chapter one
Mom
(gives Eve some money) here take this for the bus fare. I will not be able to drop you off, I have work at the hospital.
Eve
(frowns) I hate the bus.
Mom
Well, you have to bear with it.
Mom
(sad face) I wish your father was here, things could have been easier. Then I wouldn't have to work so hard and could have definitely dropped you off.
Eve
(sighs) It's okay mom, I didn't mean to make you feel bad.
Eve
I was just trying to be silly.
Mom
(chest her wristwatch) You must get going or else you'll be late.
Lily
(comes carrying Eve's bag) Your angel in disguise at your service.
Eve
(rolls her eyes.) you mean devil in disguise.
Lily
(fakes shock) Would a devil be lovely enough as to carry your bag for you.
Eve
(walks towards the bedroom door) I'll be off now, mom.
Mom
Call me once you're on campus. I just need to prepare dinner for Rodney before I go to the hospital.
Lily
(disappointed) don't tell me you forgot that I'll be going to school this evening right?
Eve
(scratches her head) Oh, I did not. It only slipped my mind.
Mom
Jane's father will drop her and Jane off at six.
Eve
(waves her hand off) fine, I should get going or else I'll miss supper.
Eve
Come Lily, you're seeing me off.
At the sitting room, Rodney is waiting for them, carrying a sketch of Eve.
Eve
Aww! Rod, this is beautiful. You're getting good these days.
Lily
(rolls her eyes) of course, that's all he does instead of playing with people his age.
Lily
Mom, if you don't push him to go out, he will end up alone.
Eve
(touches Rod's shoulder) He's only ten, don't define his life.

(smiles at Rod) Am sure he has friends at school, right?
Rodney
(nods) Spencer and James.
Lily
Those are his neighbors, he barely talks to them.
Eve
(glares at Lily) Just let him be, at least he has a passion.
Ever since their father died, in a car accident which Rodney happened to be in too, he had completely changed from a jolly child to a quiet one. he was only four then, but even though it had been six years since the accident, he still seemed affected by it.
Eve
(pecks Rodney) be a good boy and take care of mom. Okay?
Lily
Okay, get out now. You've said a lot of goodbyes we are tired already.
Eve
(waves) I'll call you.
chapter 2
Eve is in her hostel room with her best friend and roommate Britney talking about the holidays. Then Britney brings up Eve's break up with Clem, a topic that Eve does not want to delve into.
Eve
Come on, Bree. I told you am fine. it has been a month now and am so over him.
Britney
(studies Eve, suspiciously) I want so much to believe you......but I just can't.
Eve
(rolls her eyes) suit yourself then.
Eve
Clem is a past I want to forget and the only way to do that is if we don't talk about him.
Britney
(hands up) alright, miss. I will try not to bring him up.
Britney
But it's not a promise.
Eve
(groans) seriously Bree.
The door opens and Tony, the girls' friend enters with a wide smile on his face portraying his gregarious personality.
Eve
Learn how to knock, genius.
Tony
But you're not, so perfect timing. (winks)
Britney
Don't ever let Scar know that you call us your favorite girls, she will be pretty mad.
Tony
(waves it off) come on, Scar is my numero uno, but you come first.
Eve and Britney exchanges confused glances.
Eve
Is there any difference?
Tony
Yes, number is one is number one and first is first, its different trust me.
Britney
(facepalms) you're crazy. And I pity myself for being your friend.
Tony
Am still your favorite man, though.
Eve
There's Don. (points out)
Tony
But she spends more time with me than she does with him.
Tony
(smiles) who's her favorite then?
Britney
(rolls her eyes) you don't compare to Don. Shut up!
Tony
(seriously) I heard about Clem. How are you holding up?
Eve
(groans) can we just not talk about him. Am fine, people.
Tony
(smiles coyly) I don't
Tony
I hate his guts. In fact am glad he's out of your life.
Tony
We all know that guy is a loser, I don't understand why you dated that flat faced idiot. He's worse than Ms Bennett's paintings.
Eve
Don't ever say that in front of her.
Tony
(shrugs) whatever, he's not worth it though
Britney
And it's definitely not up to you.
Eve
Enough guys. I told you, no more talks about.....
Tony
(interrupts) the one whose name should not be mentioned.
Tony
(shrugs) am good with that.
Both Tony and Britney raise their hands up.
Eve
(smiles) Lets go then, am starving.
The three of them goes to have supper at the cafeteria. On their way, they meet Nicole and her two puppets. Eve knows her day just got worse. Nick has been harboring a grudge against Eve since their first semester. She hated Eve because Clement, chose her instead of Nick and now that it is over with Clement, Eve knows that Nick must be celebrating her chances of getting the king of Livingstonia University.
Nick
Would you look at that.
Ash
The two losers with the Ex Mrs Sasco?
Nick
I wonder how she's holding up, that break up must have torn. (laughs)
Debbie
It's a shame it did not happen on campus, I love dramas.
Britney is fuming inside, she tries to move forward, but Eve holds her back and shakes her head.
Eve
What do you want, Nick?
Nick
(shakes her head) nothing, am just glad he finally realized that you are not worth it.
Britney
(angrily) And you think you are?
Ash
Of course, do you need glasses to confirm that. (scoffs)
Eve
Well, am also glad you're so ready to pick up where I left. It seems like using residues is your thing.
Tony
Easy, try and smile more. You don't want to get more wrinkles.
Tony
Come on girls, let's go eat. Just seeing them is repulsive enough it might wreck my appetite.
Nick
(agitated) you good-for-nothings. No one wants to see you. Let's go girls.
Nick stomps off with her friends frowning. Britney pokes her tongue at them and rolls her eyes.
Britney
Always throwing a tantrum like a child.
Britney looks at Eve and notices the mood. It is obvious that the words from Nick and her friends has somehow upset her.
Britney
Hey, don't mind them. They like to pick on other's cos they are so miserable, and they just don't know how to handle it.
Eve
(sighs) I just didn't think that breaking up with him would be like this.
Eve
It hurts when others brings it up.
Tony
Relax, it will be over soon. (rubs Eve's shoulder) we are here for you. Okay?
Eve
(nods) Thanks guys, I don't know what I would without you.
Eve
(laughs) you and your silly jokes.
Tony
(smiles) They are enough to get you smiling.
Tony
And you should smile more, you look gorgeous when you smile.
Britney
Don't get all lovey dovey here, I will tell Scarlett
Britney
(rolls her eyes) Like I care.

Eve enters her chemistry class right before her teacher Ms Bennett appears behind her. She takes her seat beside Lorie, the only person she talks with in class. Lorie barely notices Eve, see fixes her glasses and turns the paper of her book.
Eve
(taps Lorie on the shoulder) Hey, Lorie.
Lorie
(raises her head) Oh! Eve, didn't see you there.
Eve
I was not expecting you to, especially with your eyes on the book all the time.
Lorie
Hey, am not even reading this thing.
Eve
That's what you say all the time.
Before Lorie can protest, Ms Bennett claps her hands and the whole class goes silent.
Ms Bennett
Welcome to the beginning of the new semester. Am surprised to see the class almost full today. I know you children loves to stay away on the first day of school......
Eve
(whispers) Why does she insist on calling us children?
Lorie
(shrugs) Don't know, maybe it's because she's too old.
Eve
She's in her middle thirties.
Lorie
(sheepishly)Isn't that old?
Ms Bennett
(clears her throat) Miss Alnords, do you have anything to share with us?
The whole class turns to look at Eve, their eyes says it all (busted) and she feels her stomach churn.
Eve
(Who gets in trouble on the very first day?)
Eve
(sighs and shakes her head) No ma'am.
Before she could finish her question, the door opens with a loud squeak and the class' attention is diverted to it. Two boys enters, their presence brings in a thick tension in the room and everyone avoids their gaze. Ms Bennett clearss her throat and stares at them, it clear she's not pleased with their entry, but she does not say anything. Luckily, she forgets about Eve and resumes with the lesson.
Eve is sitting on her usual table waiting for Britney and Tony to show up. As usual, the cafeteria is in motion. Eve looks around to see if she can spot Britney or Tony, but they are nowhere to be seen. As she's about to look away, she sees Clement sitting some tables away with a group of his friends. He has a girl sitting next to him and her hands are around his neck. She swallows and looks away.
Eve
(mumbling) Am over him, it doesn't hurt....am so over him.....
Britney
What are you mumbling about?
Eve
(yelps) Jeez! You startled me, Bree.
Britney
(eyes her suspiciously) You were the one mumbling to yourself like a crazy person.
Eve
(looks at Britney) By the way, why are you late?
Britney
(takes a seat and sighs) Mr Crowley got all excited, I think he missed us during the holidays.
Eve
(nods absently and looks towards Clem's table)
Britney
(notices) I thought you said you're over him.
Eve
I am. It's just hard to shake of this crazy feeling.
Eve
I wish it was so simple to forget you know
Britney
(touches Eve's hand) I think it's time you prioritize yourself first, focus on your happiness, do things that makes you happy and spend your time thinking about people that makes you happy. Okay?
Eve
(nods) Yes miss motivational speaker.
Britney
(laughs) You turn me into a person I never imagine being.
Eve
It's called love. (winks)
Britney
(slaps Eve's hand) Shut up! You will give people the wrong idea.
Eve
Let them think whatever. I love you and I know you love me.
Tony shows up and sits next to Eve.
Tony
If I hear you say that again, I will never sit here again.
Eve
And where else can you sit, sweet Tony.
Tony
(dreamy) somewhere so warm and comfy.
Britney
Don't make me guess.
Britney
But why are you here then
Tony
I missed you. You know I can't stay an hour without you, that would be hazardous.
Britney
(rolls her eyes and smiles)
Eve
You managed just fine during the holidays.
Tony
It was torture. (dramatically) I kept calling your names in my sleep. And when I woke up, I could not stop thinking about you.
Suddenly, the atmosphere of the room changes. The noise dies down, and some students even stops walking. Eve looks up and sees four boys walking towards a table. She knows who they are and so does everyone in the room.
Eve
Why are they here today?
Britney
Beats me, it's rare to see them eat here.
Tony
I don't think they are here to eat. (nods towards them)
The four boys are standing in front of a table. The table occupants are two nerdy boys a and a girl and there seem to be some kind of exchange towards them.
Britney
(angrily) those bullies.
Eve
Calm down, princess. You don't want to get in trouble
Britney
They don't scare me
Eve
(rolls her eyes) Yeah, right.
Eve looks at the boys again. She has to admit, they give her the chills. When she was dating Clement, she was afraid of no one because no one would mess with Clem's girl. Being a guy from a wealth family, he acted like he owned the school. Yet when it came to those four, he was always a step behind.
Eve
It's just best to be cautious
Eve
(mutters to herself) with some people we just need to know our place.
