Chapter 1: Such A Marriage 1

When Qin Zhiyou woke up from the large bed, it was raining outside, with the gale violently whipping the velvet curtains into a rustling noise.

A soft whimper came from beside him, seemingly startled by the sound of the wind and rain. Upon hearing it, Qin Zhiyou turned his head to look at the woman lying next to him.

Lu Weixi was not sleeping peacefully. Her red lips, tightly clamped by her teeth, bore faint tooth marks; her eyebrows, curved like distant mountains, were slightly wrinkled—she looked like a bundle of perfume lilies swaying in the storm.

Qin Zhiyou watched her for a while, then couldn’t help but reach out his hand, wanting to smooth the wrinkles in her brow.

Just as his slender fingers touched her face, Lu Weixi’s eyelashes began to tremble, as if she were about to wake up.

Instantly, Qin Zhiyou withdrew his hand, and picked up his pajamas lying beside him. With his back to her, he put on his clothes leisurely. Then he got up and slowly walked to the door, opened it, and called out, “Aunt Hao.”

Butler Aunt Hao came over, and he said calmly, “A cup of black coffee, bring it to the study.”

Aunt Hao nodded and was about to leave, but Qin Zhiyou took a few steps, his brow slightly wrinkled, as if he had just remembered something, and called her back, “Wait.”

His calm tone was devoid of any emotion, “I forgot to take precautions earlier because things were too hectic. When the young madam wakes up, remind her.”

Lu Weixi was lying on the bed, listening to his footsteps growing fainter. The cellphone on the bedside table was still vibrating continuously. She answered the call, and Dr. Zhao’s urgent voice came from inside, “Wei Hui, your mom is showing serious drug resistance again. If we don’t change the medication, we should arrange for surgery or chemotherapy as soon as possible, but I’m worried your mom’s body won’t be able to handle a surgery or the side effects of chemo. The new imported drug ZERO-1 is too expensive, so make a decision as soon as you can.”

After pondering for a while, Lu Weixi nodded, “I got it.”

After regaining a bit of strength in her soft body, Lu Weixi immediately got dressed, put on her robe and went out in her slippers. Aunt Hao was carrying a cup of coffee. She was startled to see her out of the room, “Young Madam.”

Lu Weixi didn’t say a word, but took the coffee cup from her hand and headed straight for the study.

In the study, Qin Zhiyou was typing on his computer keyboard. Lu Weixi knocked and entered, but he didn’t even look up at her.

Lu Weixi put the coffee down next to him. As soon as she put the cup down, he took a sip. Then he turned to look at the file folder on the desk, not even sparing her a glance or a greeting as she was about to speak.

Lu Weixi waited by his side until he finished the coffee, then she couldn’t help but speak, “Zhiyou.”

Without looking at her, Qin Zhiyou’s distinct fingers casually flipped through the files, occasionally comparing them to the computer screen, “What is it?”

“Including today, you’ve been home four days this week. That’s ten days this month.” Lu Weixi carefully constructed her words, starting a bit hard, then speaking faster as she proceeded, “We agreed when we got married five years ago: you come home five days a month, and give me fifty-thousand each month. If you stay longer, you have to pay extra.”

As Lu Weixi uttered her final word, Qin Zhiyou finally put down the document in his hand.

He slightly lifted his head, a penetrating glow reflecting from his slightly indifferent eyes.

A subtle chill pervaded the room, perhaps due to the cold of the rainy night. Lu Weixi felt a slight shiver, paused briefly, then continued her meticulous explanation, “Add a supplement of $50,000 each month. At other times, according to the rules, I will quietly be your wife – I won’t meddle in your affairs nor gossip about our relationship. In front of your grandfather, I will try my best to speak well of you, behaving as the perfect granddaughter-in-law. As for children…”

Before Lu Weixi finished speaking, she saw Qin Zhiyou’s fingers, resting on the desk, abruptly tighten, before slowly loosening and gently tapping on the table. After a long while, he lifted the corners of his lips in what seemed like a smile. But his facial expression appeared even colder.

“I absolutely won’t cause you trouble. So…”

Qin Zhiyou leaned sideways on his revolving chair. After she finished speaking, he raised his brows and his other hand propped up his chin, lazily and arrogantly watching her, “You mean, if I come home every day and spend every day with you, should I pay an additional $200,000 a month?”

Lu Weixi immediately shook her head: “I didn’t…”

Qin Zhiyou waved his hand, interrupting her speech. He squinted his eyes, scanning her from head to toe with a merchandise-inspecting glance, then slowly withdrew his gaze, chuckling dismissively, “No wonder Zhang Ailing said, marriage is long-term prostitution—”

Lu Weixi’s blood seemed to solidify. It was as if someone had slapped her face hard, the burning pain was intense. She suddenly stood up and hurried to the door.

She hadn’t reached the door when her arm was suddenly grabbed. Qin Zhiyou pulled her, causing her to lose balance. Stumbling backward, she ended up leaning against the desk.

His tall, sturdy body slowly approached, a cruel light flashing in his icy gaze. She suddenly sensed something, cold sweat appeared on her back, her legs felt weak, “Qin Zhiyou, you…”

“Don’t want your money anymore?” His mouth twisted into a smile, his voice like the black coffee he had just drunk — rich, husky, tainted with a twist of wicked darkness. He swept all the documents off the desk with one quick move. The scattered papers reflected her tumultuous emotions — surprise, a desire to dodge, and a hint of humiliation.

Qin Zhiyou advanced another step, thwarting her planned escape. Then he moved closer, his words as icy as his gaze, “It’s too much hassle this way. How about a monthly, yearly, or lifetime package?”

Lu Weixi was woken by a burst of sharp alarm.

With her eyes closed, she groped around the bedside table for a while and sleepily turned off the phone alarm.

The reminder for the day read: “A troublesome client coming to the company at 10 am.”

Lu Weixi, as a interior designer for Evergreen Design Institute, was head of a small team.

After a long while, she rolled out of bed. The man who had been there earlier was gone now, but on the bedside table remained a cup of water and a morning-after pill.

Throughout their five-year marriage, Qin Zhiyou was always careful and cautious. Whether taking precautions himself or having her take medicine afterward, he never left any chance for any mistake.

She smiled lightly and picked up the pill with two fingers, swallowing it without hesitation.

After washing up and changing her clothes, Mrs Hao greeted her courteously, “Young Madam.”

Lu Weixi only replied with a lackluster “Hmm”. Breakfast was already prepared on the table, but she was not in the mood, nor did she have time to eat.

In the past, Mrs Hao would prepare the dishes and it didn’t matter whether Lu Weixi ate them or when she ate them. Today, however, was different from the usual; she kept standing behind her until Lu Weixi finished changing her shoes, picked up her bag, and was about to head out. It seemed as though there was something she wanted to say.

Lu Weixi stopped in her tracks, “Mrs Hao, is there something on your mind?”

Mrs Hao fiddled with the corner of her attire then spoke with difficulty, “The young master mentioned that this month’s overnight fee, as well as yesterday’s additional money, has already been transferred into your card by his secretary.”

“Okay,” Lu Weixi replied casually.

“Also,” Mrs Hao hesitated again. When she started talking again her voice was as low as a mosquito’s buzz, “the young master also said that you need to take the contraceptive pill in front of me. He doesn’t want any unnecessary trouble.”

The phrase “in front of me” was emphasized.

The fingers holding Lu Weixi’s bag instantly tightened. With considerable force, the nails almost dug into the flesh. After a while, she relaxed her fingers and indicated agreement with a casual nod. In a calm voice, she said, “You may bring me the medicine.”

The medicine was brought swiftly by Mrs Hao. Lu Weixi took it and swallowed it in front of her, finishing it off by drinking all the water in the glass. She handed the empty glass back to Mrs Hao, took out a few tissues, wiped off the water at the corner of her lips, and threw the scrunched-up tissue into the trash bin. Looking at Mrs Hao in a detached way, she asked, “Is this okay?”

Mrs Hao nodded, casting a concerned look at her. After a long pause, she finally said, “Actually, Young Madam, the young master wasn’t like this. If it weren’t for…”

Without a word, Lu Weixi walked out of the house, the sound of her heels clicking against the floor trailing behind her.

When she arrived at the company, it was in turmoil.

A glamorous woman was sitting arrogantly on the sofa with her arms crossed and legs crossed. She was dressed in the latest Chanel suit, carrying a Hermes handbag, and sporting a pair of sunglasses. Beside her stood an assistant-like person. This woman was her client, Liu Yiyi, the recently popular hostess of Yan City TV Station.

Xiaochen had explained numerous times, but Liu Yiyi’s assistant was incessant: “Don’t think that just because Yiyi is lenient, you can take her lightly. We said earlier that these areas of the design needed changing. You guys agreed wholeheartedly, so why does the renovation look like this?”

Xiaochen tried to defend herself, “The design has been revised seven or eight times, and in the end, you guys agreed and signed the contract. We followed everything as per the contract without any negligence, and we didn’t overcharge a single penny.”

There were always a few difficult clients every month. Lu Weixi was used to it. She wouldn’t even bat an eye if Liu Yiyi’s assistant hadn’t said these words: “How dare you shirk your responsibilities? Do you know who Yiyi’s patron is? Qin Zhiyou, the president of Hanhai Company!”
