- CHARACTERS INTRODUCTION -
Name: Jared Lawson
Age: 17
Personality: Confident, athletic, and well-liked, Jared is the star of the basketball team and has always fit the mold of the popular guy. On the outside, he seems to have everything—charm, looks, and social status. However, beneath the surface, Jared feels the weight of others’ expectations, constantly struggling to keep up his image. He’s loyal, fiercely protective of his friends, and has a hidden sensitive side. Jared's relationship with Theo challenges his understanding of himself and forces him to reevaluate who he really is, outside the persona he's created.
Name: Theo Martin
Age: 17
Personality: Quiet, intelligent, and introverted, Theo is an academic prodigy who spends most of his time with his head buried in books or tinkering with tech in the school's computer lab. He’s often overlooked by his peers and has learned to live in the background, using his intelligence as a shield. Despite his reserved nature, Theo is kind-hearted, thoughtful, and surprisingly witty once he opens up. He has spent his life avoiding attention, and Jared’s interest forces him out of his comfort zone in a way that is both thrilling and terrifying.
Name: Ryan Carter
Age: 18
Personality: Jared’s teammate and former best friend, Ryan is the classic jock with a loud mouth and a tendency to say what everyone else is thinking. He’s not a bad guy, but he’s resistant to change and has trouble accepting anything that deviates from the norm. Ryan’s initial reaction to Jared and Theo’s relationship is one of skepticism, but over time, he comes to terms with it, though it takes some nudging from his friends.

THE GLANCE
Jared King moved through the halls of Linwood High like he owned the place. In a way, he did. With his six-foot-two frame, messy blond hair that looked effortlessly styled, and a smile that could melt hearts, he was the poster boy for popularity.
Girls clung to his every word, and guys either wanted to be him or be seen with him. He thrived in the chaos—the attention, the admiration. It was his world, and everyone else was just living in it.
Today was no different. As he made his way to practice, his basketball slung over his shoulder, people parted for him like the Red Sea. He didn’t even notice it anymore. His mind was already in the big game coming up that Friday—another victory to secure his reputation.
It wasn’t much at first, just a flash of dark hair and glasses sitting at the far end of the hallway, his back hunched over a notebook. Jared had seen him before, of course—Theo Park, the school nerd.
He wasn’t invisible by any means, but he definitely flew under the radar. People knew him more for his smarts than anything else. He aced every test, kept his head down, and hung around with the other brainy kids in the tech lab.
Jared’s footsteps slowed, his attention drifting to Theo more than it should have. Theo didn’t notice. He was lost in whatever he was scribbling—probably some math formula or complex code Jared wouldn’t bother trying to understand.
Theo’s dark, messy hair fell into his face, and the way he absently pushed it back revealed more of his soft features. His expression was one of pure concentration, as though the noise and chaos of the hallway didn’t exist for him.
Jared frowned, shaking off the thought.
Jared Lawson
Why was I staring?💭
It wasn’t the first time he’d noticed Theo, but it was the first time he found himself... lingering. Something about the guy piqued his curiosity, though he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what.
Maybe it was the quiet way Theo existed in a space Jared usually dominated with ease. While Jared thrived on being the center of attention, Theo seemed content to fade into the background.
As Jared passed, his gaze was still drawn to Theo, something in him bristled.
Jared Lawson
Why do you care?💭
Jared Lawson
He’s just some geek.💭
But the thought didn’t stick. It floated away, leaving a strange sense of unease.
Later, in the locker room, surrounded by the sound of guys shouting and the metallic clang of lockers slamming, Jared couldn’t shake the image of Theo. It was ridiculous.
Out of all the things he could be thinking about—the game, the next party, his latest fling—why was he suddenly fixated on the school's nerdiest guy?
THE GLANCE (2)
Ryan Carter
Are you good, man?
Ryan, his best friend and the team’s power forward, slapped Jared’s shoulder, pulling him out of his daze.
Jared blinked, forcing a grin.
Jared Lawson
Yeah, just thinking about Friday.
Jared Lawson
We’re going to crush it.
Ryan Carter
Hell yeah, we are!
Ryan Carter
You’ll be the MVP again for sure. Scouts from the State are going to be watching.
Jared nodded, but his mind was elsewhere, far from basketball. That nagging feeling wouldn’t leave. For the rest of the day, he found himself stealing glances down the halls, subconsciously looking for Theo, wondering what the hell had shifted inside him after that fleeting moment.
By the time school let out, Jared had convinced himself it was nothing. He was just bored, that was all. Theo was just another face in the crowd, another kid trying to get through high school without drawing attention.
But as he walked out to the parking lot, something made him glance back toward the front doors. Sure enough, there was Theo, standing alone as he rummaged through his bag.
His glasses slipped down his nose, and he pushed them back up with a sigh. It was such a small, insignificant gesture, but for some reason, it caught Jared’s attention again.
Ryan Carter
Dude, What are you looking at?
Ryan called from the driver’s seat of his car, waiting for Jared to hop in.
Jared blinked, quickly turning away.
Jared Lawson
Nothing, just thinking.
Ryan Carter
Yeah, right, come on, let's go.
Jared climbed into the car, brushing off the strange feeling that had settled in the pit of his stomach. It didn’t make sense. None of it did. But that didn’t stop his mind from wandering back to Theo Park, the quiet kid who lived in a world so different from his own.
As Ryan pulled out of the lot, Jared stared out the window, his reflection looking back at him. He wasn’t sure what had started in that hallway today, but something had shifted, and Jared King wasn’t the type to let things go unanswered.
And why couldn't he stop thinking about it?
