THE ONE

No time like Today

Luke’s POV

If I could, I would change everything of today, down to the part from opening my eyes to a phone call, no, actually I would start from yesterday,

if I would have known today is going to be this bad, I would have

drank one more glass, maybe that would have helped me face this irritating situation better.

Yes, I had been enjoying my life in Canada, if we have the same

definition of "enjoying", that is, to wake up and go off to

work,

come home, sleep and repeat. And yes, I do not actually need to eat at

home because there are already enough clients to accompany me for Breakfast,

Lunch and Dinner.

When you run as big of a company as I do, then, yes this is all the fun you require, need and want.

And yes, I chose this, I am me, because I like to be.

Well, that is not what I say when I come across the only

person, I could burn the world for, the one who means everything and the

only one who makes all the differences.

Susan Smith, the self-made woman, the woman who has

changed many lives, including mine.

The woman who is adored by millions

and the woman I love the most, the only woman I would ever love.

My heart almost stops as I spot her between a crowd of millions if not thousands,

it doesn’t surprise me that even after 3 years she is the only one I see. She

is the only one I have ever seen anyways, until…

 Sigh….

 Somethings never change…

I take in the clear view towards the exit gate only to be obstructed by

my co-worker as she congratulates me on the profit of our company.

Yes, our globally renowned

jewelry brand, Glamorous Pearl, has achieved an impressive 30%

profit increase, and has achieved 1st place in the list of the only 3 best jewelry brands

in the world.

Now, to celebrate the victory, I am stuck here.

‘Stuck’ as in, both mentally and physically, or I would say, was, cause

right now, I am using all my mental capacity to think of a way out of here.

I say a quick thank you to her and inspect the doorway for any more

potential interrupter, and when I find none, I am determined to exit this

swarming-with-people-place.

‘Luke…’

My breath hitches, as I hear my name with the same voice, the same

softness,

I could melt in it.

But I cannot.

I turn,

my lips curving into a practiced smile, and meet the gaze of the woman who could potentially rule over me.

‘Well, hello to you too…’ I say with a solemn face

She smiles politely

but her eyes…

Those eyes…

I take her in as she says,

'Congratulations on your big achievements’

 'Thank you,’ I murmur,

As I try hard to look away from her, but I am too captivated to do so.

She fidgets, as if sensing my gaze,

‘Bet you are happy on your dreams

coming true.’

My dreams….

I am dazed at the mention of it,

my mind takes me couple of years back. But I recover from

it quickly

 I give the shortest reply

possible, ‘Sure I am’

 She sighs this time, and

looks straight into my eyes

‘Luke, I am glad to see you today.’

‘I am too’ I reply and she nods,

‘Will I be seeing you tomorrow too?’ she enquires

And I know where this is going, and I shouldn’t let it happen, I

shouldn’t do this I wouldn't do it no matter what.

No time like Today 2

After almost a minute pause

‘Hey…’ I say with a solemn face

She smiles politely

but her eyes…

Those eyes…

I take her in as she says,

'Congratulations on your big achievements’

'Thank you,’ I murmur,

as I try hard to look away from her, but I am too captivated to do so.

She fidgets, as if sensing my gaze, and I turn my eyes towards the exit for a moment

'I am so happy for you, you have achieved such a great success, I could literally say, all your dreams have come true'’

My dreams….

I am dazed at the mention of it, my mind takes me couple of years back. But I recover from

it quickly.

I give the shortest reply

possible, ‘Sure I am’

She sighs this time, and looks straight into my eyes

‘Luke, I am glad to see you today.’

‘I am too’ I reply, and she nods,

‘Will I be seeing you tomorrow too?’ she enquires

And I know where this is going, and I shouldn’t let it happen, I

shouldn’t do this.

But all my pros and cons go straight to trash as she enquires again,

‘Will I, Luke?’

‘Sure, ofcourse…. Whenever you are free… uhm you know where to find me’

I regret saying that, but her eyes brighten with hope and my heart

relaxes at the sight.

What I have done is sinfully wrong, but what I feel is just right

in all the ways.

‘I thought I won’t be seeing you any time soon’ she says, hurt audible in her

voice.

‘No time like today’ I

reply

She nudges towards the

exit gate and says,

‘Seems you haven’t

changed at all. Still want to avoid crowded place, like old times?’

‘Old habits die hard’ I

smirk, then shrug, look at the exit gate, and tip my head towards the door and

say,

‘I will be off then’

she replies with a nod.

And soon, again, I am treading

towards the door eager to get out of this place.

And as soon as I am

out of the door I breathe in the fresh air and it feels like eternity since I

have actually breath.

When I lie on my bed

that night the only thought that consumes me, is of Susan, her eyes

was a museum of memories, each exhibit has carefully reminded me of the

delightful days, which was supposed to turn into faded memory.

She could let things go, but I could only wish to do the same.

I open my bed-side drawer to find the only material that feels like home, the

locket, which I have preserved for years, the only thing that has bought

comfort, support and at times hope to move forward.

I feel the metal on my rough fingers and soon I am taken back to the blissful

memories of my life. Blissful memories of 3 years ago.

If Times Were Different (Chp.2)

3 years back.

‘Luke, guess what?’, Susan chimes, as she walks past the door and into my room.

‘What?’ I ask with a blooming smile without looking away from the book I was reading because just the thought of her being around is beautiful, calming and relaxing.

‘I bought you a gift’ she says,

grabbing all of my attention.

Her complexion glowing as the warm sun rays falls on her bright skin, her chocolate brown eyes wide with anticipation, I walk towards her.

‘A gift? Whatsoever for?’ I enquire feeling intrigued as my eyes rest tenderly upon her.

She snakes her hands around my neck as she comes closer and answers

‘Honey, do you really think I need a reason?’

‘No, you don’t, love, but doesn’t it always go the other way around? I mean…. Me giving you gifts, rather than you giving me.’

‘Oh! it does, so what? It seems that you don’t need it, I will just return it, never mind.’ She says as she unwraps herself from me, which I don’t like at all, so I grab her hand and tug it towards me and soon she is against my chest again, and the box that is covered with a flowery paper on my hand.

With curiosity I walk towards my bed again to open the gift she has bought

‘Thank you, Love. Let me see what do we have here.’ I say, with excitement.

And again, the anticipation is back in her eyes and I am filled with joy, I don’t need any reason, just her, I have everything I need with her.

As I open the box, the thing inside the box mesmerizes me, it is a very beautiful locket, now when I say beautiful, you have to understand the deeper meaning of it.

My smile widens as I look at her,

‘This is gorgeous!!’ I exclaim

‘I know right, I had it custom made for you’ she says, and once again I am left amazed.

‘It is custom made?’ I enquire, as I absorb the wonderful locket and feel the details.

‘Yes’ she replies and my heart swells,

‘I am treasuring this for life’ I say, because I am going to treasure it for life not only because it is made specifically for me by her, but also because it shows all the love, care and faith of the world. I never thought I need a locket until now that I had it.

It is a golden heart locket that can open and close, with a beautifully engraved photo of Jesus inside. The delicate curves of the heart frame the image, and when you open it, you reveal 2 serene faces of us, one each side. It’s a precious keepsake, a reminder of faith, love, and devotion.

And If I say I love it, that would be an understatement.

So I just look at Susan and say,

'I love you, thank you'

'You liked it?' she asks
