Miyu stood in front of the mirror, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed out the wrinkles in her new school uniform. Today was her first day as a freshman at Seiran High School, and she was both excited and terrified. The unfamiliarity of a new town and a new school weighed heavily on her mind.
Everything will be fine, right? She tried to reassure herself, but her reflection didn’t seem convinced. Miyu had moved here just a week ago, leaving behind her old friends and the comforting familiarity of her hometown. She missed them dearly but was determined to make new friends here.
A knock on the door snapped her out of her thoughts. Her older sister, Ari, peeked in with a warm smile. "Ready for your big day, Miyu?"
Miyu turned to face her sister, trying to muster a confident smile. "I guess so. It's just... I'm really nervous."
Ari stepped into the room and gave Miyu a reassuring hug. "You'll do great. Just be yourself, and you'll make friends in no time. Besides, who could resist someone as sweet as you?"
Miyu laughed softly, feeling a bit more at ease. "Thanks, Nee-chan. I just hope I don't mess up."
"You won't," Ari said firmly. "And if you ever feel lost or overwhelmed, just remember that it's okay to ask for help. Everyone's been new at some point."
With one last hug, Ari sent Miyu off with a wave. Miyu grabbed her school bag and headed downstairs. The house was quiet as she tiptoed through the hallway, not wanting to wake her parents. She quickly grabbed a piece of toast and stepped out the door, the cool morning air doing little to calm her nerves.
What if no one likes me? What if I get lost? What if today is a complete disaster? Miyu's mind raced as she walked to school. Each step felt like a giant leap into the unknown. She clutched her bag tightly, her heart pounding in her chest.
As she approached the school gates, she took a deep breath and stepped inside. The courtyard was already buzzing with students, some chatting in groups, others rushing to class. Miyu felt like a small fish in a very large pond.
Okay, just breathe. You can do this. She glanced at her schedule and headed towards her homeroom. The corridors were filled with a mix of laughter and nervous chatter. Just as she was about to turn a corner, she collided with someone.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, looking up to see a boy with tousled black hair and a slightly annoyed expression.
"It's fine," he muttered, brushing past her. Miyu watched as he walked away, feeling a mix of embarrassment and curiosity. Who was that?
Homeroom was a blur of introductions and new faces. Miyu tried to remember everyone's names but found herself only recalling a few. Her mind kept drifting back to the boy she had bumped into. Why can't I stop thinking about him?
As the day went on, Miyu found herself slowly relaxing. She made small talk with a few classmates and even managed to find the library on her own. By lunchtime, she was feeling a bit more confident.
Sitting alone at a table, she opened her bento box, trying to appear engrossed in her food. Suddenly, a girl with bright eyes and a friendly smile sat down next to her.
"Hi! I'm Aiko. Do you mind if I sit here?" the girl asked.
Miyu's heart lifted. "Not at all. I'm Miyu."
"Nice to meet you, Miyu! I just moved here too. It's a bit overwhelming, isn't it?"
Miyu nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "Yeah, it is. But it's nice to meet someone else who's new."
As they chatted, Miyu felt her nerves gradually fading away. Maybe this new school won't be so bad after all.
By the end of the day, Miyu felt exhausted but hopeful. She had survived her first day and even made a new friend. As she walked home, she allowed herself to smile. This was just the beginning of her high school journey, and she was determined to make the most of it.
