A young lady could be seen riding a scooter on the roads, late in the evening. She had a pink helmet over her head for protection.
The road was quiet, but she was not scared even though she found it somehow off. This particular road was not always busy around 07:00 PM, but some cars still pass by around that time.
As she rode her scooter, she could see a blaring light from the vehicle ahead. She could tell the vehicle had stopped in the middle of the road. But because of the lights from the headlamps, she couldn't see things clearly.
But as she approached the car to some close distance, she almost screened in shock.
She discovered that she has met with a hit and run incident.
The bonnet of the car she was staring at, was damaged beyond repair. The windscreen of the car was shattered. And in the driver seat, she saw a grey-haired man with his face down on the steering.
She was so scared as she got down from her scooter and approached the damaged vehicle.
She almost screened out of shock when she stepped on the broken glasses at the scene.
When she got to the driver's side, she discovered the Old Man still had his eyes opened, and was bleeding from his head. And he was too weak to say anything...
He managed to glance at the young Lady and made light movements with his fingers.
The young lady had her mouth covered with her hands as she stared at the old man in shock. Just now when the Old Man looked at her with his bloodied face, he looked scary.
Now coming back to her senses, the young lady muttered in an incoherent tone as she took out her phone from the pocket of her jacket.
"That's riiiiight... I..I need to...to call the Ambu...lance."
She input a short string of numbers and dialed it.
She was so scared while dialing the number, and she could feel chills in her spine.
After reporting the emergency and giving out the location, the young lady closed her cellphone and returned it into her pocket before rushing back to the car.
Seeing that the Old Man's eyes were still open, she waved her hands in his view as she called out to him with a frantic facial expression on her face.
"Hello, Sir! Are you Okay? Can you hear me?." She asked in a scared and worried tone.
The Old Man stared at her, but his vision was blurry, and he was slowly losing strength. But to show that he heard her voice, even though it was faint, he moved his fingers.
From what the Old Man could make out from her looks, he could tell that she was a young lady in her early twenties.
"Thank Goodness!." The young lady said, slightly relieved.
"My name is Jia Li, and I have called the ambulance, they will be here in five minutes. Please hold on." Jia Li said to him in a strong tone.
Even though she was scared out of her wits, she still needed to keep the man conscious till the Ambulance arrived.
At least, growing up with her mother-nurse and being at the local hospital most times, has taught her a lot of things.
The Old Man was quite strong to still be conscious after the accident that happened over ten minutes ago.
I mean, considering how serious the accident was, and his age, he should have passed out on the spot, or minutes ago. But he was still conscious, even though he was currently struggling to stay conscious to await the medics.
A minute later as Jia Li was keeping the Old Man company so he wouldn't fall asleep before the medics arrived, she heard the sound of the Ambulance, and she smiled with hope in her eyes.
"Sir, the Ambulance is here!." Jia Li announced the Old Man as her eyes radiated joy.
The Old Man who was almost slipping into the realm of unconsciousness, reacted when he saw her actions of saying something and pointing in another direction where he saw the incoming ambulance.
Right in this state, the Old Man couldn't hear any sounds, as his senses were slowly fading away.
He couldn't even hear the hurried footsteps of the medics as they arrived before him, but he could still see their blurry images as they checked him out before moving him to the Ambulance.
As they were busy carrying the man out, a brown leather wallet fell out from his back pocket. Jia Li saw the wallet and picked it up before chasing after them.
"Are you his Family Member?." One of the Medics asked her as the others laid the Old Man down inside the Ambulance.
"No..." Jia Li answered softly.
Seeing how worried she was about the accident victim, one of the medics who was a female said to them.
"Allow her to join us."
With that, Jia Li was allowed into the Ambulance. But then, she glanced at her scooter and the scene.
"Don't worry, the Police will keep your scooter safe, and they will come to the hospital to get a statement from you." The Female Medic said to her as one of them placed an Oxygen Mask on the Old Man.
Looking at the old Man, Jia Li was a bit scared.
'It seems like he not only got a head injury.' Jia Li said to herself as she took a good look at the old man while the medics got to work.
Then, her sight moved outside the vehicle, and she saw the police vehicles approaching the accident scene.
Jia Li felt pity for the Old Man, because she lost her grandfather in a hit and run accident few years ago. That incident left a scar in her heart, because she was quiet close to her Old man.
He was hit by a drunken driver in the evening when he was out for a stroll.
Her old Man died, but the drunken driver survived... Irony of Life.
When they got to the hospital, the Old Man was rushed to the theater immediately, while Jia Li sat in the corridor to wait.
She looked worried as she glanced at the closed doors of the theater. But there was nothing she could rather than sit, pray, hope, and wait patiently.
She almost felt like cursing the families of the old man for allowing him to drive himself by that time of the day.
Something kicked in Jia Li's mind as she thought about the Old Man's family.
How will I contact his family?
Are they looking for him already?
With all these thoughts coming forth like the waves from the sea, she suddenly remembered that she picked a wallet from the ground at the scene of the accident.
She checked her pocket for it, but she found her cell phone instead. Then she checked the other pocket and found it.
She didn't know if what she was about to do was right, searching someone else's property without permission, and she was not even the police.
But considering the situation, she had to see if there was a way to reach the Old Man's family in case they were worried sick and looking for at the moment.
Opening the brown leather wallet, she found an ID card, which belongs to the man. She took it out and checked for the details, and discovered that it was a resident Identity Card, which means she might not be able to find any contact that might be to his relation.
Taking a careful look at the details of his ID Card, she discovered that the man was surnamed Fu, and there was a 'Gen.' before his surname, 'Fu'. And the passport on the ID she discovered he was putting on a military uniform.
'Is he a soldier?.' Jia Li thought before going to the next details and discovered his resident address, so she smiled, thinking that she would find answers soon. But she was disappointed when she saw the address written on the ID.
The resident address was situated in City X, which was a very far city from the countryside/village they were currently at. And since she was born, she has never heard the name of that address before.
Jia Li was a bit disappointed, because the address was so far away, and wasn't something she could reach even if she tried.
"But What is this grandfather doing here alone when he has a house in such a nice city?." Jia Li wondered as she put the ID card back into her pocket. Alll 𝒍𝒂test nov𝒆l𝒔 on novelb𝒊n/(.)c𝒐m
While sitting there and waiting, she forgot to call home to inform her father she would be home late because of her encounter.
As she was sitting there with her gaze locked on the door. She heard rushed approaching footsteps, so she looked over and so a familiar figure rushing to her side.
"Mum?." She called out in a soft tone.
"Jia Li, are you hurt?." The older woman in a nurse uniform asked as she checked her daughter out with a worried look on her face.
"Mum, I'm fine!." Jia Li assured her mother as she was starting to get dizzy from all the shaking.
"Ah! You scared me to death. But are you sure you are okay?." The woman asked again to be sure. She still looked worried.
"Yes Mum, I'm fine. It's the grandfather I came in with that is injured. He is in the theater now." Jia Li explained as she pointed at the tightly shut doors of the operation room.
"What happened, how come you are with an injured grandfather?." The woman asked with a sharp look as she gazed at her daughter.
Jia Li was a bit scared explaining the to her because she took a big risk. But it was not like saying the truth would get her killed. So she went all out and explained everything to her.
"You...you. What if you got in trouble? Do you know the kind of situation you would have gotten yourself into, in a hit and run accident?." The woman asked as she hit her back.
"Ah! Mum! I was only trying to save a life!." Jia Li cried out as she moved away from her mother's side.
"You were trying to save a life when you would have gotten our family in trouble?." The woman asked angrily.
"But you taught me that. You said that saving lives was important and should be a daily act." Jia Li reminded her.
Her mother was speechless.
Her daughter's reminder was an absolute truth. If she was the one in that situation, she would have saved the old man without thinking twice, because it was in her nature.
But admonishing her child, was because she was worried about her safety.
"Next time, don't just rush to help people in this type of situation. You have to be careful, and call the police." She reminded her after sitting on the bench.
"Yes, Mum!. But mum, how did you know I was here?." Jia Li asked, after not recalling dialing her number.
"Nurse Li informed me she saw you come in with the Ambulance, and I was so scared out of my wits thinking something might have happened to you. But it's good that you are okay." Her mother said to her.
"Oh! Mum, I was supposed to make dinner for Dad, but I was caught up with something." Jia Li said with a smile.
Her mother glared at her. "I will make the call." She said to her before stepping out to make the call.
As she stepped out, some people in uniform came to find Jia Li, they were the police people in the district.
"Hello, Miss! We are the..." One of the policemen greeted Jia Li, introduced himself and his colleagues, before going down to business.
They came to get a statement from Jia Li about the hit and run incident the Old Mr. Fu was involved in.
Just as Jia Li was about to respond, her mother came back and blocked her from the view of the policemen in a protective manner.
She introduced herself to them as a nurse in the hospital, and as Jia Li's mother.
Just as Jia Li was about to respond, her mother came back and blocked her from the view of the policemen in a protective manner.
She introduced herself to them as a nurse in the hospital, and as Jia Li's mother.
"Mrs. Qin we are from the district. We came to get a statement from Miss. Qin, we mean no harm." One of the policemen said to her.
Only then did Mrs. Qin relax.
Jia Li recounted the incident on how she met the injured Old Man.
"The victim's identity is special. He must have come from a military family, or he is a retired military officer." The policeman said to them.
In Old Mr. Fu's Mercedes Benz, the police officers found a military chain and his cell phone which was damaged in the crash. So they won't be able to make calls to reach his family.
"Officer is there a way to contact his family, at least to inform them of his condition?." Mrs. Qin asked.
"His phone was damaged in the crash, and there is nothing to trace his family with till we fix the cell phone. The reporters could help his family reach us, through the news channels and radio stations." The policeman said.
"Officer, this belongs to the Old Man." Jia Li said as she took the leather wallet out from her bag and passed it to them.
"How did you get it?." The policeman asked as the other two shifted close to him, so they could also take a look at the content of the wallet.
"It fell out from the back pocket of the Grandfather." Jia Li reported as the office opened the wallet and took out the ID card in it.
Seeing the name on the ID, the policeman looked shocked before passing the ID to his colleagues.
Having noticed the sudden change in their facial expressions, Jia Li looked worried as she asked, "Is something wrong?."
"Nothing is wrong. But there is good news. We can get to General Fu's family this night or tomorrow morning." The head policeman reported with a brightened facial expression.
"Oh! This is good news. At least the Grandfather will not have to be pitiful." Jia Li said happily.
"Mrs. Qin, we have to leave now to report to the higher-ups. But officer Su will be here for security reasons." The head Officer said as he pointed at the younger colleague.
Mrs. Qin nodded at them before they left.
Officer Su stood at the side with his gaze on the theater room.
"Jia Li, I have to leave now. If you need anything, come to me immediately." Mrs. Qin said to her daughter before turning to look at Officer Su.
On a normal, Mrs. Qin would have sent her daughter home after, but she knew she wouldn't listen to her because she was worried about the old man, so she let her be.
After her mother left, Jia Li took her phone out to check the time. She sighed and put her phone back inside her pocket as she glanced at the tightly shut doors.
Thirty minutes later, Old Mr. Fu was wheeled out of the theater and Jia Li rushed to his side and called out to him...
"Grandfather!." She looked worried as she called out to him, but his eyes were tightly shut.
"Doctor, how is he?." Office Su asked the doctor after glancing at the old man.
"He is fine now but will be conscious for a few hours. He had a slight concussion and injuries on some parts of his bodies which requires stitches. But the Old man is quite strong for people of his age." The doctor said as they continued to wheel the old man till they got to award.
"Miss, are you his family member?." The doctor asked Jia Li.
"You can take me as one." Jia Li replied with her gaze on the old Man.
No matter how strong the doctor said he was, Jia Li didn't believe it. She has always had a soft spot for aged people because she once had one.
She felt that Old Mr. Fu was pitiful, and must have gone through serious pains during the car accident.
She wished the perpetrator would be caught and punished by the law. Now thinking of that aspect, she turned to ask the officer...
"Officer Su has the culprit been caught?."
"Not yet. But soon, he will be caught." Officer Su replied.
"Dr, Mr. Fu has a special identity, please we would need you to take care of him." Officer Su, said to the doctor.
The doctor gazed at the police after and thought for a while.
He was thinking if the patient was a witness to a crime, and as if he knew what he was thinking, Officer Su, cleared the air immediately.
"Old Mr. Fu is a retired soldier, and he was involved in a hit and run accident, so his identity is a little special."
Officer Su did not divulge the whole truth. He didn't disclose to the doctor that Old Mr. Fu was in fact a retired General in the army and not just a soldier.
"I see. We will do our best to take care of him." The doctor replied.
"Thank you!." Officer Su said.
"It's our job!." The doctor replied.
The doctor took one last look at Old Fu before leaving the ward.
There were other patients in the ward that were recovering.
"Miss, you are sure you don't want to go home, I will stay here to watch over him if you are worried." Officer Su said to Jia Li now they were left alone.
Jia Li glanced at the Old Man before taking a sit.
"Don't worry officer, I will look after this Grandfather till his owners come for him." Jia Li promised.
Officer Su sighed before saying to her, "If there is anything, I'm right outside this door."
And with that, he disappeared.
Jia Li went close to Old Mr. Fu's bed. Although the man was sleeping peacefully, she still pitied him because he had gone through a lot.
"Grandfather don't worry, your family will find you soon."
