juliet, being an outstanding police academy graduate, managed to hold
on. By the time he tried again, the suspect had already turned and left.
Juliet sighed in relief and let go of Bill.
"Juliet! Do you copy? What's the
situation? Your backup is already at the entrance of the Civil Affairs
Bureau."
At that moment, her superior's voice
finally came through her earpiece.
Covering her ear, Juliet replied in a low
voice, "Captain, the suspect just left. Have my backup follow him
directly. No need to wait for me! He should believe me now."
"Understood! You should leave as
well."
"I can’t leave
right now."
"What happened? Are you injured?"
The captain's voice turned anxious.
Juliet replied, "I accidentally got
married just now."
Captain: "..."
The captain naturally didn’t believe Juliet, but she needed time to explain, so she agreed for
now.
While Juliet was talking to herself,
covering her ear, Bill’s patience had finally reached
its limit.
"Are you done with your act?"
With his height and long legs, Bill stood
before her like a wall, enveloping her in his shadow.
Juliet pulled out her badge from her pocket
and held it up to him.
"I really am a police officer!"
She quickly explained how she had mistaken
him for her backup.
Bill looked at her badge, still skeptical,
but she didn’t seem like someone bold enough to
impersonate a government official.
"You..."
"I need to report back and explain
everything! You keep the marriage certificate for now. Give me your phone
number, and I’ll contact you later to sort this
out!"
Juliet, eager to return, asked for Bill’s number.
Bill didn’t want to
give it to her, but realizing he’d need her cooperation
for the divorce, he decided not to burn bridges and gave her one of his private
numbers.
After noting it down, Juliet turned and ran
out, leaving Bill alone in the VIP room, feeling bewildered.
