Eli, an 18-year-old orphan, sat in his small room surrounded by the tattered pages of novels. His favorite book, “The Light,” had just concluded, and he was in a storm of emotions. The novel’s female protagonist, Vivian Kingsley, was beloved for her radiant light. Yet, it was the villain Elijah Kingsley, who captivated Eli. To Eli, Elijah was a misunderstood soul, wronged and abandoned, whose life was marked by tragic fate rather than villainy. The book’s climax, with Elijah’s death, left Eli fuming at the author for his treatment of the character.
As Eli drifted to sleep, exhausted and disheartened by the story’s end, a strange sensation overwhelmed him. When he awoke, he found himself in a cold, unfamiliar environment. His hands were shackled, and a crowd’s murmurs filled the air. Disoriented, Eli soon realized he had been thrust into the world of “The Light” as Elijah Kingsley himself—just as the execution was about to commence.
