Before You Go

Chapter 1.

Sophia's POV:

"Please take a seat. What's your name again?" The interviewer, Mr. Kenley asks as I take a seat at the other end of the desk in an empty room at the McQuick-Pick restaurant.

"I am Miss Perfect."

"That's a confident statement, but that alone isn't going to fetch you a job."

"No, Mr. Kenley. I'm actually Ms. Perfect, Sophia Perfect."

"That's a funny name."

"By that I mean unusual, but a good one." He changes his statement as he sees me glaring at him. Am I intimidating?

"Why should I hire you at McQuick-Pick?" He asks as he continues with the interview.

"I am highly responsible and I am very much involved in serving people."

"Why do you want the job?"

"I am in my last year of college and my mother works two shifts just so that she can afford a menial lifestyle for both of us. I'm almost 23 and I think it's high time and I need to pay my own bills to take some amount of burden off of her shoulders." I reply as I see him writing down certain things on the notepad he's holding in his hands.

"How did the interview go?" The girl slightly opening and peeking through the door of the room where my interview is going on asks, before coming into the room. That's Olivia Miller, my best friend with voice as sweet as sugar, a soul as soft as a feather, dark brown eyes that sparkle with concern, perfect porcelain skin that lights up everytime she smiles and long brown hair which are always flowing down her shoulders like a river.

"It's still going on, O!" I exclaim as I get distracted from my interview just to get her out of that very room.

"How's it going?"

"It was going pretty good till you came in."

"You kiss your mother with that mouth."

"That's not how the phrase is used, O! I've told you that like a thousand times, literally. I don't have time for this, I'll meet you outside in a few."

"Few, what? Seconds? Minutes? Hours? Day? We-"

"I will kill you without hesitation." I say. Don't get me wrong, this is not how we usually talk. I am a very warm person in general.

"In a few minutes. Gotcha!" She says as she closes the door while trying to make as less sound as possible. Then again, she trips on the doormat on her way out and bumps her head into the wall making as much noise as possible.

Olivia's a supportive friend and has good intentions but what she does is the total opposite. I am thankful to her since she's the one who got me an interview for this job. Her mother orders food from here very often, so Mr. Kenley knows her mother and Olivia very well since she was 5.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Kenley! If you don't want to hire me, I totally get that and I respect your decision." I say as I turn back to the interview.

"You're hired."

"What?"

"You're the only person who has at least the qualification of a 5th grader. You're good to go."

"When do I start?"

"Right about-" He pauses for 3 minutes.

"Now!" He continues as the clock strikes 10 am.

"The uniform is at the counter. The lady with a badge that says Ernie will tell you exactly what to do." He says as he points towards a counter through the window at the back of the same room.

"Thank you, Mr. Kenley! I promise I won't disappoint you!"

"Promises are for suckers! You just do what she tells you to do."

I leave the room closing the door behind me, ensuring that there's no one around the corridor, I dance like I got extra fries with my burger.

"There you are!" Olivia exclaims with nervousness and excitement.

"How did it go?" She asks as she steps back a little away from me, thinking about my reaction to the last time she asked the same question.

"I got selected!" I yell as I rush towards her after saying this to hug her.

"How're you feeling?"

"I was having this strange feeling in my chest. At first, I thought it was a heart attack, turns out it's pride. I'm a freaking grownup, O!" I exclaim with excitement as I start jumping. Then, Olivia starts jumping with me too. It's amazing how she finds bliss in my happiness.

"You are my best friend, you know that right?" I ask her.

"I do!" She says as she hugs me tightly.

"Are you girls done?" A lady shouts from the counter. I can guess that the woman is Ernie.

"I gotta go. Meet you here at 8 pm when my shift's over?" I ask Olivia to which she replies with a nod as I walk towards the counter to get my uniform which was placed on a burger apparently, while Olivia takes her purse to walk back to her home.

"You guys are really cute!" Ernie says as I get back with my uniform on me.

"We are, aren't we?" I say with a smile.

"Moment's over. Nobody cares. Get back to work before the evening rush hour starts." She replies in a commanding tone.

Is she always this rude? That reply was real moody, but also sassy so, I'm going to save it for later. Well, I do exactly as she says because I really don't want any problem on my first day at work because really, nobody does!

Just as Ernie mentioned, the evening rush hour started in a couple of minutes and the room which felt like a loner's birthday party a few moments ago was now filled with kids at birthday parties in different corners, couples occupying tables in large numbers and joint families snatching chairs from other people.

"Kind ma'am, could you please return this seat to the old lady?" A waitress says while serving at one of the tables to a woman snatching a chair from an old lady.

"For God's sake! She's in a wheelchair, she wouldn't be needing it!" The woman replies.

Woah! People can be so mean. She could've said that in a calm manner, or was it necessary to spill ketchup all over the floor to explain her side of the story.

Also, most importantly, as I was the new one, Ernie gave the task of cleaning up that mess to me. After doing all that, all I had to do was fetch takeouts for vehicles on the other side of the restaurant.

"Get this one for Mr. Davis!" Ernie yelled from the other corner of the kitchen.

"That's a huge one, and it's a takeout?" I say as I take a look at a plate in front of me with food completely loaded on it. I hope that person has company or at least a gym near his home.

"This happens during rush hour! I warned you about this earlier, kid."

"But-"

"He's been waiting a long time. Go get the order!"

I took the order and walked towards the Takeout Window through the hustle and bustle. I should've learned juggling when I had the chance because if I get hit and it gets tossed in the air, I am not responsible for ketchup on your Gucci.

"Window's jammed!" Harry says. He is the one who actually manages takeouts.

"From where should I give this, then?"

"Open the door."

Damn! If I had known it was going to be this hard, I would have just gone for tutoring sessions. Teaching maths to kids who smoke weed and half of the time aren't aware if the Earth's moving or the textbook's moving, is still better than cleaning gross and sticky things on a daily basis. I open the door with my elbow as my hands are already full.

*Bump*

"Ouch!" I cry with pain as I fell with a thud onto a motor bike due to imbalance.

"What the hell?!" A woman shouts making me snap out of my train of thoughts.

Shit! What have I done? The bike I fell upon crashed into the door of another car. Calm down, Soph! It's just a car that looks more expensive than you. No need to feel inferior or scared! It's my first day at my first job and I haven't even received my first pay check yet and here I am.

"Where's your manager?" The woman whose car's door I just broke, yelled.

"What happened, ma'am?" Mr. Kenley asks as soon as he hears that woman.

"This girl right here, I believe is an employee of yours?"

"Sure is."

"She just broke my boss's car's door. It's my first day as his assistant and she just ruined it!"

"Ma'am, why don't you calm down a little and we can sort it out?"

"I didn't do it intentionally." I whisper into his ears.

"I know, I'll handle it." He replies as he takes that lady inside to talk it out with her.

Mom would be so mad. What if I get fired for this? Olivia will never help me get another job, I know that I'll just ruin everything again. This wouldn't look good on my resume either. The main disaster is that I'd have to pay for the damage that I unintentionally caused. I can hear some disagreement in their conversation, but I can't hear it clearly. I sit down at the pavement just beside the very door that led me into all of this.

*10 minutes later*

"It's all sorted." Mr. Kenley says as he walks out along with that woman through the door.

"What is it?" I ask with nervousness.

"It's all forgive-"

"Oh, Jesus! Thank-"

"YOU JUST HAVE TO PAY HER $10,000."

Yay! I'm so glad I finally started writing this story!

This was just an idea I came up with 2 years ago and I can still feel chills running down my spine every time I think about this one!

It's my own little darling! The one thing, I am deeply proud of!

I hope you guys liked this chapter!

If you did, give it a big, fat like and comment what you thought about it!!!

Chapter 2.

"With all due respect, Mr. Kenley, I don't think you quite got the part where I told you that my mother works two shifts. It's not because she likes to work herself to complete exhaustion, it's because we need that little amount of money to 'survive'. Where would I get $10,000?" I ask as I stammer.

"Your first pay check for the month would be of the amount $1000. You'll be able to pay her in about 10 months."

"How the heck does a car door cost this much?" I ask the lady who is still pretty mad I broke her boss's toy.

"It's a Mercedes-AMG One."

Who told her boss to take this 'rare model' for a spin around the town? I don't know what I could possibly do. It's time like these that I require my mother to have my back.

"Can I get all those pay checks today?" I ask Mr. Kenley as I put on my cute puppy dog face.

"I promise I'll work for you for 10 months without taking any leave!" I ensure him.

"I am not even sure if I'll even live to see my wife this evening. How do you expect me to give you 10 months' salary in advance?" He says. I hate to admit it, but he is right. He's in the shape of the offspring of a potato and a pear so, it's not really confirmed whether he would be even here to give me my paycheck. Weird, right?

"I'll pay you the compensation in instalments and I apologize for my mistake."

"My boss might get here any second! What the hell am I supposed to do?" She replies.

"What can I possibly do about it? You are the one who is his assistant!"

"And you're the one who broke his car, so tell me something I don't know!"

"What's going on?" A man asks with a husky voice, making me look at the person standing in front of me, who is tall in physique, has chiselled facial features, light brown eyes and dark brown hair and is apparently wearing a fancy suit.

"Mr. Davis, this idiot of a woman-"

"What exactly happened, Tanya?" He asks his assistant as I see him scanning my facial features as if he's going to get me sketched at the Police Station. Then, he looks at his watch as if he's getting late and he needs to be somewhere.

"I ensure you that I'll pay you!"

"Yeah, you're going to pay in instalments. How is that going to get this car fixed, right now?" Tanya fights back.

"Nothing is going to get this car fixed right now! Get your head out of your ***! Fixing this car will take at least 6 days." I explain.

"Shut the hell up!" She replies in a furious tone.

"Tanya, call another car driver from home and tell him to meet us here. I'll talk to the warm and welcoming lady over here." He says as he walks towards me.

"I'm Aldrin Davis."

"Sophia Perfect." I say as I extend my hand towards him.

"Germaphobe."

"I'm so sorry for what I did, sir."

He walks even closer after he hears me apologize, close enough that I could feel him breathing on me. Woah! He's good-looking even this up close and we were just a few inches away.

"Did you have nachos?" I ask. I think I smell nachos from his scent.

"What?" He asks, puzzled.

"Just asking."

"Meet me at this building at 7:30 pm, sharp or you'll lose your last chance to explain yourself in this situation and I will call the police." He whispers into my ear, warning me as he hands over his business card to me that he took out from his coat.

"But, I'll still be working by then." I say as I move away from him to resist him.

"Does it look like I give a single damn?" He asks as he walks away fom me.

Now, I definitely know how to resist him, I just need to remember what kind of a jerk he is. What does he think of himself? Setting himself up on a high pedestal! I mean, I'd like to thank him for the opportunity to at least hear me out cause that assistant of hers wasn't even letting me move my lips, continuously barking.

I don't know how I'll explain this to my mom. She's really understanding, but not at such a level that she'll let this go that easily. She still thinks I'm a kid which is why it took her this long to even permit me to get a part-time job for this summer. She permitted me to get a job only if I created no trouble and I just did that. I was guarded by Mr. Kenley because he knows Olivia and I am her best friend, but I know that I am done!

I know that I have no other option except for going to meet that egocentric man in that building. It's only half an hour left before the clock strike 7:30 pm. Those selfish jerks wasted our time, which means that I won't be getting my salary for the past hour. Amazing! I'll have to work extra hours to my collegebills as well, might as well die. Gosh! Kill me already!

"So, I have to go to this building named Davis Corporation." I murmur.

"That place isn't far from our locality. You should be able to leave in an hour or so, if you want to reach there on time." Mr. Kenley says with genuine concern on his face.

"Thank you, Mr. Kenley and I apologize again for creating trouble for you on my very first day of work."

"All that matters right now is that you are trying to make it right." He replies. He seems like a really nice guy who is forgiving and a person who lets bygones be bygones.

After that, I rush inside to help out Ernie.

*20 minutes later*

That was about it. I cleaned up the mess created by the 1 year old birthday boy who doesn't even know how to say anything except for 'googoogaagaa'. He doesn't even know he turned 1 and how does a one year even make friends? I am 22 and I don't even have an F of FRIENDS. However, I have an O of OLIVIA and I am grateful for her. It's almost 7 pm, I should go, so that I can reach there on time.

"Ernie, I'll be going now."

"Good! Leave all your jobs to me." She replies sarcastically.

"Thanks, Ernie! I"ll see you tomorrow." Harry says.

"I didn't mean it, you idiot. Get your *** over here!"

I remove my apron, pick up my bag and walk out the restaurant. I move towards the main street, sticking my hand out to call for a taxi.

"Where would you like to go?" The taxi driver in a taxi that stopped in front of me says.

I hand him the card as he changes the gear and off we go.

*After 25 minutes*

"We've reached, ma'am." The driver says. I get out of the car and and pay him the necessary fare.

Holy Mother of God! This building is huge. I can see a tall blue building with 54 floors, I guess. I enter the building with my head down, trying not to get noticed. As if feeling out of place in college wasn't enough, now I'm feeling like an alien in a crowded place.

The business card that I have, has 'Davis Corporation' written over it, so by that, I guess that the egoistical man I met is the owner or the heir and the name was Aladdin, I think?

"Is there any Aladdin Davis here?" I ask the lady behind the counter as I reach the reception area.

"Do you mean Aldrin Davis? The owner of this company?" She tries to confirm as she chuckles.

Damn! I can be so stupid sometimes.

"Yeah, Aldrin Davis. I am looking for him."

"What is your name, ma'am?"

"Sophia Perfect."

"I'll tell him you're here, ma'am. Please wait over there." She says as she points towards the couch a few steps away. I take a seat and try to guess what she's saying to him on the phone. I get up as soon as I hear her call out my name and rush towards the reception.

"Go to the 15th floor, take a right from the elevator and you'll reach his cabin."

"Thank you!" I say as I walk my way to the elevator. I did exactly as she said and I am here. I knock and I'm asked to come in. That shitty assistant is here.

"Mr. Aldrin Davis would be here with you in a few minutes." She says as she walks out the door herself.

So now, what am I supposed to do? Sit here all by myself? There's enough time to research about him a little before sitting all alone with him in this room.

Father owned the company and passed it onto him at a very young age and he died of a heart disease and his mother's a public figure, a motivational speaker and a charitable person. Oooh! Good stuff! There are empty photo frames all around the room. He might not be photogenic. Are those law books?

I get up from my seat and turn back so that I could look around the room a little bit more.

*Bump*

"I'm sorry." I say as I see him standing in front of me.

"God! You're clumsy."

"I apologise, Mr. Davis."

"Mr. Davis was my father."

"And he's dead, but you aren't which is why you're here talking to me and apparently listening to me babble and that is going to stop in 1, 2 and 3."

"Yeah, I would prefer that." He says as he takes a seat across the table.

"So, why exactly am I here?"

"For compensation."

"I told you that I'd pay the remuneration in instalments."

"I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT MONEY."

I know what you talking about Aldrin. You pervert! Just kidding oR Am i?

Chapter 3.

"No! No way! Not at all! I'd rather die than stooping down to that level just to pay the money!" I retort, slamming my fists down onto the table in a fit of rage.

"I am talking about fake marriage."

"Huh?" I ask, confused as I rub my fists. I shouldn't have hit the table that hard.

"I've been trying to adopt a kid for some while now and the people at the adoption centre have been keeping me on hold. When I finally got the chance, they said I need a partner to adopt one."

"You look like you're 26 or something. Why do you want a kid?"

"I am 25, thank you. You just need to that it's urgent and nothing more about it."

"You would be needing me, right? So, I need to know."

"I'm sorry, I don't like kids enough to have one."

"Then, it's a good thing that I'm not asking."

"There are other girls better than me who might actually be willing to marry you unlike me."

"Well, you happen to be in my debt and I suggest that this is a way you can get out of this."

"I'd work for you my whole life, but I still wouldn't do this. You could torment the people over whom you have control."

"I could, but I choose you." He says as he lays back on his seat.

"So, you'll force me into marrying you?"

"Pretty much, yeah!"

"I'll pay off the debt, I said so."

"What if I say, I need the money right now?"

"Then, that's your problem!"

"You do it or I'll do what's necessary to get things done."

"Ooh! I am scared!"

"By some research done by my assistant, it's $9,000, right?"

"$9,000?"

"Your house's price. It's pretty old and cheap, don't you think so? Also, you have a working mother! Your mother would have to sell it off and you'll still owe me $1,000! She wouldn't blame you, but deep inside you'll always know that it was your fault. Your mother's happiness being ripped apart at the cost of what? Your whims and fancies getting fulfilled."

"What are you talking about?"

"The money doesn't matter that much, but the adoption does. I'm in a desperate state right now and I will crumble your life if I need to. You have time till 7:30 pm tomorrow, if you decide anything, I'll show you the contract that we'd be following. Now, leave."

"I wasn't going to stay here anyway." I say as I turn back and walk ahead so that I can process all the things that have happened to me today.

*Bump*

"I didn't see the transparent glass door. Next time, maybe replace them with translucent ones?" I add as I walk out. Jesus! This guy has some weird obsession with 7:30 pm.

This day is even worse than the time in kindergarten when Lily Petsch won first place in the Poetry competition and I won second place. Her poem was about potty training. Her topic was so kiddish, and I am going to completely ignore the fact that we were actually kids. God! I hate it when such things happen to me.

Also, I wonder why he's not telling me why he's willing to adopt a kid. I mean, he could do that by the usual process. Since when did adopting a kid became an urgency? I know that I am not exactly a friend to him, hell, I'm hardly an acquaintance, but if I'm involved, I need to know. After all of this, I could think of only one person with whom I could pour my heart out openly, Olivia which is why I call her immediately.

*On call*

"What's up P-Dawg?" Olivia asks as she still thinks that I am working at McQuick-Pick right now.

"I'm fine." I say as I walk into the elevator and press the ground floor button.

"Say it."

"No." I say as I reach the ground floor and walk out towards the exit.

"I know you want to!" She insists.

"What's up O-bro?" I drawl.

"What happened?"

"The multi-billionaire, Aldrin Davis-"

"Oh my god! I've been waiting for this day since 1970!"

"That's 25 years before you were even born!"

"I mean I always wanted to be a part of a billionaire love story where billionaire meets girl, they fall in love and then they move in with the girl's best friend."

"I've never heard of the last portion of that story."

"I knew this day would come."

"What are you talking about?"

"You'll marry him alone, you won't move in with me and then you'll forget about me."

"The last part is so not true and the first two aren't true either. However, that man did ask me to marry him."

"How did he propose? Tell me everything! Don't spare even a single detail!"

"I got the job, took takeout, bumped into a motorcycle which crashed into an expensive car, thus breaking its door. Owner is asking for money, I don't have that kind of money on me. Aldrin Davis is the owner and has asked to me to fake marry him so that he can adopt a kid and with that, my debt will be forgiven."

"Wait, what? So, this isn't a love story and instead this is a crisis?"

"Yeah, pretty much."

"Don't tell me that you're actually considering this as an option!"

"No way!"

"What else did he say?"

"He threatened me to sell my house. That was fake, I know it."

"It better be! So, you're not at the McQuick-Pick?"

"No, and about that. Can you pick me up, please?"

"Where are you?"

"In front of the Davis Corporation building. It must be 10 minutes from your place."

"Actually, it's 30 minutes from my place, but I'll be there before you know it! O-bro is out!" She says as she ends the call.

I certainly feel a lot lighter knowing that I told Olivia about it, but I don't know what I'll tell mom.

Aldrin's POV:

"Aubrey, get me a coffee." I say.

"Yes, sir."

"I could have brought that for you, sir." Tanya says.

"You could have, but you're fired."

"What? Why?"

"Do I have to explain myself?"

"I'm sorry, sir."

"You know the place pretty well?"

"Yes."

"Then you can very well show yourself out!" I say in a stern tone as she walks out the door.

"Your coffee." Aubrey says as she places the cup of coffee over my desk.

"Aubrey, for long how long have you been an intern?"

"3 months, sir."

"You're now hired as my assistant. Your first task is to dig up more information about Sophia Perfect who was recently hired at McQuick-Pick Restaurant and hand them to me by 8:30 pm."

"I'll get started with that right away, sir. Anything else?"

"Nothing at the moment."

"Also, Mr. Hans is here to talk to you."

"Let him come in."

She walks out the door and there's the guy with curled black hair and green colored eyes which are most of the time high on weed.

"Aldrin, my man!" He says as soon as he walks in.

"Where have you been all day, Lucas?"

"I woke up at 3 pm and I ate till 5 pm. That's pretty much how spent my day."

"It's good that your dad manages your hefty lifestyle or you'd be on the road by now."

"What're you so tense about?"

"Nothing."

"I heard you that you fired Tanya. Your mother told you to give her a chance. She's her best friend's daughter."

"She had it coming."

"And may I ask how?"

"It's a long story."

"I have all the time in the world."

"But I don't because I have a company that unfortunately isn't going to run itself."

"Well, did you here from the Adoption Centre?"

"Yeah, they called earlier this morning."

"What did they say?"

"They think that I won't be an eligible parent."

"Why not?"

"Apparently, I can fulfill the wants and desires of the kid, but I would be needing a partner who would be taking care of child."

"Just hire a babysitter."

"Why not adopt the child and then admit it into a creche?"

"That sounds good too!"

"You know that your brain is so empty that I could build my own city in there?"

"Stop messing around."

"Alright."

"Why are you so determined to have a kid? Live your life, man. Kids make one so responsible that they miss being horrible."

"You don't need to know."

"You know you can tell me."

"Can we talk about something else?"

"Okay. Who's Sophia Perfect?" He asks as he changes the subject.

"What about her?"

"I heard you talking about her too. Maybe I can help."

"I'm thinking she can help with this."

"Don't tell me you're doing this with a stranger."

"I want to keep it like 'no strings attached'."

"What if she doesn't think the same way?"

"SHE'S NOT LIKE OTHERS."
